[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne Build Post, with links and Celebrity Endorsements

2020-03-25 Thread Nathan Mattia
Yeah, I actually thought these were going to be friction shifters (love it
on my Expedition tube-mounts) but not so! I’m disliking it right now
because of some phantom shifts on my last 2 rides. I’m trying to figure
out if it’s just new bike cable stretching or if my shifters suck, or if
it’s the derailleurs that are at fault.

Mine is a 58 cm Toyo. A couple of years later, I needed a headset & went

Can anyone post a link to the older, 2017 Geometry charts?? Want to see
geo for the MUSA AHH.

I tried the search in the RBW Owners Group, but could not find a link. The
RBW site seems to have only the current, 2019, chart.

Was your Sam a Caliper or Cantilever? Do you run fenders as well?

The Expedition is a 56 cm which makes it just a wee bit too big for me. I
think a 54 would be perfect for that frame.

[RBW] Re: Speed wobble

2020-03-25 Thread dougP
My experience has been that it's weight distribution problem. I had a Hobo
Baggins bag as a saddle bag, with the usual load'o'crap; tools, tubes,
lock, etc. I would occasionally get shimmy going downhill. Moving the
Hobo to the handlebars solved the problem.

I also experimented with weight in 4 panniers after encountering some
shimmy while touring. Using books as ballast, and my shimmy inducing
downhill as a control, I discovered that things were rock solid with 60% of
the weight on the front. Since then, If I'm only doing a 2 bag trip
(lodging or an overnight) I put the bags on the front.

[RBW] Re: FS: Clem Smith Jr Disc 59

2020-03-25 Thread Matthew P
Beautiful Chris.
I like the bars (Hunter-Nitto Smooth Moves?) and tires too.
Is that a 58 cm - 700c ? Or a 56 cm - 650b? And are the Thunderburts 2.1"
or 2.25" wide, or other?
Do you have more info on it posted anywhere else? Or please share here all
you'd like.
I'll have to check out Clockwork.

I have a 56 cm - 650b MUSA Atlantis with 2.35" Nobby Nic's and Magic Mary's
(front and back or the other way around).
And I have a 58 cm - 700c Toyo Atlantis arriving next week.
The 56 cm Atlantis is rideable but smaller than ideal, I think. Hence the
58 cm. One will be for (re-)sale soon.

I'm curious how wide a tire I can fit on the 58 cm - 700c Toyo. I'd like
to maybe get above 2.2" wide, but above that, I think I'd want the wheel to
be 650b.
That is the main driver for my interest in going to disc brakes - to change
wheel sizes, and less so to maybe not fatigue my hands braking all day wet,
loaded, offroad etc.
Something like 700c x 40-50mm smoothish tires for the road and 650b x
2.2-2.4" for trails would be nice.

Thanks all for the great info.

[RBW] Fwd: [650B] Blogging in the age of COVID - four part blog series on metal fender installation

2020-03-25 Thread Steve Palincsar
In view of the "Wavy Fender" discussion we had last week, I think this
post (cross-posted to the 650B and iBOB lists) might be of some interest
here.

 Forwarded Message
Subject: [650B] Blogging in the age of COVID - four part blog series on
metal fender installation

Date: Wed, 25 Mar 2020 12:11:38 -0700 (PDT)
From: somervillebikes
To: 650b <6...@googlegroups.com>

When I started Velo Lumino almost five years ago, I had a companion
blog, "Eléctricalités A.T. " but
I let it fall dormant after a few months. With all the extra time at
home lately, and also in parallel to a completely new Velo Lumino
website , I've decided to resurrect the
blog. I just finished a four-part blog series on installing metal
fenders, something I've been doing a lot more of lately as I am taking
on more custom lighting consignment jobs than ever before, many of which
include fender installation. I'm no constructeur and most builders could
probably run circles around my fender installing ability, but I thought
I'd put this together as I think it can help out most folks. I should
also note that much of what I describe in the blog I learned from Peter
Weigle's excellent article in an old BQ article from about 10 years ago.
But I think my series of posts expands on that article in terms of
detail. Regardless, much credit goes to others who have done this before
and already perfected the art.

Here are the links, or you can just follow them from within the blog's
main page, which is also linked from velolumino.com:

I ordered the steps according to what works for me; others may find a
different process works better for them:

Part I: getting a proper arc radius

Part II: stress-relieving before mounting

Part III: dimpling

Part IV: installing the stays

Enjoy.

[RBW] FS: Black Mountain Cycles Road Plus 59cm

2020-03-25 Thread ant ritchey

Posted this FS awhile back with a few other frames. Price is staying the
same but I'm throwing in some Nitto & Compass to maybe sweeten the deal.
Due to COVID-19-related concerns I'm out of work for at least a few months
and will soon need to pay the remainder on the Bantam Bicycle Works custom
(insert emoji gritting teeth // making nervous face here).

I bought this direct from Mike Varley in August of 2018. It's the biggest
one they make - 59cm, Aurora Red. It also happens to be the same size the
designer, himself, rides so it was very cool to be able to discuss the
build and concept over the phone with someone who knows this bicycle better
than any other, and to be able to get the set up right for the rider on the
top end of the height & fit. Steerer tube is uncut.

It's in excellent condition, definitely not even 1K miles on it. (Plenty of
mud & dirt on the bike in the photos but cosmetic condition of this bike is
near-pristine!) There will be way too much overlap with the Road Plus bike
and the coming custom; so whereas I love this bike and it's super fun - I
gotta move it along. All the info you need here on the BMC page:
https://blackmtncycles.com/frames/road-plus/

A FEW SNAPS OF THE CURRENT BUILD

Current build includes: TRP drillium levers, Dura Ace bar end shifters, XT
M737 derailleurs, Sugino Mighty compact double. Want a complete bike? Let's
talk. Just want the f/f/hs & wheel set, no problem. Price can be
arranged/negotiated for whatever it is that you're after. I'm flexible on
how this one should get parted out/sold but I'd like to follow the build
kit // "rolling chassis" format and include some extras; all of which was
purchased new for the build.

*BMC Road Plus rolling chassis & extras* - *$1,100 + shipping*
-Frame, fork, VP headset
-HED Tomcat 650b x 32h wheel set
-Compass Switchback Hill tires; gum wall // standard casing & in great shape
-Nitto Noodle handle bars, 48cm
-Robert Axle Project (front) & DT Swiss (rear) thru axles
-Hayes CX Expert calipers & mount adapters
-160mm 6 bolt brake rotors
-Promax 400mm seat post & clamp
-2 different 26.0 clamp stems and spacers
-tandem road brake cable for the rear caliper

Ok, so what's missing here? Shifters, brake levers, cables/housing, bottom
bracket, cranks, chain, cassette, saddle, pedals. I've got an
almost-complete, near-NOS 105 group I can throw in for $100.
Want fenders? I also have a a brand new set of silver SKS fenders for 650b
X 48mm for another $50.

More pics? Just holler! This post is getting long and kinda convoluted and
I'm sorry for that. Just wanna let ya know there's plenty of options. PM
me, text or call - 724 757 9258. Thanks for lookin'!
