bought a 11-36t cassette for my new appa and already have some altus' that
i'd like to use ( i guess i have back up shimano rear in case they dont)

RG, I used to be able to fit BG rock n roads ( 700x43) on my Orange 64 QB a
few years back with the wheel in the middle to rear of the dropouts. And the
RnRs have some decent side knobs to take into account. Not sure of exact mm

Yes, of course it will work. I have a friction 9 speed set up on my
Rivendell and, yes, it is a little fussy, but it works incredibly smoothly
and I have a clutch derailleur. I use the Silver1 shifter because it's
longer and therefore slightly more precise IMHO.

i'm not a pro mechanic by any means but i've used the standard shimano
lever on a tektro canti front and shimano v brake rear and didn't really
have beef with the stopping power (casual use, not performance at all, in
NYC)

and it's too big for you. It's a great bike for NYC. Mine is even set up
singlespeed right now. It still rides amazing. Even for me - the Appaloosa
feels BIG! But mine fits me well and I love it.
