(cross post from iBob)
I'm in need of a 650b rim brake, quick release wheelset in silver for a new
build. In solid consideration is the Crust 650b wheelset for $575. I don't
need a dynamo hub, but I'm not opposed to it (it'll just necessitate buying
a light as well) 48mm tires will likely live
Ryan, I went through this 10 years ago. Car accident while working in 2010
(rear ended by teen in a Jeep doing over 50 while I was at a standstill in
order to make a left turn), second very aggressive back surgery in 2012, so
yes, I am going slow. Right now I just want the draining to stop,
With the Shimano's I find I often shift with the lever between my pinkie
and ring finger. Almost effortless and one of those things one does
without thinking.

Nothing wrong with walking...and it's good you're being careful. After my
2016 run-in with a car, a few days later, I thought I could do a little 2
kilometer walk , and man, did I pay for that. Bad enough I couldn't ride
for the rest of the fall, which is my favorite riding time...but I also
I can't comment on the Shimano comparison but I've used Silver1 and 2 as
bar-ends and liked that long blade better. The way you can drop your whole
hand and pull up on the ratcheting direction with your two rear fingers
(pinkie and the other one) can't be beat for friction shifting.

Adding to Ben's comments. I've been running Shimano Dura-Ace 9-speed bar
ends on my bikes for awhile, in friction mode. Recently wanted to see
what, if any, difference Silver2 shifter would be. So last week I
purchased one Silver2 lever for the rear to try on one bike. Yes, had to
use my
Thanks Ryan. I am hoping to be able to walk more than 2 blocks soon, as
this was a relatively easy procedure. Walking looks great right now.

I see there are plenty of older folks on this list me included.
I'm in the early 70's group also.
Upright bars are on all my bikes now.I've occasionally mounted drop bars with a
taller stem but then switched back to upright bars.
I just no longer like riding in the drops so no need for drop
Brilliant, just saw that same set-up on Bags X Bird's site. Thank you much.

Thinking about changing lights to see the difference? Worth it? Any
different? Also concerned about the connections. I have the Kasai hub
w/the plug and not sure how to connect the SON light. Will keep the same
tail light (B Brakelight plus) which I love. Thoughts?

Great ride report. Leaving for the Cycle NC Mountains to Coast ride, which
has been cut down to 5 days from 7, on Sun. I wasn't looking forward to
the climbs. Maybe it's working out for the best. I'm in Charlotte and
would be up for a ride anytime. Where are you? I'm on Warm Showers if

Well, I do hope your recovery goes well and you can get back on the bike. I
try not to obsess about this, but who knows how many miles are left on the
odometer, right? And since I walk rather than ride in the winter...I
figure...carpe diem

Exactly. My speed is now just slow and I don’t care, my distance is shortened.
I think this season is over for me so I will see what next year brings. I tuned

Thanks for posting. The following year, 1983 spent 5 months touring in Europe,
starting in UK and ending in Crete. To this day, wish I kept going and traveled
around the world. Oh well, still a life changing trip.

This is indeed interesting. Are 14 yos still doing stuff like this much? A
rite of passage...

Was it Bette Davis who said "getting old ain't for the faint of heart" ?
I, too, will hit my three-score and ten in December and I know my bike
accident in 2016 where a car turning right into the bike lane landed me
with an L1 compression fracture...mostly healed and I'm a little arthritic,
I lost 2” after my second back surgery. I was riding Albatross way before
then and always used a short stem, never changed from my drops. I finally
got longer stems and that is better but only because I was riding too short
stems. My stems now with Choco bars are 8 and 9 cm where I was riding
I have been really happy with two different sets of Hunt wheels on my
bikes. Fast, light, durable. Great customer service. For around $500 they
have some nice aluminum rim brake options:
