Re: [RBW] The joy of winter riding, and how do you keep your toes warm?

2021-02-12 Thread Corwin
Hi Bob -

Given that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I don't experience much in
the way of cold weather. Your mention of the Wim Hof method piqued my
interest though. I have been practicing the Wim Hof method for many years
now. I bathe in cold water. I'm a diver, so I wear much a thinner wetsuit
than others I dive with - and do not wear a hood. When I told Grant about
the Wim Hof method, he looked at me as though I was crazy. Most of the
time, I wear no gloves. Occasionally, I will wear a thin pair of silk or
polypropylene liners.

Namaste,

Corwin

Roberta,

That mermaid blue is so pretty! As I alluded to in my "chameleon" comment
the first couple pics I saw seemed green, then the last ones Leah posted
definitely show the blue. I'll bet it's going to keep color-shifting in the
sun like her Raspberry Metallic Platy does and will be *spectacular. *I

[RBW] Re: 11 speed with Silver DT shifters works great!

2021-02-12 Thread Benz Ouyang, Sunnyvale, CA
One should note that Shimano’s 11-speed *MTB* rear derailleurs require more
cable pull to shift over 11 speeds than Shimano’s own 11-speed *road* rear
derailleurs, like your Ultegra 6800. The difference is not trivial and
exceeds 20%. Thus, one needs to qualify one’s statement about whether
Silver DT shifters pull enough cable, because they may not for the MTB
Dyna-Sys rear derailleurs that some favor for the larger gear capacity and
chain wrap.

Andrew, your success makes me happy.
I did a 1x11 a few years ago, with a Silver downtube shifter. That feeling
of “wait, this is EASIER,” was unexpected. I agree that it’s probably

I only know Rory Gallagher from the Black 47 song “Rory.”

I don't think anybody here missed the intention of the title, especially

that is not the quote. The quote is "What I get asked is, is this bike

Crust! Which Is Better? The intention of the title is to get people to
watch the video. Which is what a good title is supposed to do. What puts it
kind of in the clickbait realm is, the video is not about one bike company
vs another bike company. Also, he does not answer even the specific
question of which of these two models is "better." So it's mildly deceptive
and it doesn't deliver the answer to the question it poses, the definition
of clickbait.

Certainly, most people who subscribe to the channel or know these bike
companies know that any title with versus in it is not going to deliver,
especially when the question is which is better. It's all kind of silly,
right? But we still like the idea that somebody is going to come down on
one side or the other, just so we can totally agree. Or totally disagree.
It fulfills the same role as gossip. And It doesn't matter. Just like this
thread doesn't matter. It's cheap, harmless fun during a cold & snowy

any declarations, it does seem as though he goes for the Hillborne more
these days. So I'm going with Rivendell FTW by decision. And after watching
the thing, I confirmed my initial opinion that I wasn't interested. But
since I didn't fall for the initial clickbait, I'm really not the target

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB few parts for my Atlantis

2021-02-12 Thread Hugh Smitham
Bill asked if I had an Atlantis that bridged between the old MUSA/Japan
version and the MIT version?

Bill knows his RIV's I'll give him that. It's an MIT modern version, no
downtube bosses and it's a 53cm so 650b.

For what's it's worth I appreciate the stem shifter recommendation.

[RBW] Re: WTB few parts for my Atlantis

2021-02-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
Hugh asked for a 26.8mm seatpost, 650B tires, and downtube shifters for his
Atlantis.

Are you sure your Atlantis frame will take downtube shifters? Old MUSA and
Japan Atlantis' had downtube shifter bosses, but those frames were 700C or
26". The newer MIT Atlantis take 650B in the medium sizes, and take a
26.8mm seat post, but those frames don't have downtube shifter bosses.
Those newer MIT Atlantis' just have housing stops.

Is your Atlantis some bridge between the two versions?

I run stem shifters on my MIT Atlantis and my Hillborne highly recommend
them, for what it's worth.

2021-02-12 Thread Berkeleyan
Dave, it's better than the old site, thanks!

My initial suggestions are to (1) have the masthead "stick" to the top of
the browser window, so I always have access to the triple-bar widget, and
the human head, magnifying glass, and shopping cart icons. (please consider
activating the script that will let their proper functions appear as a
strip of text when the mouse is hovered over them), and (2) work to let
each page have some reference anchor back to the page or category it came
from. For instance the "Saddle Sores" page is a helpful article amidst the
collection of cycling tips, but I don't know that it's one of several
articles in a group on cycling tips when I'm there looking at it.

And bravo on the order history in the view of my account! Wow, I have spent
a lot at RBW over the years :-)

[RBW] Re: New look for rivbike.com and new News blog

2021-02-12 Thread Chris L
The product pages, with some large photos and many small photos is very
unfriendly and if you want to change categories, you have to scroll all the
way back to the top to find the three little lines (which are almost
invisible in those huge b images at the top) and click it again. Maybe
once in the products sections, keep the navigating tree visible? If
possible. And make all of the product links the larger size.

[RBW] Re: Sorta-OT: Indoor trainers

2021-02-12 Thread Ryan M.
I've ridden quite a bit on trainers and have a direct drive Wahoo Kickr,
before that a wheel on fluid trainer and before that a wheel on mag
trainer. The Kickr is totally worth the extra cost, IMHO, especially if you
plan to use a subscription plan like Zwift. The ability to use erg mode,
which is the mode where the app controls the resistance, makes the whole
experience more pleasant. I find it also easier to set up the direct drive
units compared to the wheel on (plus you don't wear out your tire).

I use Trainerroad for interval stuff but have used thesufferfest and Zwift
too. I liked Zwift more than Thesufferfest just because sometimes you just
want to get the legs moving and not destroy your will to live, and
sufferfest is aptly named. Although, Sufferfest has these workouts with
this guy Mike Cotty where they are more for base training. Mike rides
through extremely nice looking areas and talks about the route some, which
I thought was well done. You can also check out the Col Collective on
Youtube which is by Mike. Watching that on youtube while riding the trainer
has been useful as a distraction. Really well shot and edited stuff...but
I'm digressing.

Trainerroad has a ton of different workouts and workout plans for the
cyclist, but it will not give you anything to watch. I do like throwing on
some movie I've seen a hundred times and using that as distraction while
using the app. Trainerroad is great if you really want to plan your
workouts, it has a great calendar feature, and it will get you faster on
the bike, but it becomes more of a chore and you have to supply the mental
distraction to riding inside. Zwift, on the other hand, can be just a fun
game where you ride around different virtual areas and try to upgrade your
bike.

Your question reminds me that I need to get off the couch and start using
that trainer more during this ridiculously cold pandemic winter.

 A few thoughts follow.

 *Homepage photographs*
I really dig the wild, free, low-light, long exposure photographs here.
And I generally really dig and admire the idea that a place that sells
incredible bikes has a front page where you can't even really see the
 frames.

 *Product pages*
I'm glad that you can finally see things in bigger and better
resolution. A lot of these pictures are way way way crispier than on the
old site. The mouse-over function on the old version never worked for me.
 I
find that the huge, long column of text is a bit tricky to parse and
difficult to read. Would it be possible to have a gallery of product
pictures towards the top with the text below, with the text running the
 full width of the page?

 *Category pages*
I would find it easier to browse if all of the products were displayed
in a grid with each shown at the same size. Easier to scan, allows the eye
 to follow a straight line.

 *Restock email alerts*
 Gotta have these alerts

 *Newly updated/added*
Would it be possible to have a page where newly added and updated and
restocked items could appear together? Crust does this and I appreciate
 it.
I've noticed another Crust comparison above, they did a nice job. But
 their
site is almost entirely a store, without the blog, news feed and tons of
articles and information to incorporate. I appreciate Will's re-stock
 updates!

 *Staff bikes*
I have always dug this page and wish it was more actively updated!
 Looking forward to the return.

 *Article page*
This could be organized a bit better, perhaps with headings for
categories with individual articles bulleted below. Having to click into
each sub-category page is a little cumbersome.

 *Sizing and geo page*
The chart is large! I can zoom in using the zoom function in my browser
or right click to view at full size but on my MacBook the chart displays
 at
a size that is small and pixelated and unreadable without user-end
 manipulation.

[RBW] Sorta-OT: Indoor trainers

2021-02-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Hi Rivsters,

I've been looking into this for weeks and am quite amazed at how little
progress I've made in coming to a decision. All the reviews on this stuff
are from 25yo 135 lbs. "roadies" who ride carbon wunderbikes outside and I
can't imagine their impressions are going to mean a hill of beans to me. So
maybe folks who ride the kind of bikes I ride can help.

The situation: My riding outside time is limited right now and looks to be
remaining that way for a good 6 more months, and I'm becoming hopelessly
out of shape and can't wait anymore..I need to ride! I thought about
Peloton-type bikes but I think I'd rather hook my lovely Riv Custom up to a
smart trainer and actually ride the bike I own. I'm leaning towards
direct-drive like Wahoo Kickr or Tacx Neo 2T instead of the kind that keeps
the rear wheel on. It's more money but my goal is a thing I'll use and like
more than counting pennies. I'll be using apps like Zwift for mimicking
road rides and maybe the Peloton app for classes with instructors.

Does anyone here have any experience with these contraptions?

Thanks,
Joe Bernard

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?

2021-02-12 Thread Den John
Well one of the interesting questions that follows from the Riv/Crust
approach is whether anyone else is doing the same thing. If not, why?

The only example I know of for certain is Stooge Cycles in the UK, which
has an approach based on limited runs of production
bikes made in a major Taiwanese factory. Each run of bikes has its own
identity, but within a general concept of progressive
geometry, non-suspension steel bikes with a nod to early MTB history. It
seems to be working well: each run sells out pretty quickly.
Stooge also gets its identity from the fact it's basically run by one
person, who puts a lot of his personal interests into it.
Oh, and the band/music link is already done for you with Stooge :-)

Black Mountain Cycles is another example I suppose.

I didn't intend to imply that any of this stuff is contrived. I think with
these smaller brands, the identity emerges as they go on and try different
ideas. So it's interesting to follow them.

If anyone can think of a bike brand that would match with Jello Biafra, I'd
be interested to hear about it.

links, or perhaps if the three bars stayed pegged to the top of the page
she might have noticed them, but as it is she did not -- it takes some
savvy and of persistence -- not sure that's the goal. It's more minimal on
the landing page, but less obvious and less user friendly IMHO. It is, on
the other hand, appears to be trying to be trendy and "hip" -- which,

Looking good. Regarding the sub categories, which indeed can be
helpful, if you open the "3-bar" menu, you get the drop down major
categories--Parts, Gear, Garage Sale, etc. By clicking the "+" sign next
 to
a main category, you get subcategories--eg, under Parts, you get Bottom
Brackets, Brakes, Cassettes, Etc. If you click on brakes, you get the
 whole
shebang, blended together--calipers, levers, pads, cables--all
 intermingled
with willy and nilly. BUT, if you click directly on the word "Parts"
instead of the "+", you get taken to the Catalog, which breaks down brakes
into: Brake types, brake hardware, etc. (The catalog also appears to the
right of the drop down main, but is cut off, at least on my laptop.) Would
there be a way for that click on Parts to bring you to exclusively that
"catalog style" menu JUST for parts?

Two sections that could use a further "+" or submenu IMO would be
 brakes and handlebars.

It's not an easy task to develop a logical taxonomy for web site
navigation. Multiple pathways and redundancies are good, but can sometimes
be confusing when different pathways use different nomenclature, or when
it's not clear where exactly you are. The ultimate is to have a visitor
who finds what they are seeking in two or three easy no-brainer clicks.

I imagine some further refinement and tweaking could be a benefit.
 Meanwhile, totally useable as is.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?

2021-02-12 Thread Mark Roland
I don't think anyone is disputing the notion that Rivendell and Crust are
niche brands that have created a feeling, or lifestyle or culture around
their brand. Those words sound not quite right and maybe a bit too
premeditated. In the case of these two companies, the marketing angle is
really an outgrowth of who they are and what they believe in and share with
their customers. Anyway not breaking news. I'm going Mark Knopfler/Grant
Petersen. True, Knopfler races cars. But he also started the Notting
Hillbillies, which is kinda like Hillibikes, going back to roots. And he's
good, and went against the heavy rock/punk scene in the late 70s, forging
his own way.

2021-02-12 Thread Mark Roland

Looking good. Regarding the sub categories, which indeed can be helpful,
if you open the "3-bar" menu, you get the drop down major
categories--Parts, Gear, Garage Sale, etc. By clicking the "+" sign next to
a main category, you get subcategories--eg, under Parts, you get Bottom
Brackets, Brakes, Cassettes, Etc. If you click on brakes, you get the whole
shebang, blended together--calipers, levers, pads, cables--all intermingled
with willy and nilly.

Two sections that could use a further "+" or submenu IMO would be brakes
and handlebars.

Love it! I think the home page for a lot of sites is underutilized, and
giving it a sorta brick and mortar shop vibe is a clever approach since
you're always first greeted with what's new...not sure what the confusion
is since the navigation is pretty much identical. I also dig the oversized
bounding boxes for sale items, I don't think I've ever seen that but it's a
nice tone on tone, and a smart work-around versus having to take all new
photographs of items on same/complementing backgrounds kinda like what
Crust did with the color backdrops.

Thumbs up,
Andrew

Adam, those are Big Ben Plus tires. Something with more tread would
probably be better in the snow but I end up riding a lot of pavement here.
They're a good compromise and very long lasting. I ride outside year round.
If you have the right gear and attitude it's doable. I am getting a little
tired of all the single digit mornings lately. We had a pretty mild winter
up until the end of January. Hit me up if you're out here next winter and
we can do some winter cruising.

2021-02-12 Thread Dave
Thoughtful input! We considered changing around the navigation to a more
stark "Shop" & "Learn" format, but left the navigation exactly as it was on
the previous site. The reason was that there would be no learning curve for
customers accustomed to the old way... for now. Finding stuff should be
familiar, but yes, we are working on improving that.

Stay tuned for more changes. We're on the same wavelength. I'll take your
two cents thanks!

I've noticed some other sites switching to this theme for their
site/webstore. I find it hard to navigate to find things.
My main complaint is it tends to merge the website and the webstore into a
seamless amalgamation of "site" and I can't tell whether I'm going to be
reading an article/page or looking at a product.
I prefer separate more defined experiences. But that's just how I use
websites and shop.Ever walk into a store and think, is this a store or
someone's house? That's the kinda vibe this style of theme gives me.
That being said, I'll still use it if I have to.

we have SO MUCH text on our product descriptions and articles that it
throws the standard search for a loop. We're working on it. Stay tuned.

[RBW] Re: New look for rivbike.com and new News blog

2021-02-12 Thread Garth
My first desktop impression in navigating it is "awkward". Some large
images, some small. 2 columns only, lots of empty white space. On product
pages the product detail font is oddly small/compressed/faint in relation
to the title font and large images. I find it an awkward .

I prefer seeing more items on one page, utilizing the available space with
content, not plain white background. I can see plain white background
anywhere.

The 3 bar thing for desktop websites is to me not a good look or function.
It seems as web design and function professes to progress/improve/evolve,
it does the very opposite. It's like jumping out the bedroom window and
walking around the block to get to the kitchen.

"Just the facts" ... so to speak.

[RBW] Re: Experiences with Riv/Soma Clipper Crankset?

2021-02-12 Thread Garth
Brett, Did you try Vuelta themselves ? Between their silver/black , SE/SE
Plus 94mm rings that should cover any size you need.

https://www.vueltausa.com/components/chainrings-flat/se-chain-ring-94mm-30-48t.html

https://www.vueltausa.com/components/chainrings/vuelta-se-plus-chainrings-94mm-bcd-black.html

They're sold on ebay too, and not for anywhere near 80 bucks.

Yeah, the clipper is just an XD crank, nothing special. You want "trying" ?
You'll utter "why the expletive did they design it like that ?" after
changing rings a few times and you'll yearn for a regular forward facing
bolt design. Considering what awaits with an XD, and that your 94mm crank
is already on the bike with Vuelta chainrings available, some rings be the
"path of least resistance", so to speak.
