[RBW] Renaissance Bicycles Closeout Inventory
We've taking a little time to list the good stuff we have for sale on the website. Most of these items are very Riv-ish and are still in the original packaging (unless otherwise specified): http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/inventory/ All the other items -- there are lots of random little things and general bike shopish items -- will eventually find their way to this Group or on our eBay Store. Just send me an email or call if you would like to purchase any of the items. [RBW] Re: sad e-mail from Renaissance
Thanks to all the fine people on this list for your support over the last three years. It is not a pleasant decision to close Renaissance Bicycles, but is the right decision for our family. We will try to update the website by the end of the weekend with our remaining inventory. Of particular interest to this group are a 52cm Waterford Hillborne frameset, and a 54cm and 58cm Hunqa frameset. There are some Nitto racks, handlebars, Brooks saddles, and other Riv- ish items. We also have a complete 56cm double toptube Hillborne that was used as a demo bike – but we might just keep it for ourselves. Keep in mind that we are not blowing out the inventory; we would rather send the frames back to Rivendell and our other suppliers rather than discount their wonderful products; we have never agreed with the online discounters approach to business. We will use eBay to unload our random little parts that can't be sold otherwise. We will officially end the business before the end of the year. This simply makes sense from a business perspective. Most likely, we will simply absorb any unsold inventory into our personal assets and pay tax based on their value. That allows us to sell anything else off at our leisure. As mentioned in our blog update, we are especially grateful to Rivendell for all of their support. Grant, John, and the rest of the Gang have been exceedingly nice to our little business and we can't express how special Rivendell truly is, both in their attitude and highly ethical business practices. We do have a few more projects to finish, so there are a couple of unique bikes still to come out of the workshop. [RBW] OT: The Bicycle is Art website
As some of you may already know, Renaissance Bicycles created a little side project to showcase various art forms that are influenced by (and usually a result of) the love for cycling: http://theBicycleisArt.com While the website is not Rivendell specific, I think that a big part of the Riv appeal is the aesthetic beauty of the frames and the artistic appreciation by the owners. In other words, Riv owners seem to have a great sense of the artfullness of the bicycle and the accompanying cycling culture. Cheers! @ Andrew, Yes, the is the Sugino Alpina Triple. Looks good and works very well. I never felt the Sugino 500T was in any way sloppy when shifting, but the Alpina is definitely better. [RBW] Slightly OT: Renaissanced Bicycle Google Group
While Riv-ish pursuits occupy a lot of our time at Renaissance Bicycles, we are also interested in tinkering with and upgrading classic bikes. Anything from 650B conversions to reviving old Raleigh 3-speeds. These bikes may not always be the most desirable bikes to the masses (just like Rivendells), we see the untapped potential in vintage beater forgotten by others. And based on the number of questions we receive regarding how-to's, we suspect there are enough interested renaissancers out there to provide a proper community. Hence, we have created the Renaissanced Bicycle Google Group: http://groups.google.com/group/renaissanced-bicycle-group This group is not intended for just our customers, but rather for anyone interested in reviving a classic bike with modern components. I much prefer the Japanese tape which is amazing stuff. What sucks is that the Neubaum comes in great colors. [RBW] 1 Toptube or 2 -- Comparing the Two Versions of the Hillborne
In the Shop we happen to have two 56cm Hillbornes. One is the Taiwanese made Maxway, the other is the Waterford version from WI. Of course, we couldn't help but take photos: http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/gallery/?album=7gallery=66 Obviously, the double toptuber is the Waterford version. It also includes braze-ons for cantilever brakes, and a rear bridge for the cable stop. The fork crowns are different. Because I know people will ask ... the weight difference between the frames is 8 ounces. For perspective, that is about the difference between a full water bottle and one that is 3/4 full. I agree with Johnny ... what you described is the target use for the Hillborne. The Hillborne certainly rides well on the pavement and gravel. My suggestion is to consider the double top-tube version available in the 56cm+ sizes. With the extra toptube, I don't think the total weight of rider + gear would be an issue. Yes, we really like the silver SRAM road group as well ... but they are becoming really hard to find. Likewise, Shimano is slowly fading to a Gray color with their comparable Ultegra 6700 series. We're snapping up the 6600 series where we can. To answer Patrick's question, the friction shifting was the customer's request. [RBW] Re: NAHBS - Observations - Longish Post
Actually, I think the judges agree that classic simplicity is best. After all, the Best of Show bike by Dave Wages really was a classic frame done in polished 953. At first glance it might have the appearance of Bling, but a closer look (which I had the pleasure to do first-hand) reveals a lot more: http://www.handmadebicycleshow.com/2010/02/2010-shimano-nahbs-award-winners/ As the article states, Asked for the secret of the bike’s success, Wages said, 'It’s shiny but understated. I keep a classic look to my bikes and there’s no one element that draws attention to itself. The beauty is integral.' Bryan On Feb 28, 7:32 pm, Marty mgie...@mac.com wrote: Got to see what all the fuss was about on Saturday morning. Granted, there was plenty there to be inspired by, but honestly I was a bit disappointed. Too much bling for me. Too many sky's the limit designs. Too many over-worked wanna-be-masterpieces that showed off mad skills with torches, welders and spray guns, but lacked the subtle simplicity that demonstrates the restraint and maturity of a true master - or the humility and honesty of an up-an-comer. Now I'm not saying I could do better. I've never built a bike from raw tubes - I know my limits. But it seems that the premise of the show itself may be a misnomer when so much of the work is done by CNC driven lasers, water jets and similar computer controlled machines. IMHO - the intricate detail made possible by computers adds little to the overall end result, and in many cases becomes a distraction. I may be alone in this opinion - there was a whole lot of drool left on everything that pushed the envelope in that regard. But gone was the Shaker-like simplicity, practicality and celebration of the fundamental practical forms that define two-wheeled transportation. No need to look for innovative little details that mark progress - it was in your face - chromed, polished and begging for attention. In many respects I felt as if I may as well have attended a Low Rider bike show. I guess I'm showing my age here, but the only booths I found myself lingering were those where the frames were basically triangles, the paint was basically one color - maybe two, and the overall vibe was that of timelessness. Hank Folson was there with his Henry James lugs. Richard Sachs with a pair of dirt-encrusted Cross bikes. Peter Mooney. Chris Bishop. Bilenky. (Way to haul in the whole workshop guys!) Plenty of pics on other sites, so you can judge for yourself. I found myself back my the room looking at the Flickr Rivendell pages just for some peace of mind. Worked like a charm. Yes, I think the Nitto Campee racks really complement the Orange Hillborne well. [RBW] Re: RBW Owners Google Map
Yes, the different placement markers are really just my own fine- tuning. You can change the type of Placement Marker by clicking on it when in the editing window (aka writing the content of the marker.) [RBW] Re: 650B conversion questions
I have it on good authority (http://sheldonbrown.com/podcasts/ grantpetersen.mp3) that a 700x23c wheel + tire is roughly equivalent in diameter to a 650Bx38c wheel + tire. So if you can measure your BB drop with a normal wheelset, this should give a pretty good idea of the predicted BB drop. And from experience, I would leave the Canti mounts in place until you actually get the 650B rims test fitted to the bike ... just in case (for whatever unforeseen reason) Calipers don't work, you have a backup plan. ATMO, any bike is a good candidate for a fun conversion. Assuming this is not your primary bike, there is no harm in putting a worthwhile bike back into service and learning a few things along the way. And if it is your main ride, do it anyway. Good luck and Happy Holidays, Bryan On Dec 23, 1:19 pm, Steve Palincsar palin...@his.com wrote: On Wed, 2009-12-23 at 10:11 -0800, Jim Cloud wrote: I was giving some consideration to converting a 27 frame bicycle to either a 700c or 650B size. Based on my e-mail conversations with Ed Braley (a frequent internet forum contributor who has a wealth of experience with 650B conversions), I decided that my bike would not be very suitable for a 650B conversion, although I'm still considering a conversion to 700c. One consideration, obviously, is the length of the crank arm that you're planning to use. You didn't mention the size of your frame, but generally a frame up to 61 cm would be most suitable for a Normal looking conversion. You'll get a bit more bottom bracket drop switching 630 to 584 than switching 622: 4mm more if all else remains the same. You'll also need 4mm more brake reach. Those 4mm are often insignificant switching from 630 to 622, but since some brakes barely have enough reach for the 622-584 conversion, the extra may be a few mm too far. Crank length can be an issue. On your side, though, back when 630 was the common tire size, 170mm was the common crank length, whereas today it's considered short by many. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Slightly OT: The Men Behind the Machines / Marketing
As it so happens, I came across both the new Breezer website (via Alan's post about his latest photo adventure -- http://www.ecovelo.info/2009/12/21/breezer-catalog-and-website/) and the new Garry Fisher catalog on the same day. What I found interesting was the striking difference between the marketing of these two fathers of mountain biking: Gary Fisher's words and images are all over the Fisher catalog -- http://fisherbikes.com/gary -- and he kinda looks like somebody's crazy uncle who takes his fashion cues from Hawaii Five-O. In stark contrast, on the Breezer website there is not much mention of Joe Breeze -- http://www.breezerbikes.com/index.php/about-joe-breeze.html -- who (based solely on the website photo) could easily pass as your friendly tax accountant. Like Grant / Rivendell, both men are really big proponents and advocates of Utility / Urban / Practical / All-Rounder kind of biking, but I would guess that your average cyclist would not tie any of these names to cycling for transportation / utility. So, this leads me to a bunch of questions (which I will limit to 3- ish): (1) Do you think Rivendell should include a little more Grant Petersen in their catalog? (2) How much of Fisher / Breezer's product clout comes via their perceived personal legend? (3) To my knowledge, there really is no father of all-rounding ... should it be Grant / Riv? What about Rene Herse or Alex Singer? [RBW] Re: Our Green Sam Hillborne Shop Bike
Yes, you are correct sir -- Pletscher ESGE Zoom I really like two qualities of the kickstand: (1) The easy setup (2) It is surprisingly light -- at least as compared to most kickstands. The downside is that it seems to hang a little too low off the chainstay for my liking. This may not be apparent in the photos, since it is in use. On this bike, it doesn't quite tuck out of the way, but that might be a result of the use of the kickstand plate. Since this is a demo bike, the configuration has / will change. We might mount a Pletscher double for comparison. The bike has already undergone a few minor changes ... it now has a Honey B17 saddle and some VO fenders awaiting for installation. The brake choice came down to the decision by the customer. One thing to note on the brakes: We installed the Tektro 556 extra long reach brakes, and even those were almost not long enough (aka bottomed-out) on the 650B rim. [RBW] More Gallery Photos: Jamil's Sam Hillborne
Hey All, We've added another set of Rivendell studio photos. The finished product is a 48cm 650B bike with lots of classic parts ... Nitto and Rivendell and Shimano 9-speed make-up this build. Let me know if you have any questions about the frame or parts. Enjoy the weekend, Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles BTW -- We also took some detail photos of the Betty Foy frame ... we'll post that next week. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Hey Rene, I am the photographer and mastermind of the whole operation. Thanks for the complements, Bryan On May 13, 12:56 pm, Rene Valbuena valbu...@ix.netcom.com wrote: Very nice bike! I think the silver color is fabulous ... it definitely gives the bike a real retro appearance. You may also notice that the bike is lacking the seattube decal ... which is the way it arrived. Fine by me. Obviously, I went for the subtle / classic look with the black Brooks B17 narrow saddle, black Cinelli cork tape, practical dual-duty Shimano pedals, and a black Bike Burrito. Soon to come is the complementary Shimano 16t freewheel, a pair of classic VO bottle cages, and the new silver Planet Bike Superflash. I've ridden it about 30+ miles so far, so it still needs a little fine- tuning and a few adjustments. Of course, the ride is wonderful; very good at low speeds, confident in high-speed turns, smooth over the rough stuff, and just a real comfortable riding position. Let me know if you have any questions about the parts, build, or details of the Quickbeam ... I'll be happy to share. [RBW] Re: Detail photos of the new Riv Sam Hillborne
Hey Eric, Yes, I tried to ensure that the color was a accurate as possible. The frame has a really rich metallic green ... something that is unique but by no means gaudy. Both the decals and the fork detail is a rich cream color, and the bands around the decals are a purplish blue. Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles On May 1, 8:23 pm, EricP ericpl...@aol.com wrote: Thanks. Nice to see some close ups. The lugs look even nicer in close-up. Especially the cut-outs behind the head tube. And the front of the seat tube lug. Is the highlight on the fork cream (like the Atlantis) or off-white? [RBW] Betty Foys in the Wild
Hey All, For those interested, the Betty Foy is finding its way into the hands of some appreciative riders. Here are two worthwhile links that provide both nice photos and ideas for personalizing the Foy: 1. http://andrewbikes.blogspot.com/ -- The Velo Fellow put this beauty together for his wife. Very nice! More photos are here: http://tinyurl.com/dh5wx8 2. http://www.ecovelo.info/2009/04/12/gallery-dotties-rivendell-betty-foy/ -- Dottie's Betty Foy with all of the Rivendell-esque touches. She waffled back and forth on buying one, but obviously she is happy with her decision. We showed our Betty Foy frames off this weekend at a local outdoor show and got lots of positive feedback. Simply great stuff. Bryan --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Dreaming of the New Rivs
Hey All, The Rivendell Dealer network got word today from RBW that the new Hillborne frames and final edition of the Quickbeam are about a week away. This means we will get our greedy little hands on these items in about two weeks. On a side note, I ordered a 58cm Quickbeam for my personal ride. And to be honest, I am almost giddy with excitement ... I can't think of another bike that I have literally dreamed (while asleep) about riding. [RBW] Re: Weights in the real world
I think most recreational cyclist have fallen victim to the marketing of weight. Manufacturers use weight as a competitive comparison ... furthering the idea that lighter = better. In other words, they demonstrate the superiority of their product simply by being lighter. Why choose theire Pedal X when our Pedal Y is lighter? Unfortunately, we often take their measurements as evidence of superiority, although if you held a 200g seatpost in your left hand and a 250g seatpost in your right hand, it would be difficult to tell the difference. We agree with RBW ... superior durability and quality is much more valuable than a few ounces of weight. Before weight, we should consider materials. A recent example: A customer was interested in Moots titanium seatpost, but opted for an equally high-end carbon fiber post because it weighed less. Unfortunately, he wouldn't listen to the more sensible argument that the Moots post will last forever ... overtighten it in the repair stand, crash the bike, hit it with a hammer, it won't matter. And it goes without saying that most recreational cyclists (myself included) should lose a few pounds off their waistline before wringing their hands over a few ounces on their bicycles. I know that I am preaching to the Choir, but it feels good to put my two cents out there ... [RBW] Re: Brooks Alternative
On our latest top-secret project, we decided to give the VO VS-6 saddle (http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/components/saddles/) a try. While most of our retrofits and upgrades get Brooks saddles, our initial impressions of the VO saddle are good. Just by visual comparison, it appears a little longer than the Brooks Swift and it is definitely more narrow, and it is of quality materials and construction. We have Brooks on our daily riders, so as mentioned before, don't be lured away by saving a few dollars ... over the next 10 years, that money will be inconsequential; we are a little dubious about the Cardiff saddles, but we will get a demo saddle soon. The deciding factor was that it gave our bike build (a 1962 Legnano) a racier appearance, and that we will use the matching Elk hide sewn- on bar covers (http://www.velo-orange.com/elsebarco.html) from VO. For us it was not about the price, but came down to the appropriate appearance and intended use for the bike. Realistically, you probably can't make a wrong decision.
