[RBW] FS: Two pairs of the new MUSA shorts sz. L & a Woolywarm wool jersey sz. XL

2024-01-21 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I have one Black and one Ranger Green pair of the new MUSA shorts for sale.
Two small marks on the right rear pocket of the green shorts. Both are
size large and weren't worn much.

$70 for the black and $65 for the green or $110 for both.

The Woolywarm jersey is navy merino wool and no size tag so I'll provide
the measurements below. It's in excellent condition. I never wore it but
bought it from someone else, although it looks almost new. Maybe they
didn't wear it either? It's really, really nice and if it fit me I'd keep
it.

Armpit to armpit: 22"
Collar to hem: 30"
Collar to end of the short sleeve is 14"

All prices include shipping.

If you want everything let's say $160.

Thanks

[RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-21 Thread daniel belyusar
Hiya,
Myself and another list member rode it for the first time last year. He on
a Riv, me on my 83 Trek 620. (also another friend from Iowa and his dad).
We met a number of Riv-riders including Reginald along the way ;). Overall
it was a mixed bag. I never really got around to writing my scene report so
here goes the brain dump...

Logistics:
- We joined a small bike club based in Dubuque. We drove from Chicago to
Dubuque, then they carried our duffles and bikes across, chartered a bus,
and arranged with the organizers to secure a plot of land in each town for
the 30-40 people from the club. It was honestly pretty spartan and not all
that great. Part of the problem was that it was very hot almost the whole
week; so without a place to go to at the end of the day, we ended up having
to either kill time along the way, or immediately re-pack to ride to a
public pool or something. Just sitting in an open field in 90 degrees and
humid is not fun for me. As someone mentioned, everyone who I met along the
way that used Pork Belly loved it - they set up a tent for you, have
showers and beer and I think even entertainment. They're also very
well-connected to the organizers over many years and seemed to have the
prime locations. And yes, there are plenty of other companies including
portable AC'd huts if you want!

- If I were to do it again, I think I'd make arrangements with locals in
each town to camp on their lawn and bike pack (the organizers support a
message board to make arrangements). An idea I heard a number of times
which also seemed good if you can swing it: have a SAG vehicle shared
between a small crew. It can be a car, but prob would be what you would
drive to the start. Each day has a main lunch town/ meetup, about half way.
So in the car crew, one person misses a half day of riding, round robin.
The second half driver gets set up in the overnight town, everyone gets a
little AC as needed, and you can get around to stores and maybe even get
out of town a bit to beat the crowds if you want. Some people also rent RVs
and it seems like there are some designated places for them, but again you
need someone to drive.

- WRT to drunken shenanigans, honestly I didn't see much if any of it. The
rides were pretty brutal with the heat and elevation, so if you partied
hard the night before, I was probably way ahead the next day. We might have
had a couple beers in the shade here and there, but when there is still
miles 61 - 80 to go, and its 90 degrees, I think you'd be silly/dangerous
to hit it hard. Once in town, everyone was pretty spread out throughout, so
maybe I just missed it?

The Good:
- I've never really done any long bike touring before (maybe 3 days max) so
this was the longest number of days that all I had to do was ride! Almost
all of the roads are closed and the route obvious, so for 500 mile over 7
days, just wake up and keep pedaling. I could see why some might find the
terrain a bit same-y, but there was a ton of elevation change, really
pretty landscapes, and enough rivers and towns to keep me interested.

- the tech support was amazing. every town (? or most) had a service stop
with a number of very capable, approachable, and affordable crew for
repairs. I wore out a front derailer cable mid week (so many hills!), my
friend broke a spoke on a different day. In both cases it was like 30 min,
$20 and back on the road. Watching them lace up my old Suntour fd on the
'83 Trek, followed by a wireless rear on a carbon fiber '23 Trek for the
next person in line was pretty awesome (new battery for your rd? $60 fully
charged!).

- I thought my bike was perfect. I rode 650b x38 smooth gravel kings, 46-30
front and wide-ish rear, basic tektro brakes. I got a lot of comments both
snarky and fun (met more than one person that had done cross country rides
on 520s and 620s 'back in the day')

- I'm a pretty social person, but I met and rode with a lot of nice
strangers on interesting bikes (see above). Learned about some cool tours,
some cool bikes new and old. Despite the next section, I met quite a few
folks that were into the same things I am. You know the old Honda ads? "You
meet the nicest people on a Honda/ steel bike". As someone said, there is
also that overall good vibe of just nothing but bikers everywhere...

The Bad:
- it was really crowded. I know, of course I expected that, and it was the
50th anniversary, so it might have been particularly packed. For me there
were only a couple of rough patches where it was actually challenging to be
riding with so many people, trying to change lanes etc, and the biggest
headache was the swifties 'ON YOUR LEFT!' when it was crowded and I
couldn't go any more right. I think I had to dismount once owing to a crowd
going around a tight bend. But if you are planning to leave at a leisurely
sun-up time, and riding a modest pace, expect lines for everything (could
be like an hour for a beer or a

[RBW] WTT Woolywarm rollneck sweater M for L

2023-11-09 Thread daniel belyusar
Hi all,
I just picked up the English Merino rollneck sweater from Riv and got the
wrong size. I am hoping someone might have made the same mistake the other
way as they seem out of the L.

Medium, Navy, never worn except to try on, still in bag.
https://www.rivbike.com/products/woolywarm-all-merino-navy-blue-sweater-from-england?variant=40880140714095

Hoping for a large, potentially other colors.

Thanks!

Two things for sale:

One olive color Medium Saddlesack - the old style without the dowel. I
bought this used off the list a couple years ago but only used it once
myself. Used a little previously - mostly the wear is to the leather pad
on the bottom of the bag. I’m just not really a saddlebag person so I’m
going back to panniers. A really nice bag in great shape though. $190

This is Riv adjacent - I think they sell or sold a musette bag from them on
the Riv website. A green Space Age Technologies messenger backpack. This
is the booster pack model. It’s a really nice bag I just bought it when I
lived in a big city and couldn’t leave any bags attached to my bike. Now I
can use panniers thankfully. This has seen limited use and is in excellent
condition. Bag info
$180 shipped.

If anyone needs more info feel free to ask. Paypal is best.

[RBW] Re: Shiny front derailleur for 42/28 Silver crankset

2023-09-27 Thread daniel belyusar
HI Kurt,
I picked up the cheap-y skeleton key FD from Riv when I built my 42/20
Appaloosa a couple months ago and it is frankly pretty remarkable. I am
also using Microshift Thumbies. As the ad copy says it's an "ugly
son-of-a-bitch" but it is a little shiny per spec above. It has an unusual
(to me) cable routing that I think makes it particularly snug. I've
honestly never had a FD go on so quick and with so little adjustment. A
couple hundred miles in, some fairly rough, some quite hilly and it's never
missed a
beat. https://www.rivbike.com/products/derailer-front-stubby-skeleton-key

Both are in good condition. The bar tube bag has very little wear; the
rack shows signs of use. The rack is also the older iteration with the
hanging tabs for panniers. All hardware included. Please see photos for
detailed view of their condition.

Rack is $170 and Bag is $60

Shipping for bar tube bag will be $10.20 for a small flat rate USPS
Priority Mail Box.

Shipping for rack will be UPS. I have a box so can give an accurate quote
if you send me a zip code. Shipping is expensive for these larger items
even though it isn't that heavy.

Can ship both for the price of the rack, since the bag can just be included
in that box.

Thanks

[RBW] FS: MUSA Pants, T-Shirts, A Railroad Shirt, and a Couple Other Things

2023-06-07 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I have the following items for sale:

   - One grey Peace Wheel T-shirt size XL - new but without tags: $15
   - One Blue Platypus T-shirt size XL - worn a few times but in good
   shape: $15
   - One pair of the new Black MUSA pants size Large - worn a couple times,
washed in cold water and lined dried: $90
   - One pair of the old MUSA grey pants size L - in good used condition
but there is a rip on the thigh, which is visible in the pictures - it will
probably need to be repaired: $50
   - One pair of the new Ranger Green MUSA shorts still in the packaging -
   size L: $75
   - One Navy Woolpower 400 1/4 zip sweater sz. XL: $50
   - One Rivendell Railroad Stripe Shirt sz. XL - two oil stains near the
MUSA logo but otherwise in good condition: $60
   - One tig-welded Nitto Bullmoose handlebars (these are not the same as
the filet brazed ones for sale on the Rivendell website) - never used but
mounted in a frame: $100 + cost of shipping (will require a larger box)
   - One pair of 700 x 50 Soma Cazadero tires - never used: $80

Prices don’t include shipping. Individual items can be shipped together to
reduce costs. Please send a zip code and I can supply shipping
information. Any Questions or comments send me a message.

[RBW] FS: fillet brazer Bullmooses

2023-06-04 Thread Daniel
I have some RBW x Nitto fillet brazed Bullmoose bars. These are out of
stock and no longer on the side. The TIG'ed ones are $195 + tax and
shipping. Selling my nice condition used for $180 shipt (less for locals in
LA/OC). Fotos . Or trade for

[RBW] FS: 62cm Hunqapillar Frameset

2023-05-24 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I have a nice 62cm Hunqapillar frameset for sale. I bought it built up off
the list about a year ago but it’s always been too big for me so I’m
reluctantly selling it. I think it’s been sold a few times here but seems
to be in good shape. There is some slight damage to the chain stay, which
is visible in one of the photos. Other than that some paint chips and
scratches and signs of use. Included with sale will be an FSA headset and
Shimano bottom bracket - both installed - and a 28.6” Nitto seat post.
This was one of the frames made with that size seat post. Additionally I
have tig-welded Nitto Bullmoose Handlebars that I could include for an
additional $120. They were never used but installed once.

As far as shipping I have a box I could use and can pack it carefully
myself. I think shipping would be approximately $100 but can get an exact
quote when sold and knowing what zip code I’m shipping to. Also, I can
take it to my local bike shop to have them pack and ship it. That will take
longer - the last time I inquired it was a 10 day lead time to pack and
ship, but that may have gone down. I would estimate an additional $100 for
that.

I'm thinking $1350 for the frameset plus whatever shipping option you
choose. Most payment methods would work.

2023-05-06 Thread Daniel
Hi, all. I have some of the Riv x Nitto Bullmoose bars and would like to
trade for some Chocomoose bars (not Bosco, and I don't remember other
"mooses"--but if you have a different moose, let me know and the worst I
can say is "no").

[RBW] Re: FS: Clem H 59cm Complete (Custom Build)

2023-01-19 Thread Daniel
Update: I was shooting from the hip on pricing the other day and I think
bundling the shipping in isn't fair to the buyer or me. I've decided to
drop the price to $1500 for the bike and then shipping is 100% on the
buyer. I think this is fairer and more transparent.

I hope this makes it more appealing to ya.

[RBW] FS: Clem H 59cm Complete (Custom Build)

2023-01-16 Thread Daniel
Selling my Clem H to declutter my garage (AKA my office). It's latest build
(where it got its least mileage) is as a trail bike and that's redundant
for me.

The size is 59cm which I measured as the following:
Seattube (CTC):58cm
Toptube (CTC):63cm
Chainstays:56cm
Headtube:21.75cm
HTA:72⁰
STA:72⁰
TT Slope:4⁰

This is an earlier green "H" with the cool swoopy seatstays build up 8
speed as follows:
Mech - rear:Deore XT
Mech - front:Deore XT
Crank:Suntour XC Pro
Bars:Nitto Bullmoose w/ Newbaums tape and ESI silicon grips
Brakes:Deore XT (black) v-brake
Brake Levers:Deore XT
Shifters:Suntour (mounted under the bars)…working OK but some slipping,
so I didn't trim the cables yet…you might prefer different shifters or
other positions.
Seatpost:OEM
Headset:Tange (original)
Rims:Velocity Cliffhangers
Hubs:Shimano Non-Series (FH-RS300 front / HB-T3000 rear)
Tires:Conti 29 x 2.6" (maxed out for this frame!) set up tubeless with
Orange Seal

Note: saddle, waterbottle cages, pedals, reflector triangle, trail bell and
any other accessories photographed are not included.

Pictures here <https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTwvvL5pCqVGJdQR7>. Shown with
82cm saddle height.

Price: $2k shipped in the lower 48. Other locations, please contact me.
Discount for SoCal (LA/OC/IE/SD) buyer since I won't have to pack and ship.

Want to buy or questions? Please email me off list.

Okay. I have Albatross bars on my Surly with.no flex. But the stem is
headless so I wonder if the tall Nitto stem is the main contributing
culprit. I don’t mind a little flex but this is too much.

I was thinking the Jim stem with the double bolt and uprise angle might
solve the problem. Thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Hillibikes are so close!

2022-07-29 Thread Daniel MacPherson

Hey Everyone,

I’m having issues with my handlebar set-up. I’m running Nitto Technomic
stem with Billie bars. The Billie bars are 25.4. The Nitto stem is 26.0.
I’m using a problem solvers shim to fit the bars properly.

Anyway, I get a lot of flex in the Billie bars when I apply any weight to
the bars. I’ve applied a lot of torque to the nut on the stem and it helps
a bit but doesn’t solve the issue. I’m worried it might be the headset;
however the headset appears tight and smooth. Have you guys experienced
similar issues? Thoughts?

Thanks,

Daniel MacPherson

[RBW] WTB: Large MUSA Shorts and/or Sackville Toursacks

2022-07-18 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I hesitated too long and missed out on the new MUSA black shorts. Does
anyone want to sell theirs - or any MUSA shorts in size large? I got a
pair of the new ranger green ones so ok on those.

Also, another thing I missed out on a while back the Sackville toursacks -
does anyone have a set they'd part with? Open to all stages of beausage.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Silver2 shifter apparently shift 12 speeds fine, even with SRAM rd

2022-07-13 Thread Daniel MacPherson
When my Silver1 shifter broke and I replaced it with a Suntour Barcon. I
was surprised by how easier it was to shift to the last cog on a 10 speed
cassette compared to the Silver1 shifter. My initial set-up with the
Silver1 shifter was with a Deore XT 10-speed derailleur. The last cog was
almost impossible to shift and sometimes didn't. I replaced the Deore Xt
with a Claris 9-speed derailleur and that fixed the problem. However, I had
to swing the Silver1 shifter all the way up to get to the last cog. It is
now easier with Suntour Barcon. I sometimes wonder why a bicycle company
hasn't come out with a modern version of the Suntour Barcon

Re: [RBW] Mechanical: Bent rapid rise derailer cage

2022-07-12 Thread Daniel MacPherson

Any sign of an accident? Maybe a bunch of scrapes along the pulley cage. If
it’s that bent you would expect some visible damage. But i would exhaust
all other options before trying to straighten the pulley cage. I’ve never
done it. It strikes me as very difficult to do it without damaging the rest
of the derailleur.

2022-07-10 Thread Daniel MacPherson

I agree with the sentiment that road bikes look better with calipers on
them. Though I find the long-reach caliper brakes (Tektro R559) to be
rather ugly looking. Road bikes with disc brakes or v-brakes still look odd
to me. I assume they must be gravel or cyclocross bikes. Maybe Rivendell
should develop some kick-ass long reach caliper brakes.

I once installed Tektro R559 brakes on a friends 27” to 700 road bike
conversion. She mentions to this day that she could never stop adequately
on that bike. Personally, I don’t understand bikes that need long reach
calipers. Either go canti/v-brake or disc brakes for these type of bikes.

Not many options for wide-rimmed tubeless compatible rims that can handle

V-brakes unfortunately. I had a QBP watchlist set-up between the
cliffhanger rim and the Velo Orange Voyager rim. QBP received 3 cliffhanger
rims one day in January and I snatched it up.

I’m having squealing issues as well with my kool stop pads. If it continues
I’ll put back the stock black Avid pads.

So far I love the feel of the bike (very comfy). It feels surprisingly

[RBW] WTT: Framesets! 59 Clem H for 64 Clem L

Possibly a long shot but I have a green Clem H with the swoopy seatstays,
size 59cm. I'd love to trade for a 64cm Clem L, especially in RBW blue or
mustard. I figured we keep our parts and just swap f/f/hs, each pay our own
shipping. Local (SoCal) would be even better!

Interested? Drop me a line!

[RBW] FS: Platypus (50cm) and Randonneur (63cm)

2022-01-31 Thread Daniel
Hi, all!
My friend (and former owner of my Clem H!) Gautam is selling a 50cm
Platypus:
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/bik/d/azusa-rivendell-platypus-50-cm-like-new/7440088017.html

It's stunning...the pictures do NOT do it justice! It's no secret these are
sold out and those who were fortunate to grab one love them! Please reach
out to him via his CL ad, but if you won't hear back (you will!), let me
know and I can nudge him.

While I'm posting, I'll make a shameless plug for J Bryant randonneur. It's
63cm, kitted out with all the right bits (Herse cranks, Edelux, Noodle
bars, Berthoud bag and Dura Ace 9s, etc.). It's also ready for a new
home:
https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/bik/d/yorba-linda-63cm-custom-randonneur/7416115606.html

Thank you for your time!

Best,

Daniel

2021-10-16 Thread Daniel Rooke
I missed my chance to order one of these and it's been bothering me ever
since. Does anyone have a 59cm or 62cm they'd part with? I'm willing to
pay a good price and flexible on whether it's a complete or only a frame
and fork. Also open to used condition as well. Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking advice - Sam Hillborne vs Atlantis

2021-06-10 Thread Daniel Searson
Thank you Jason -- I think you've just about convinced me that the Atlantis
is the way to go! You are right that it is a dream bike, there is something
so different about them as well compared to anything else out there. Good
point on the front wheel positioning, modern mountain geometry has
certainly gone for the longer TT / shorter stem combo for that reason as
well.

I'm a serial bike tinkerer (aren't we all??) so I'd probably be likely to
change to and from upright bars and back again anyway

And thanks for the photos Joe, that is a lovely Appaloosa as well!

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the welcome and for the detailed and thought out replies!
Your advice is much appreciated. It sounds like it would be a good idea to
talk with Rivendell directly, which I have been meaning to do as well. Its
good to also get some honest feedback from people with direct experience. I
think based on some of your replies I would be leaning towards the Sam
Hillborne, I certainly don't think I'd be disappointed.

Michael - the Appaloosa did cross my mind as well, thanks for the
suggestion. For some reason it doesn't resonate with me as much, perhaps
it's the lack of rainbow top tube! I think all the photos I've seen of them
are upright bar builds, so I can't really picture the frame with drop bars.

One thing I didn't mention is that I live in Australia, so Rivendells are
super rare here. In fact, I've only ever seen one in the flesh (a Platypus,
coincidentally). There is a bike shop here in Adelaide who have recently
started importing Rivendells which has got me thinking about all of this.

[RBW] Seeking advice - Sam Hillborne vs Atlantis

2021-06-08 Thread Daniel Searson

Hi everyone,

I'm glad I recently found this group, I am hoping you can help me out!

I am planning on ordering a Rivendell frameset in the near future (whenever
they are in stock, I am patient). I am just having a hard time deciding
what might be right for me between the Sam Hillborne and the Atlantis,
mainly on the geometry.

I would be using the bike for a half-hour commute on road / bike paths a
couple of times a week with panniers, and also for weekend rides of ~1-2
hours mostly on gravel roads. I want to build it up with drop bars and
something around ~45mm tyres.

My PBH is 91cm and my previous drop bar bikes have had a ~60cm top tube. I
am tall enough that I have never owned a road bike that is capable of
getting the bars level with the saddle, even with a riser stem! My hope for
a Rivendell is to set it up with drop bars that can actually be level with
the saddle, and to have a bike that will be with me for life.

I have always LOVED the look of the Atlantis, especially with the extra
rainbow top tube. The colour and the head badge are beautiful. For this
reason alone it would be my first choice, however… my concern is that in my
size (59 cm) the top tube length is 64cm which seems very long, like it
would be too long for drop bars. I get the feeling that maybe the “new”
Atlantis is more optimised for upright bars? Does anyone have recent
experience with drops on the Atlantis?

Sam Hillborne is a beautiful looking frame too (in orange). The geometry
seems to be more “standard” and it would fit my needs nicely. However I’m a
little confused on size, the geometry charts on the Riv website lead me to
believe there is a 58cm which would be my size, or possibly a 62cm which is
the next size up. The text on the Sam Hillborne page suggests there is a
60cm model as the biggest - have they recently updated the sizing and
geometry?

I think I really want the Atlantis but am hoping for reassurance on the
fit. Any light you can shed on this would be great!
Thanks
Daniel

[RBW] WTB: Rivendell Sackville Stickpack

2021-05-06 Thread Daniel Rooke

I posted this earlier this year but with an omission in the title that was
confusing. Thank you to those people who responded before with helpful
suggestions.

I'd like to see if anyone has one of the Sackville Stickpacks that
Rivendell made - maybe five years ago? - that they'd like to sell. I don't
have a fixed price in mind and am flexible on the condition.

If there's a big one of these hillibikes out there that you or your buddy

Open to either frame in any color, so long as it's an XL.

Strongly prefer frame and fork over a full build.

[RBW] Re: My new 26" wheeled drop bar Atlantis

2020-11-17 Thread Daniel M
Wow. I've been looking at my TRP levers and thinking they would be easy to
modify to long pull by doing exactly what you've done. I've been perfectly
happy with the Tektro RL 520, but the TRPs have a really nice shape so I
think this may be the route I take with my MB-1 that has been converted to
drop bars and is awaiting further conversion to V-brakes.

This is why I still read bike forums obsessively!

Re: [RBW] Re: Platform pedal recommendations

2020-11-05 Thread Daniel M
I have VP platforms on a number of bikes and like them for light use but would
never again use them for touring. The bearings that VP use are of a lower
quality than those used by MKS (I think it has to do with the outer being a
bushing with a plastic sleeve or something). Either way, I've had VP bearings
fail in the field, not quite catastrophically but really, really annoyingly,
and I've read reports of people who really liked the large platform of the
Catalyst pedal switch to something else because of bearing failure.

Whether it's the Sneaker Pedal or the Grip King or whatever it's called, you
can feel instantly that MKS uses a higher quality bearing. I've settled on the
platform pedals sold by Rene Herse:

https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/pedals/mks-allways-pedals/

I don't mean to identify with a particular brand or bash another, but riding
unsupported in Death Valley for days with a wobbling pedal is not something I
wish to repeat.

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-19 Thread Daniel M
Piling on in favor of your building your own wheel. I bought Jobst Brandt's
book and read it cover to cover twice before building my own wheel. The first
half of the book is theory, the second is practice. You could easily skip
straight to the instructions, and if you follow them carefully you will end up
with a properly laced and tensioned wheel. Only drawback is that Jobst doesn't
reply to email anymore...

I've now built six wheels: 2 dyno, 3 Rohloff, and one fixed, so nothing with
extreme dish. I have beaten the first four of those to hell off road, touring,
and off-road touring. It's been a great experience. I did buy a used truing
stand, dishing tool, tensiometer and spoke wrenches from a mechanic before I
started, but I could just as easily do it in the frame of a bike with a guitar
pick. Anything you build carefully is likely to be better than a factory-built
wheel that hasn't been touched up by a professional, which people buy and ride
all the time.

You won't regret it!

[RBW] Re: V-Brake and Canti...

2020-10-18 Thread Daniel M
I will also throw out there that finding a long-pull lever you can live with is
a preferable solution than Travel Agents. I'd sooner go with a short-arm
V-brake than use a Travel Agent, but there are significant benefits to
long-pull brakes, both rim and mechanical disc, in that the cable is under less
tension so the cable stretches less and the housing compresses less as a
result.

2020-10-17 Thread Daniel M
If you're getting shudder with a V-brake then I suspect you're just as likely,
if not more, to get it with cantis, because as the fork flexes, the distance
between the cable hanger and the brake itself changes, which leads to a
feedback loop of exacerbated shudder.

I'm a loudmouth V-brake evangelist, but if you've already gone to the trouble
of a long-pull setup, I think you will find cantis a downgrade.

Do you have a particularly flexible fork, BTW?

I believe Grant is also working on a V-brake and I will certainly buy a set the

2020-08-19 Thread Daniel
I'm selling my 61cm Bleriot which is set up as a fast all arounder. It's a
beautiful bike and a lovely build. For my PBH (91cm), I have more than the
requisite fistful of seatpost, but the fit works for me. There are some
signs of wear on the frame, but not dents or areas I'm worried about. It's
interesting to note that the write up in RR37 makes mention of fitting 46mm
Golden Boy knobbies and recent experiments (not mine) have fit the 47mm
WTBs and 48mm Rene Herse tires.

[RBW] Re: Going from Sam (60cm to New Atlantis (59cm) - asking the unaskable: how will the New Atlantis feel?

2020-05-28 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I have a 61 Sam and ordered a 62 Atlantis two weeks ago. I am curious on
the ride differences as well. My buddy that owns an Atlantis swears by the
bike and I am building out the bike in a similar fashion as the Sam except
for 700/36 XT/Atlas wheels by Rich and a quill stem mount shifter to try
out something different than bar end shifters. I'm looking forward to
having a mirror hanging off the end of my bar.

[RBW] FS/FT: Shimano, Acorn, Rock Shox, Campy, Rapid Rise!

2020-04-23 Thread Daniel
I hope you’re all well. Among other projects during quarantine, I’ve taken
this time to clean out the spare parts bins “a bit." (This is not
everything...DOH!). I posted this to iBOB earlier in the week, so if you've
seen it there, it's unchanged except for minor edits (mostly removing sold
items). As a Bleriot owner, I figured I should post to this list, too. :-)

Everything is in this album (https://photos.app.goo.gl/hGrXPEvfLstQFhB48)
<https://photos.app.goo.gl/hGrXPEvfLstQFhB48>, but I tried to make a
separate album for most items to help avoid confusion.

Prices below are before shipping, unless otherwise noted. I tried to price
these fairly but I also a little willy nilly about it, so if I'm off base,
make me an offer!

For the most part, I'd like to ship with USPS Flat Rate because it's
insured and trackable. I have boxes on hand for that. But I also have other
boxes on hand and am happy to use those as needed. Or socially-distanced,
masked pickup is OK for the locals in Orange County, CA.

Trade-wise, I could use some supple tires with tan sidewalls in 700c x
32mm, 700C x 35mm, 650B x 38mm, 650B x 42mm. Non-bike related items of
trade interest for me are a microKORG, guitar pedals, Lollar Dirty Blonde
pickups, Strat baseball neck and a nicer manual coffee grinder.

Thanks!

[RBW] Pedal Strikes when Turning

2020-04-15 Thread Daniel M
I had an early orange Waterford canti-braked single top tube Hillborne in the
early 2010s. The tradeoff of the stable high-speed handling was that the bike
needed to be leaned really far to make a quick tight turn. The combination of
this, the low bottom bracket, and my love of pedaling through turns meant I got
A LOT of pedal strike. The most of any bike I've owned. And this was with
either 165 or 167.5mm cranks (can't remember which).

This is not to disparage the bike at all, rather to simply state that my
example was not a good candidate for pedaling through tight turns.

[RBW] Re: In Praise of the Roadini

2020-04-13 Thread Daniel D.
That's what I told a lady espousing you're only supposed to walk for exercise
not ride your bike. Besides explaining biking is allowed. I also shared my
theory of biking being better...

People are bad at self distancing. I still see some congregated at crosswalks
or entranceways etc. Because that's their usual habit. But they're not used
to walking up to a bicyclist in the road :p

[RBW] Have an idea for my stash of unused camera film

2020-04-01 Thread Daniel D.
Awhile back because of Grant etc. Thought about getting into film cameras.
Grabbed a deal on b/w film . Wary of hobby creep and expense of developing i
shelved the idea. But still have the film in my fridge, expired date last
year. Someone's covid camera sale reminded me about that film.

Came up with an idea for my stash of film. Send film out to people on here and
maybe ibob. Request in return, AT LEAST one photo from the pictures you take
using the film. What do you guys think of my idea? If i decide to do it I'll
start a new thread (s)
