[RBW] wtb: 26.8 seatpost, 120-130mm quill stem

2024-05-16 Thread Brent Knepper
looks like I've a periwinkle build coming up in the near future, which I
should be able to get rollin with my small but intentional parts bin :) in
need of a seatpost and stem though!

26.8 seatpost needs:
-longer than 250mm
-15-20mm traditional setback is great, not looking for straight or waybakk
-weird/funky/vintage/esoteric always encouraged, I can get a $5 used kalloy
locally :)

120-30mm stem needs:
-120-130 length only, already have some shorter stems if I don't really
need a long-o
-usual 22.2 quill
-90º or 7-shape, not lookin for a riser stem
-150-250mm quill length is fine, don't need to get the bars high or slammed
-25.4 clamp or faceplate is good, or 26.0 but only with a faceplate is also
good (prolly using rons ortho bars for anyone curious)
-W.F.V.E. also welcomed here

thanks for your consideration!

I'm another person whose been showing up to road bike group rides on a
road-style Riv the last year or so and it's been a fun journey! I was lucky
to buy Valerie's old Riv Bleriot on here and I maintain it as the
befendered iteration of my two "fast" bikes- aka bikes with smooth tires
and drop bars. it's nice having a dedicated fender bike for when a surprise
midwest rain storm passes through 2 hours before a ride

anyway I always show up in a t-shirt or hoodie and chaco sandals and my
bars level with the leather saddle. While the RoadieBoys™ seem confused
about socializing with someone whose appearance/bike doesn't meet their
expectations, the women and other folks always say how beautiful the
Bleriot is, how the fenders are so smart in keeping my sandal'd feet clean
while being helpful to whoever might be behind me, and how neat it is that
I'm still fast "enough" to keep pace despite not having the roadie-culture
promoted bike, shoes, or clothing :)

Leah, I wish you the best on your road bike journey! I admire your
commitment to Rivendells (an easy brand to commit to honestly), and hope a
Roadeo comes along either at a good deal or with beautiful lugs to add to
your hella colorful collection

Leah - the drop from Will's saddle to bars was an intentional choice.
He chose a smaller frame with a raised up saddle to achieve a racier
position. My bars on the Roadeo are set fairly level with my saddle. With
drop-bar bikes, I tend to choose the frame with the minimum necessary
stand-over clearance to ensure I can have level bars without having to
raise them up high in a way that looks funky to me. I am not a
weight-weenie but perhaps worth mentioning that the Roadeo as shown with
bags but minus pump is 25 lbs and 11 ounces. The Gallop, minus lock and
pump, is 34 pounds. Some of the difference is my dynamo hub, lights, and
and racks. I'd guess 5-6 pounds is the difference without those
 accessories.

Here is a collage for anyone who doesn't want to follow the link. I
measured from front to rear drop-out and both the Roadeo and Gallop are
 175. Looking at where the vertical segment of the garage door intersects
the frame is pretty interesting. I don't really understand how all the
extra space in the Gallop frame is achieved. Riv magic.

[RBW] hoppin on on the brevet wagon - Chicago Randonneurs Barrington 200k

2024-04-28 Thread Brent Knepper
hey friends, from seeing folks sharing east coast and west coast brevet
ride reports in the rbw/ibob/650b ecosystem, I'd like to share yesterday's
ride as the Chicago area finally has a rando organization!

yesterday's 200k ride was an out n back from Barrington, IL to Darien, WI-
the ultimate destination being one of many locations known as Wisconsin's
Official State Cultural Centers: a Kwik Trip

gas station

I was on my crust malocchio with 38s, flat pedals, and a berthoud saddle
I'm struggling to break in. it fits me really well and I'm also so comfy on
this bike for hella long rides

this is the new chirando's 4th event of the season

 and
while my other riding friends have said the earlier events have had
tremendous turn outs, yesterday's Barrington event had an impressive 14
people I think? it's impressive for two reasons:
1. doin century rides all over the Chicago area and I maybe get 1000ft of
elevation for the whole deal, its flat here. the Barrington brevet is ~4400
ft total, so this may be a bit intimidating for riders who have no
opportunities to practice climbing
2. the lead, buried in this third paragraph, but-- the forecast had *strong*
winds
all day, incl. 40mph gusts and in the worst possible direction. midwestern
riders are familiar with constant wind, it's kinda like climbing but you
never get to descend :-/ the friends I was planning to ride who are
resilient riders bailed solely because of the wind

and with that, 14 or so silly people met up at one gas station to ride to
another gas station with a few gas stations as controls. that's the midwest
for ya baby! overnight rain kept the roads wet for the ride start and get
just enough grit on everyone's chains but the wind (gonna mention wind a
lot so settle in) and sun dried out the roads and humidified the air in the
first hour. groups formed based on pace and familiarity. I didn't know
anyone so I bopped around between groups at first, sayin hi, but settled in
with some kind and conversational grav dads who were interested in keeping
the pace fast n fun

I wore a shirt with ducks on it, running shorts, and chacos. first 30ish
miles we kept it in the low 20s through the rolling hills and out into the
flat farmland. I had assumed based off wind direction there'd be a slight
tailwind most of the way north, and I wanted to conserve my energy for the
second half where I feared it would be 60 miles of pushing into a gnarly
headwind. well the tailwinds mostly never found us, instead the first half
was more core strength focused in leaning against the crosswinds

there was exactly one point where the glory of a full blast midwestern tail
wind came, along Queen Anne Rd heading north Hebron, IL. 15 or so miles of
just effortless 28-29mph pedaling as we got closer and closer to The
Basketball

alas dear reader, that municipal basketball was also the harbinger of
changing wind. I'm not from the midwest and I get super demoralized by
headwinds. they're so boring to ride against. I tapered down and fell away
from the fast folks, fearful that I needed to save my energy for the
remaining 70 miles. two seasoned rando riders with various kit/bike swag
from big rides including PBP caught up to me for a while, and once we were
at the Kwik Trip mecca other groups reconvened. KT being kinda like a
buc-ees or sheetz, we were able to eat real food and get better drinks.
gallon jugs of water were collectively bought and shared. a few people made
a couple rounds at the free sample table inside giving away pizza slices.
it's the best part of long rides- just eating pure garbage in a desperate
quest for salt and calories with elation instead of guilt

just as I was rolling out and another group was rolling in, I realized my
rear tube had a slow leak, so I bid farewell to my morning new friends to
throw a new tube in and joined this later group of riders. it's something I
like about rando rides: if you'd like company, there's company to be found.
leave dropping to the roadie culture, I suppose, solidarity is more fun
anyway :)

and solidarity was desperately needed because *jfc* the wind the rest of
the day was mean. this being an out and back, that amazing cruise north on
Queen Anne was now bad. ruff gusts, the four of us barely keeping it at
10mph, just for hours and hours. along the route is the Kikkoman factory
and I fantasized about all the wonderful sodium in a bottle of their shoyu

so, I dunno, we did that for like five hours. control stops were a relief
to get all the non-shoyu sodium off our faces, reapply sunscreen, and mix
other sodium into our bidons. with a different forecast, there's beauty to
appreciate on this route from the

I have a bleriot with paul centerpulls and it clears 42s with fenders, or
48s without, but I too would prefer it to have cantis! the pauls are my
only centerpull experience, and though they stopped well I always observed
a lot of squishiness at the lever as well- which I've since reduced a lot
of that squish with beefier/more rigid cable hangers, linear brake housing
with filed flat ends, and even shimming the housing to close up gaps the
cable stops

I can now see the remaining squish is the actually the power of the brakes
compressing brake pads a *lot. *that's pretty cool when ya think of the
modulation aspect, but my other bike with cantis and 48s has just as much
braking power without all tinkering ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ time saved on brake tinkering
just went into drivetrain tinkering but hey waddayagonnado

2023-10-31 Thread Brent Knepper
just trying mine on today and I too went up from a usual 10 to a 11. at
first I was worried I there still wasn't enough room with my cute winter
wool socks on, until I realized a separate layer of cardboard forms were
still hiding inside, but all good once I realized my mistake :)

I'm a big socks n chacs fan in the shoulder szns, and I will say the
bedrock soles are hella flat in comparison to chacos's arch cradling
technology. anyone else notice a similar arch-love disparity?

[RBW] wtb 100-110mm nitto not-so-high quill stem

2023-08-18 Thread Brent Knepper
Hey pals, I'm looking for a stem for my build with a tall headtube and tall
26.0 bars, rendering the couple of talluxes I got as too tall :/

Anyone have anything on hand? I'm looking in the direction of a dynamic or
pearl with a 26.0 clamp, sub 200mm quill length. Maybe I got the model
names mixed up, but yeah kinda a reguar degular road bike quill stem. Happy
to consider other brands/older model stuff as well

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: A College Clem

2023-08-06 Thread Brent Knepper
I agree with Bill's sentiments above. Clem at college would be so enjoyable
for your son, if that is worth the risk that others have shared their
fears/experiences thoroughly now.

I dunno how the timing would work out, but with the upcoming Chicago rbw
ride you're organizing you could chat up Chucky at Mack's in Evanston. He's
got a fun hustle of Riv'ing up older mtbs (more on that on his IG
account: https://www.instagram.com/marygoldcyclery/) that may scratch the
itch for riv flavor without the risk to the Clem.

[RBW] Re: Everglades

2022-03-05 Thread Brent Knepper
That looks so fun Laing, I'm adding that canal edge to my list of bike
spots in the everglades if I ever get back there with a bike.

one of my favorite lost distance bike ride memories was a 2 week tour from
Miami>chokoloskee island>marco island, then ferry down to key west and back
up to Miami via Rt 1. lotsa lotsa dry gravel/sand canal paths and roads in
the winter to break up the pedaling on 41 and rt 1. Would love to see where
else you find to ride!
