Re: [RBW] Silver2 shifter apparently shift 12 speeds fine, even with SRAM rd

2022-07-19 Thread brizbarn
Anyone trying to do a parts bin friction 1x system, you could try using an
old left hand front shifter as the rear shifter. Mine was a front bar end
friction shifter, now on a Paul Thumbie. I run it on the right underside
of grip and it shifts my 1x10 micro shift derailer through a 11-50 tooth
cassette great. I use 10 speed chain. Probably could have used an old deore
9sp rear derailer and gotten away with not buying a new one.

So long as the limit screws on the rear derailleur are set correctly,
and the lever has sufficient travel to sweep the entire distance between
the high stop and the low stop when connected to the cable, there's no
 reason it wouldn't work.

I suppose you could also talk about cable pull ratios and maybe there's
a situation under which a friction shift lever didn't have enough travel
because of multiplication or division of travel, but it still goes back to
the same question, is there enough travel when the thing is connected to a
cable, so more or less a yes or no question.

[RBW] SimpleOne upgrade

Hey All! I haven't posted much for content here so I thought I'd share
some before and after shots of my SimpleOne. I am the third owner and it

Rivendell bikes deserve, but I desired to give it a classy upgrade and
start my own love marks on the gravel roads here in Nebraska and tours
around the midwest. I'm really pleased with how she turned out and I am
already enjoying the new scuffs and bumps in the new adventures.

[RBW] 52 Clem frame sor sale

2022-07-19 Thread 'Keith Swanson' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm going to sell my 52 Clem L frame in a couple of weeks so I thought I
would offer it here first. It's the dark bronze green color and in like
new condition. It might have 80 miles on it. Riv talked me into sizing up
when I bought it and it's never felt quite right, so I'm replacing it with
a Rosco Plat. I live in Seattle and would much prefer to sell it locally.
 Asking $850.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot for trade/sale

2022-07-19 Thread alan lavine
Sorry to say that no trades are in sight and several have expressed
interest in a sale.I tried to research a reasonable price but data are hard
to come by since very few of these end up on the market. I'm gonna ask
$2150 net to me. Buyer pays shipping, even if it requires 2 boxes because
of size. I'll do the tedious packing for free. Local pick up earns a $100
discount. The Brooks saddle stays with me, it's attached to my butt.
Here are the details, LMK if I've forgotten something.

Soma Oxford handlebars, albatross equivalent
Nitto Technomic stem
Vintage no name mt. bike brake levers
Suntour bar con shifters, black lever covers labeled Raleigh
Sackville HB bag
Tektro 559 brakes with kool-stop inserts
Shimano Deore hubs laced to Mavic 519 rims
Soma Supple Vitesse SL 700 x 48 tires with minimal use
Love Mud flat pedals
VO double crank 46/30
uno seatpost
Claris front der. Acera rear der.
7 speed Shimano HG cassette 34 T max.
Greenfield kickstand
KMC chain
Carradice Barley bag with Bagman support
Last, but by no means least, Sackville hub shiners!!

Not the way I thought it would go, but let's go with it. Hope this all
sounds reasonable to you.
Best,
Alan

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day (last week) A New to me Quickbeam

2022-07-19 Thread Will M
Bill, I love the design constraints (one-day build, single-speed touring,
AND low cost). About 4 years ago, motivated by my Quickbeam's setup of
"One Speed, One Cog, One God" (exactly, Patrick :) -- but needing
significantly more luggage capacity than a Quickbeam for living car-free --
I did a VO Campeur single-speed conversion via a Surly Ultra New
Singlespeed MTB Rear Hub and a Paul chain tensioner. The Riv/Nitto Big
Back Rack, naturally. Porteur front rack. Albatross bars. As you can
see...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/28828007907/in/album-72157668716780897/

Darn thing ended up being $1200 more than my Quickbeam, and it took me
weeks to build it, so I failed 2 of 3 of your constraints. But I love the
simplicity of singlespeed touring. :)

Cheers,
Will

 A while back I posted a WTB for a 58cm Quickbeam. I finally found a
frameset/wheelset on a trade. It had all been ridden pretty hard as a
commuter, and that pre-installed beausage kind of liberated me from some
 of
the usual perfectionist tendencies that I have with my builds.

A thread over on iBob showed off a ~$3000 Pro's Closet listing of a
Vanilla branded "single speed tourer", and one of the responders suggested
that we should have a build-off: build the nicest single speed tourer you
can for the minimum amount of money.

In response to that challenge I threw together a one-day build using
entirely stuff laying around in my parts collection. Particularly
iconoclastic details include a gold anodized Nitto Pearl 11 stem, a
 heavily
modified brakeset, and handlebar tape entirely fashioned from remnants.
Anyway, if you want to have a look, I've got a flickr album:

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/albums/72177720300383026

It's actually a 6-speed single speed. In the album, there are 35/38
chainrings, a 20/22 Dos/ENO freewheel on one side and a 17T fixed cog on
the other. I did some calculations targeted at utilizing the generously
long Quickbeam dropouts, and decided I can get away with 40/34 chainrings,
which I also had on-hand on the chainring board. I have a 16/18 freewheel
on the way, and then I'll convert it to an 8-speed singlespeed, with gears
ranging from 43 to 69 inches.

There's another order in the works to make this 'Beam even weirder, but
that project is a few weeks out. We'll see if this build concept makes
 its
 way onto a Roaduno.

What a beautiful Atlantis! At just over 6’4” I can appreciate these bikes
and hope to someday own a larger Atlantis. Great work and I bet it rides

I've been a reader for a little while, but never a poster, so this post

Could this work in time for my end of summer tour in the Rockies to be

[RBW] Re: 56+ before 55!

2022-07-19 Thread RichS
Hello Drew,

Thank you for telling your story. It's inspiring to read about your
positive attitude and resolve in overcoming your medical issues. Best
wishes for good health and many years of good rides on your beautiful red
Rivendell.

Something else in your post jumped out at me and that is the locale for
your rides is the same area where Jobst Brandt and his pals regularly rode.
Really nice that you have access to those routes. I just read Ray Hosler's
book "Once Upon a Ride", an account of the "Jobst rides" rides from 1980 -
2007. It's a fun read with lots of photographs and names you'll recognize
(Tom Ritchey and Peter Johnson are two). Hosler still lives in the Bay area
and continues to ride those roads. Check out his blog at
rayhosler.wordpress.com

Stay well and keep the wheels turning!

Best,
Rich in ATL

Re: [RBW] Re: Long reach brake options for AHH

2022-07-19 Thread Brett Callahan
PSA: Looks like those longer reach dia compe are in stock at Soma Fab.

 They're
not cheap.

My experience with 559 vs. Paul centerpulls on a caliper brake Hillborne
model was that the CP's stopped a little better than 559's in the dry, and
'felt' better, probably because less flex. However, braking in the dry from
both was satisfactory with Kool Stop pads. In the wet, (actively raining,
hard) neither brake stopped worth a damn.
Caveats: I'm a big guy at 250+ and really well set up cantis don't stop me
in the wet all that well either. For wet weather braking, a bike with
discs or to a lesser extent V-brakes are the way to go, I think.

I'm looking at getting a set of these wheels in 700c for my Sam Hillborne,
but they're 130mm spacing without the ability to add spacers and re-dish
the wheel. The Hillborne's spacing is 135mm.

I've put 130mm wheels in the Hillborne before and just tightened down the
QR, but only for a short period of time. Any downsides to this as a long
term solution with this wheelset? I use friction shifting, so I don't have
to worry much about slight derailleur alignment issues.

I’ve been using the 700c version of these for a few months on several
different bikes. The rear did go out of true not too long after I got
 them.
I was as kind of surprised, but trued them up and no problems since. I
liked the price point too with the front hub. I was able to set them up
 tubeless with no problems either.

I have a pair of the 700c complete wheelsets and I probably put
them through more rough stuff than they were intended to be on.

I've ridden them for about 500-600 miles, about 40% gravel (nothing
super rough) and 60% road in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills. I ride my
 bikes
kind of hard, with a lot of out of the saddle, high torque efforts.
 I'm
never riding any trails that I'd be more comfortable on a front
 suspension
bike on. The wheels were machine built, so they went out of true
 rather
quickly which was expected. At ~200 miles, I gave them a little touch
 true
to keep them laterally true. But shortly after (~70 miles later), they
 went
out of true again, and I attributed this to my lack of experience
 truing
wheels, it being machine-built wheel, how light the rim is, and/or how
 hard
 i'm pushing them.

An acquaintance mentioned that he had to true his wheelset about 5
times before they stayed true. I'm not super well equipped to true
 wheels
appropriately, so this would have gotten expensive for me to get a
 shop to
do this regularly, so I just got them detensioned/retensioned by a
 trusted
wheel builder. The wheel builder mentioned that the rear hub is a bit
crunchy already and he suggested I replace the bearings and clean out
 the
internals to get 'em smooth again. I wasn't thrilled to hear that, but
 it's
 all good.

Anyways, the wheels are light and really responsive, I like how
quickly they spin up, and they're priced really well. But since I'm
 not a
wheelbuilder-type, I think this is the last machine-built wheelset I
 ever
buy. The wheels were pretty, light, and cheap-ish. But as

If the brake bridge is not compatible, then just attach one of these
between the rack mounts, or to a seat post rack mount (available in many
sizes) clamp.

No trade offers yet. Anyone interested in a sale? I'll work up a spec
sheet and price.
Local pick up a big bonus!

Thanks,
