Welcome.

I use the heel to pedal method also for saddle height, and modify as needed.

My PBH is also 83 and I ride a 55 Platypus, which is perfect. Years ago I
test rode a 60 Cheviot and it was way too big. I think 55 is your size.

I've offered to buy the FW and extractor from George. He wants a check in
the mail, which I will happily provide, but I'm not going to be in front of
my checkbook until after Labor Day. Anyway, we'll get there

I also could probably do the modification of a normal extractor on my
lathe, but that also would wait until after labor day. George's tool gets
us there for a lot less work.

[RBW] Re: Me rummaging through YOUR parts box: single speed freewheels

2023-08-22 Thread Peter Adler
If Bill's not interested in the modified BMX extractor, I am.

I have a Phil + ENO wheel that I've had for about a decade, having bought
it off eBay figuring "what's the big deal? You just use a regular BMX
extractor, get it off the hub, then move on with your life, right?". When
the wheel arrived, I discovered that NOPE! that doesn't work. I couldn't
figure any way to get the freewheel off without wrecking it, which seemed
like a terrible waste. At the time, I emailed the Phil guys, who told me to
bring the wheel down and they'd get the pricy-nice freewheel off without
trashing it; I assume they've modified a BMX extractor (and probably other
extractors as well) to remove miscellaneous freewheels installed on Phil
hubs without sufficient attention paid to axle clearance. Unfortunately, I
never made it down to San Jose before I gave up the car; now a Phil
expedition would be a much bigger task.

And so my useful wheel and usable-by-somebody else freewheel have sat ever
since, unused and taking up space.

I'd gladly buy the extractor and lend it to my neighbor Bill as needed.
Alternately, he could buy it and lend it to me.

This is all very helpful. 55cm seems more versatile. I'm unlikely to put
drop bars on it, but, still. If I can find a used bargain I'll try a 60,
else I'll go for the 55. Really appreciate the kind and quality of feedback

[RBW] Re: Me rummaging through YOUR parts box: single speed freewheels

2023-08-22 Thread George Schick
I may be your man. I have an 18T White ENO in my parts box that has had
minimal use and I'm unlikely to ever use again. I also have a BMX
freewheel removal tool on which I had a machinist widen the center hole so
it can fit over a PW hub's axle cap, if you're interested.

[RBW] Summer Riding in Alberta

2023-08-22 Thread Mack Penner
Hi people,
I have been on a small eric rohmer kick this year, and when I started
watching the tales of the four seasons it occurred to me that it would be
fun to document a week of riding in every season. I had the idea in the
summer, so first up is my tale of the summer. Nothin' fancy, I just perched
my phone on my water bottle like a hundred times during my daily rides in
the week from 14-18 August. I was gonna put it to music, but then I thought
that if the goal is to document seasonal riding vibes the sounds that the
season makes are important! Filmed in southern alberta on my atlantis, my
joe, my homer, and finally my quickbeam.
Vid's here . Hope you find it
fun!
Enjoy the rest of August,

[RBW] Me rummaging through YOUR parts box: single speed freewheels

2023-08-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
You are sitting on one or more single speed freewheels. You'd rather have
money than wait for a single speed project to develop. I may be willing to
liberate what you've got.

I'd consider any size White Industries ENO freewheel. My offer for a White
Industries ENO is $50 plus shipping.

A generic BMX-like freewheel would need to be compatible with a 3/32"
chain, and I would consider any size EXCEPT a 16. My budget for a generic
BMX freewheel would be $10 plus shipping.

Let me know if you want my money!

Re: [RBW] Riv Rider Recipes

2023-08-22 Thread exliontamer
I read Eat Bacon and lost a bit of weight. I'm already relatively in shape
for my age but have continued to use keto-ish methods when I want to lose a
bit. As a lifelong diet/lifestyle thing, I'm skeptical, & I flat out don't
see it working for vegetarians in a good way. If you already like meat,
leafy greens, fatty things, etc. I think it's a great way to shed excess
weight periodically. I've had friends with weight issues have borderline
miraculous results that were life changing.

I just like food (especially noodles) too much to be dogmatic about diets.
That said, one of my go to things that works on keto is a trad Cobb Salad.
No alterations (aside from watercress/chicory which are next to impossible
to find) and no store bought or creamy dressings. Just make your own
vinaigrette. In the opposite realm I've been obsessed with Assassin's
Spaghetti lately. You need a big pan but it's fun to make.

Re: [RBW] Re: Saddle Height

2023-08-22 Thread exliontamer
Aside from the subjectivity of saddle height I would attempt to try
different sizes of bikes to see which feels better to you. I realize that's
next to impossible with a Rivendell but if you have bikes that fit you well
I think the knowledge can work laterally. I had a friend buy an Appaloosa
from Riv, went off of their sizing method/recommendation over the phone and
ended up with a bike they felt was too big. Fast forward years later, we
just visited the shop a month ago, they test rode an Appaloosa that was a
size smaller and strongly preferred it. We're all built differently and
even with experience it's difficult to tell how you feel about it before
you actually ride it.
Also they obviously know what they're doing & their sizing methods/bar &
stem recommendations have steered my wife right twice. Just wanted to relay
that story 'cos them bikes is expensive.

 Hello everyone,

I'm posting a ride report. It's my first and I hope this meets your
rigorous group standards for what a "ride" consists of. For me, a ride is
 a
ride - short or long, intense or easy, fast or party pace.

Most of my rides these days are with my family (wife and 3 year old
son). I am reporting on our week of rides vacationing on the Island of
Oléron, of the coast of France (we live inland near Fontainebleau, so
Oléron is only a few hours' drive away). Oléron is the second largest
Island (after Corsica) in Metropolitan France. It's got a fairly mild
climate in winter and summer and the main industries (if you want to call
them that) are oyster farming, salt production, and wine growing. So, if
you like quiet beaches, bikes, white wine, and oysters, it's not the worst
 place to spend your vacation.

We took our 2 Clems, a Burley Bee trailer, and our kid's bike on the
bike of the car and drive the 4 and half hours to get to the island,
sitting in traffic to get across the bridge until we finally made it to a
small BnB in the village of Dolus. We then parked the car and didn't touch
it for the rest of the week. All our trips around the island were by bike
and it is almost a perfect island for bike exploring on bike paths or
dedicated bike lanes (there's only a few places we found where you can't
avoid going onto a big main road with not shoulder). There are over 130 km
of dedicated bike paths on the 30x8km island.

The weather was less than stellar the first day we arrived - it was
raining most of the drive to the island, and though the rain had stopped,
it was cold and dreary the first day. That first evening we rode down to
 La
Chevalerie for an "Oyster festival" though, I think it was just an ad hoc
restaurant that one of the oyster farms set up for people vacationing on
the island. Either way, I had the best oysters I've ever had, really great
moules frites (which, we probably ate at least once a day while we were
there), and decent bottle of local Pineau. We shivered a bit sitting
outside with our meal, but once we were back on our bikes and riding
through the cold night air, it was extremely pleasant riding weather.

The rest of the week , it was warm, sunny and yeah, more/less perfect
 for riding and swimming.

Our rides consisted mostly of riding la Cotinière or St. Pierre
d'Oléron a few km away, or a slightly longer ride to St. Trojan les Bains
in the south (to ride the famous little train that's there) or go see Fort
Boyard from Boyardville. The routes to St Trojan or Boyardville go through
tons of oyster-beds, and it's nice rustic scenery to ride through. The
island is almost perfectly flat, so there's not much elevation to speak of
 - most of our rides were meandering around, stopping to look at horses,
take photos, or check google maps again because we had gotten off track.
Most of the bike routes are gravel or paved, but a few of them went
 through
small forest tracks and we found ourselves in a bit of mud the first
 couple
nights riding back in the dark after dinner (Google maps has some fun
 ideas
about bike routes - definitely can take you off the beaten path, sometimes
right into someone's garden, but always an adventure. After a few er,
 um...
mistakes, we starting paying better attention to the bike path signs and
stuck to them a bit more closely).

Re: [RBW] Riv Rider Recipes

2023-08-22 Thread Patrick Moore
I expect that the modern biomedical sciences simply don't have the right
epistemological or conceptual apparatus (having in mind the scientific
parable of the fishing net: "what my net doesn't catch isn't fish") to
capture everything that constitutes true nutrition. I know that in
traditional Chinese cooking the attitude toward food and care with which it
is prepared is said to affect the effect of the food on the eater. I think
this involves the *chi* which I know does not belong to any physical
category (it's not "spiritual" but relates to the level of "vital force,"
not reducing this to physical categories either). And other writers say
that it is the organic integrity of the soil that determines the nutritive
(again, not solely in terms of modern categories) value of food -- simply
shoving in nitrogen and other elements is not enough. (
https://www.treehugger.com/who-invented-the-idea-of-organic-farming-and-organic-food-4862673,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_James,_4th_Baron_Northbourne)

I agree that Pollan's is a good rule of thumb.
