This must be related to something James said about Rene Herse tires seeping
from the sidewalls when new. I guess as you pile on the miles the goop gets
coated inside the tire, and adding a little every few months builds it up more.

Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-18 Thread masmojo
Well, I think that maybe if I was lighter than 230 I might be able to run a
lower pressure, but I found if I go down more than 6 or 7 Lbs. the bike is
noticeably slower & tires start to roll uncomfortably @ 25lbs. (Tire
examples: in the 650B X 42-47 range)

I tried Stan's on my first attempt & I couldn't get it to seal, I've had
better success with the Orange Seal, it seems ever so slightly thicker, the
Stans seemed almost watery.

The longer the tire is mounted the better it seems to hold air; up to the
point that it gets old. Makes sense really.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Best minipumps for road tires *

2020-04-18 Thread Collin A
Patrick

I've got the analog silca pump that is shared across 3 bikes, and it works
super well with tires less than 40mm in my experience. One random
benefit/issue is that after about 6 months when I tried to inflate a tire
after getting pack on pavement, the whole thing unscrewed on me and fell
apart into about 6 pieces (easily fixed on the side of the road, though).
My guess is general use and being bumped around on my dirt tourer caused
the issue. The benefit is that it makes it easy to service!

Since that issue (about 7 months ago, now that I think about it), there
hasn't been a repeat dilemma...

Cheers,
Collin in Sac

a dusty light-red (also known as a dusty pink) would look very good with

If your powder coater can in fact get you the green you want (sage,
you said?), then obviously that's best. I've found it's very hard to
imagine a color on a bike from a paint chip. Something about the
narrow tubes as opposed to a monolithic wall of color. I've had two
bikes PC'd in a color other than black. For one of them (cream), I
liked it even more than I thought I would. For the other (sort of a
Bianchi Celeste / sage green that looked great on a paint chip), I
ended up displeased. Part of my displeasure was the glossiness, which
made it look a yellowish, lime-green in certain light. I ended up
taking steel wool to the powder coat finish to dull it, making the
finish matte; I liked it much better. That bike was done over 10 years
ago and the PC is still holding up well. If I were to do it all over
again, I'd get a shade of green with more gray in it.

Chauncey says he'll probably be able to get the sage green -- not
identical to but close enough to the original 2003 Joe Bell

Funny, I know that orange is a favorite on this list, but while I
like it better than yellow, I just for some reason don't care for
it on a bike frame.

2020-04-18 Thread aeroperf
My Sam came in Sage, and I like it. I get compliments, so others think it
is a good color as well.
But if I was doing a custom repaint I’d go for 1968 Camaro Rally Green.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968-chevrolet-camaro-32/
I used to paint my Nash Metropolitans this color.

It wouldn’t go well with red trim, but white or gold or black would
highlight it well.

[RBW] Re: Frame color!

2020-04-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all, some good suggestions and some good advice about thinking this
through -- which is my purpose in asking such questions, since I do know my
own tastes.

Actually, while I don't really like black or gray for frames, I have owned
several glossy black bikes that looked good; in fact, my first home-brew
paint job was hand sprayed (as in pump gun) gloss black oil-based enamel
with gold pin striping added by hand. Later I had a decent looking
battleship gray Stumpjumper Comp with orangy-red accents.

But black shows dust too much. I find white boring; I didn't care for the
yellow of the Motobecane; and I already have a darkish (Ford) blue -- need
a different color to tell the bikes apart. (Kidding.) I recall a very nice
metallic dark green on a 1991 Stumpjumper Team, but you can't get that with
powdercoat, I imagine. In fact, you can't do metallic with your usual $150
powdercoats, can you?

Chauncey says he'll probably be able to get the sage green -- not identical
to but close enough to the original 2003 Joe Bell Rivendell sage green; but
if he can't, I'll ask for a Herse-like blue.

Funny, I know that orange is a favorite on this list, but while I like it
better than yellow, I just for some reason don't care for it on a bike
frame.

Re: [RBW] Nuts and Bolts

2020-04-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm a wee bit more organized than you, since I have separate drawers for
bolts, nuts, washers, fender bits, rack bits, chain bits, axle bits,
shifter bits, brake bits, and so forth, but items of each category are just
stuffed in the same drawers, which is a small problem with the bolts, as
the drawer probably contains 5 lb of various sizes. Would love to have
something like an old library card catalogue chest with drawers that I
could make dividers for, and subdivide parts down to the nth-iest degree of
scrupulously obsessive separation.

I love my sage green Riv but the 2nd choice for me was the color Riv used to call their "standard" color. It was that metallic light blue/silver. I always thought that looked good. Not sure if that could be done with powder though.I really like the blue/grey color on bikes and it has been on a few autos lately. Like the Subaru color they call "cool gray khaki". That one looks really good in person and I think it would look great on a bike frame.I agree yellow is a bad choice for bikes. 2020-04-18 Thread Bones
Wow, lots of useful info, thanks everyone. I'm as confused as ever on which
way to go though :)

Now I'm wondering how the an xtracycle would work on my Appaloosa. The
chainstays are a little bit shorter and it's a double top tube so that
could only help with stability. To date that bike has been the heavy lifter
anyway. The only real appeal of the the leap kit is to save some money and
not add another bike to my collection. A BD of BFD would certainly be the
best way to go. One last option is a 10 year old Novara 29'er that's been
sleeping in my shed for a few years. It's in great shape, and I was
intending to offload that at some point, but maybe that would make a good
candidate for a conversion. Bottom line is the cargo bike will get lots of
use, and I want to love riding it as much as I have enjoyed riding my
Appaloosa.

[RBW] Re: Flying discs

2020-04-18 Thread velomann
The point of the Aerobie, pure and simple, is distance. It's why it was
invented and it's no contest with other flying discs. But for disc golf,
other team disc sports, or dog fetching you definitely need something with
more heft.

On the subject of discs and bikecamping, back in my rockclimbing days when
I spent a lot of Spring and fall weekends at Smith Rock, we'd warm up in
the parking lot with spirited Hacky-Sack circles. Seems like that would be
a good morning warmup and hip stretch before heading out on the bike. And
even easier to pack than a disc.

2020-04-18 Thread Robert Tilley
That wasn't my experience with the Xtracycle cargo bikes. I owned a Big Dummy for a number of years and then sold that in order to buy a Tern Cargo Node which used the Xtracycle Leap kit. Both of these rode very well even with heavy loads.I did use wideloaders or U-bars on my bikes and kept the heavier items as low as possible which may have helped. Now I'm using a Tern GSD but I do miss the longer Xtracycle cargo area. If I had room I'd have a Big Fat Dummy for sure.Robert TilleySan Diego, CA Sent from my BlackBerry - the most secure mobile device From: gbrugu...@gmail.comSent: April 17, 2020 9:17 AMTo: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comReply-to: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comSubject: [RBW] Re: Clem H + Xtracycle I haven't had experience with the Xtracycle Leap kit, but I did use the Free Radical kit quite extensively.  Once I gave a friend who weighs ~90 lbs a ride on the back and it was dangerous and scary.  All the twist and flex in the back sent the front end to and fro unpredictably.  Pedaling a straight line was practically impossible.   Although that was an extreme case, IME ~30 lbs loads were the limit, after which the bike would become too wobbly.  I've heard that the Leap is more rigid than the Free Radical, but I am skeptical that the improvements are such that they beat an actual cargo frame like the BD or BFD in terms of rigidity.  After that experience I got a BFD-- the 26" fat tire version.  The first thing I did was give a friend, ~150 lbs, a ride around the parking lot, and though there was some wobble it was manageable, and I could pedal a straight line.  I've attached a photo of ~60 lbs of cargo, which I pedaled trouble free around 2.5 miles home.  So my suggestions for increased safety would be a BFD or BD over the Xtracycle.  I don't have enough experience with bike trailers to offer any suggestions.

[RBW] Re: Frame color!

2020-04-18 Thread Steve Cole
Patrick,

One of the great attributes of Sage Green is its subtlety compared to purer
colors -- red, blue, yellow, etc. A color that has a similar quality that
you may have already considered is a light beige -- sort of the color of VW
Beetles of long ago. I loved Beetles of this color. I looked for a
Pantone color that might have a similar attraction. I really like Pantone
7628 C. I tried to copy a chip and upload it but Pantone doesn't make this
easy to do. Take a look.

[RBW] Re: Clem H + Xtracycle

2020-04-18 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I toyed with this idea a few months ago. Ended up finding an Xtracycle
conversion on Craigslist for $300 attached to an old generic MTB-ish thing,
very Clem like in geometry without the long chainstays so I'm just using
that for the kid taxing and cargo hauling.

Anyway, someone else on here (Hi, Ed!) who had built up a Clem-Xtracycle
DM'd the below to me. He had tons of experience with different cargo bikes
and his thoughts are below.

Short version: It worked brilliantly and he fully recommended it.

Long version (quoting from Ed here on out): "I "salvaged" a Leap kit off of
a Tern Cargo Node, so it's not quite the retail kit but close enough. I've
had a Dummy, a 1st gen Edgerunner, and Tern Cargo Node. I really liked the
Dummy (regret selling it to this day...) since it was a solid bike that
rode well with or without a load. The Edgerunner was a disappointment: a
bit too flexy in the wrong places, and pretty "dead" for a cromoly frame. I
could never get the fit of the Tern right with that weird Andros stem and
the ride was dead too, though as a cargo bike it was serviceable.

The Clem build up wasn't too dramatic. The long chain stays aren't a
problem. I wanted to run the "shorter" wheelbase slot on the leap but that
didn't work the way the dropouts are on the Clem. The rear dropouts do work
with the "long" wheelbase option on the Leap without interference, and I
didn't find the bike any more unwieldy than the other longtails I've owned.
Having a kickstand plate is an advantage and relieves stress on the top of
the chain stay tubes. You're already familiar with the "mullet" wheelset I
had built up: front rim hub, rear disc hub, using rim compatible Sun Rhyno
XL rims F/R. For brakes, I ran BB7 and stock pads with a 180mm rear disc -
with a load, 160mm may be too small - and Shimano V-brakes up front with
Kool Stop pads. As with any longtail build, I used a full run housing to
the rear derailleur and brake. Compressionless is best but super expensive
so I used the pro version of Jagwire housing as an affordable alternative. (
https://jagwire.com/products/housing)

The built up bike was brilliant. It had all the characteristics of the
Dummy in terms of handling with or without a load, but with a step
thru/lower standover frame and a more upright, and comfortable, riding
position. (I'd recommend the Clem L over the Cheviot for the lower
standover.) The mullet brakes are as weird as you'd expect - different
modulations - but easy to get used to and always plenty of stopping power.

Eventually, I did take it apart to sell the Cargo Node as a complete bike.
I would have opted to get the retail Leap kit and rebuilt the Clem L but I
am an old man with twins so opted for a cargo e-bike instead."

[RBW] Frame color!

2020-04-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Chauncey just texted me saying that the powder coater is out of the
near-match to the "sage green" that Joe Bell used for my 2003 custom --
frame later modified by Chauncey with the color in the photo below.

I've asked him to see if the coater can order more, but while I wait on
tenterhooks (is that metaphor appropriately applied? Weren't tenterhooks
used for processing wool?), I ask y'all: what color would you choose for a
new road frame to be built with color matched racks, silver VO fenders, and
silver components? -- oh, and I like red accents: bar tape and panniers.

Orange won't do b/c I like red, red won't do b/c I don't like red frames;
no black or white -- bleh! I have Ford Blue already -- beautiful! -- and
Forest Green. No turquoise or pink. Yellow, blech.

Should be a color that is readily available in touch up quantities.

Tell me what you think so that I can complain about your suggestion.

Patrick, take a look at the basic Silca mini pump. It has a hose come out
of the end, with a lever clamp for the valve, as comfortable as a Lezyne
without the fiddly threading. I have one but have only used it a few times
because these wider tire just don’t get flats very often, even with tubes.
