[RBW] WTB drop bar roady riv.
Hello rivsters. Im looking for a used Rivendell road bike in 54/55 cm. I test rode a roadini size 50 and it was very nice but too long in the chainstays for my tastes. Newer geometry beyond that model is too long to also use drop bars, for my proportions. Roadeo 55cm would be ideal, other older models could work. Looking to buy FFH or complete in order of preference: Send offers direct if possible to keep the list clutter low. Steven, I am interested in this bike, but unsure about clicking links. Can you email photos directly to me or post a few here for others to see as well.JLOn Feb 1, 2024, at 3:02 PM, 'Steven Seelig' via RBW Owners Bunch wrote:Sad to part with this Classic Blue version, but have finally realized that I should ride a 56cm. And it just so happens that another customer of my LBS HappyGo Bikes in Washington, DC was moving on from hers. So trading the blue for a dark green. Photos should be accessible via the link below. Amazingly, just a fews fleck scratches - the color still pops. Set up as an upright with Mostache steel bars and bar end Shimano shifters. Components are basically what came with the bike, Shimano headset, 105 hubs, 105 front derailleur. Newer Deore derailleur that replaced the short cage 105, which I still have if your would rather. Pedals are meh - I could be convinced to offer SKS Sneaker pedals if requested. Carved Brooks Flyer saddle included. Offered for $1900. [RBW] WTB 53 or 55 roadeo
Hello all, Anyone wanting to send their roadeo (size 53 or 55cm) back into the wild? I’m looking for a straight forward road bike and that could fit just perfectly. I have an orange 54cm QB that I might be convinced to trade. Please send offers or questions offlist to minimize the message clutter. Thanks! Re: [RBW] Re: Feeler: ISO extra-small 26er?
While all the bikes OP listed are great vehicles, none of them fit the brief. If the brief is “Lighter, more roadish, with drop bars…” for someone 5’ in height, I would look for used Georgina Terry bikes. Terry is an accomplished and innovative bicycle designer and frame builder. She builds custom bicycles now and has offered many production models in the past. Many of her designs utilize two different wheel sizes (24” front, 700c rear) to allow for the top tube length and stand over height to match the needs of short stature riders. She also offered bicycles with 650c (571) and later, 26” (559) wheels. Her 26” (559) bikes tend to be designed around Rene Herse Elk Pass 26x1.25 tires. The flea bay has beautiful blue Waterford built Terry Gale Force road frame for 559 wheels. I messages OP directly with this suggestion. Another used bicycle option is searching for 650c bikes. We know from list member Patrick M. that 571x23 and 559x32 work on the same frames. Elk Pass tires tend to run a little narrow at 29-30mm so width is usually not an issue either. A discerning eye can separate the old time trial bikes from the small wheel road bicycles. Also on the flea bay is a nice steel Davidson, though the top tube might be too long for this use. There are many current options using this 650c route on the bay, including a super inexpensive Terry size 50x50cm square. Which is too large for OP’s spouse but would be a nice bike for someone in the 5’2” range. Re: [RBW] Re: 3-speeding Quickbeams and SimpleOnes
Strumy Archer makes a 120 OLD version of their X-RF8 8 speed internal hub. It is a modern style hub with a rotary switch rather than the chain actuated gear shift. On Jun 20, 2023, at 9:50 AM, Arthur Mayfield wrote:I don’t know what the rear spacing is on the Quickbeams and Simple One, but my Frank Jones Sr has 120mm track dropouts. Finding a modern manufacture IGH with 120mm OLD has been a lost cause for me (and I build my own wheels). I’m sure if I pored over the possibles long and diligently enough, I’d run across one or a vintage AW, but it simply becomes easier to hop on another bike when I need the gears. I’d like to build a 3 spd wheel for my FJ, though. One clear advantage of IGH over other multi-gear options on single speed bikes that I haven’t seen mentioned is the ease of riding with “good” fenders. I’ve tried using a flip-flop on my FJ with full coverage, aluminum fenders, and it’s not only a pita to do on the road (as well as time-consuming), but the rear fender could never be set up to fit properly to my standards. An IGH would make that a non-issue, at least until there’s a flat. Removing wheels from bikes rigged with chain tensioners on track dropouts “in the wild” for flats or other maintenance presents yet another nest of problems, with or without fenders. Overall, I’d be happier with a nice IGH. I could even get down to one bike On Monday, June 19, 2023 at 2:30:13 PM UTC-4 Patrick Moore wrote:In defense of the old 3 speed igh, the drag, at least for the old SA AW, has been tested at considerably less than that of much more complex, multi-epicycle internal gear trains with 7+ gears, and my experience (considerable with 2 and 3 speed SA hubs, only a little, but some with modern 7+ gear hubs) bears this out very clearly. IMO, the simplicity and low drag (and lower weight) of the simpler multigear hubs makes them preferable, at least to me, to the more complex, draggier, and heavier ones.I have a QR 17/19 Dingle wheel on my Riv 1999 fixed gear road custom and switching from the 76" to a 68" headwind gear is very easy, but I noticed that I downshifted much more often and readily with the 2 speed TC hub (76" direct and 66" underdrive), helpful when your direction into the wind or the slope of the terrain changes often. My point is not that you ("all y'all") should go get a TC -- last made in the 1940s? Mine is 1937 -- but that igh's do offer some benefits over manual "get off the bike and move the chain" shifting. Personally, I perfer the external simplicity of a simple igh over multiple cogs or rings, and I prefer multiple cogs over multiple rings, again for simplicity and ease of use. AAYMMAWV.I get back to that downgeared AW Schwinn: 69", 52", 39" which for a $50-total-expenditure beater including new 36 t chainring + shop labor (1989) proved to be very versatile indeed. On Mon, Jun 19, 2023 at 10:32 AM Drew Saunderswrote:My orange Quickbeam came set up as a "2 speed" with 32-40-chainguard chainrings on a 74/110 triple (still has those) plus an 18t freewheel.I immediately made it a "3 speed" with a 17/19 Dos Eno freewheel. The chain is too slack for the 32/17 to work, so only 3 options: 40/17 (99% of my riding), 40/19, 32/19.I later added a 22T freewheel to the flip side of the flip/flop hub, which will work with the 32, but not the 40, so I have an extremely inconvenient 4-speed.I rarely take it out of the 40/17, but the headwinds this morning made me wonder if I should have used the 40/19.All of that was much cheaper and easier than getting an internally geared hub, and if I did go for an IGH, I'd get a modern 7 or 8 speed anyway. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Basket shop sack Brompton bags
All, Back forever ago when I first mounted a front basket to my Saluki, then CB-0 (x4), then… well basically every bike I have had was improved by adding an easy access front bag inside a basket. I still have a wald medium with green shopsack in it. Is there a Brompton bag that replicates this? Do I need to get a custom rack made and zip tie a basket to it? Anyone want to earn some money modifying a rack to allow a bolted on front carrier block catch? Goal - fit a full size grocery bag, full of odd shaped stuff that make the sides stick out here and there, into a bike mounted object. What are my options? What everyone else said. Here is another link that shows how one might install such a strap hanging rod: https://youtu.be/vfQe4f0jbZs One important note, plan for a way to keep the backpack strap from easily sliding off either sode of the dowel. Crutch or walker bump stop? Shower curtain tension rod bump stop? *question for anyone who has used this setup. Would this work easily with a “mini rack” or does the full size Brompton rack need to be in place to support the backpack. Designers, knowledgeable folks, In examples where total bicycle color looks good, WHY does it look good? What elements of color theory and design are behind it? Re: [RBW] Bring Out The Brompton!
Dom, Wider tire? Give me a month for a ride report :) The largest tire made for 349 rims is the 349X1 1/2. They work out to be about 38-40mm in practice. That fits the fork on all models and the rear frame on many, but not all. Ti models are a little tighter. The real pinch point is the rear brake caliper. Greenspeed in AUS used to make a model called Scorcher. A little internet searching will direct you to these tires used on Bromptons, including a blog from a store in Japan from a few years back. Greenspeed is no longer, but you can still get 60tpi or 120tpi scorchers from a recumbent shop in Australia. They also have their own house brand in the same size called TRUBLU. [RBW] FS Phil Wood F/Fr track hubs
Hello group, Anyone have a single speed project want some hew high bling hubs? I have a set if silver 32h phil wood track hubs, flip flop fixed/free 120/100 spacing with the phil wood lock ring up for grabs. Phil Wood must be in between production runs because they are sold out on these and have been for a while. Bonus positive about these is that the hubs have no drop out rests so when one removes the bolts wheels built with phil wood track hubs can drop out straight down. This allows for a single speed / fixed drive train with perfect fender line. I think that is a huge upgrade. $400 obo shipped inside usa. Will, I expect you are going to get many of the same responses so i’ll keep mine brief. 1) The PBH listings are guidelines. 82pbh should be fine on that bike. 2) Call Riv HQ and talk to them about your size concerns they are great to talk to. 3) We are all built different and yet 82cm PBH at 5’11” seems quite short in the legs. From what I gather Patrick has a full life outside of this list and made the choice to stop participating, not out if spite or due to ill will of others. Re: [RBW] Sellers, post your full emails
This IS a topic that comes up frequently and it has me looking at my own use case. I am an email exclusive user and here are some thoughts on why that is. I came to this group as an extension of another group that used to function as a listserv. I have just kept up with that email to post format. I use a mail client, a program that collects and sorts my email from multiple email addresses. To read and send email I launch the program and do what I need to do. That is to say I do not get email by directing a web browser to www.yahoo or www.gmail or whatever. I imagine that if I did read email on a web browser there are only a few more steps to access google groups (with a gmail address), as I do not, it seems like very many steps. I have more than one email address. I bet I have more than a score of email addresses. Not only does my mail client sort mail in many ways, I also have several accounts that I can interact with or ignore as I see fit. I can imagine a few reasons that others may not want multiple addresses (even work and personal) and there is some learning and time involved in setting up a mail client. IMHO the culture of this list is one of active discussion topics. A topic typically lasts a few days to a few weeks. Others have expressed an interest in search and browse functions when framing google groups as a forum. I check the group emails every few days and read or share my opinion. If I miss a topic I don’t mind so much because it is likely the group has moved on so to speak. I can certainly imagine someone new to the group being excited about old and new topics equally. A forum style interface allows for access to that that wider array of posts. Jason -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill
Tom, If you want the aesthetic of a quill stem the best and safest way to achieve that is to replace the fork with a threaded one, and a threaded headset. There are other ways to use a quill stem or get a threaded steerer but they all come with cost, difficulty, and various levels of safety concerns. If you truly just want higher bars there are many threadless stems that will get you there. There is another thing to suggest as well. Have you considered trying to trade for a size bigger? A larger frame will put the bars higher relative to the saddle. Ive witnesses a dozen or so swaps like that happen. Re: [RBW] Re: Are there different sizes of 1" threaded headset?
Just to swing it over to Rivendell. The Legolas from 10+ years ago and the Rodeo had always been a available in 1 inch threadless options. It is a good way for those bicycle models to have compatibility with “modern” components and aesthetic. Threadless stems in 1 inch and 1 1/8 inch fit with only a commonly found shim needed. As we all know Rivendell has their own fork crowns cast and typically use 1inch threaded steerers. A 1 inch threadless steerer fits the same crown making it an easy swap when placing orders with the builder. That is a common reason other makers have used 1 inch threadless steerers, they fit the same for crowns and head tubes as 1 inch threaded. They are also independent of threading standards (french, raleigh, english, etc) so eplacement forks with different properties (rake, or braze ons for example) can be made and are modular. Some “popularity” is also due to aesthetics. Some want stems that have a removable faceplate, more commonly used on threadless, so they opt for that style steerer. To answer the OP question, there are many different sizes of 1 inch headsets. Threaded and threadless both come in two different crown race sizes. Beyond that, there are differences in bearings, stack height, and thread style that need to be considered. Ann, I think the bolt fix you did a year ago is keen! Thank you for posting about this. If I have to do a seat post bolt repair in the wild I will know to look for a high grade bolt. Sorry yours only worked for a year, glad to hear you were not hurt. A B67 has all kinds of leverage from three sides and built in kinetic spring energy. Re: [RBW] Re: Rene Herse Fender Install for QB
Patrick, First off, great to hear that they did a good job. I’m sure others will have suggestions here. Without seeing the bike it is hard to say. My intuition tells me it is in the right place to - A: ward off spray coming off the top of the wheel. There can still be significant material leaving the wheel between 12 and 2 oclock, as well as traveling up the inside of the fender. Add in forward momentum and both can and up hitting the rider. and B: prevent the fender from catching on curbs, rocks, roots, etc when the front wheel drops down past them. Your fender may, or may not need the additional stay in the front, or attachment to a rack if you use one. You might consider adding a long flexible mudflap onto the bottom of the fender if you desire more coverage there. A flexible flap would not undo the work of A or B. Best of luck! Re: [RBW] Tell me about WTC extra long b screws
Conway, I don’t know anything specific about the WTC extra long B screw but I have often installed a B screw from the bottom up. The head of the screw sticks out and can catch that b screw shelf. I just guess at the length needed and this often involves pulling the RD off the bike in order to install the screw. Trial and error + a measurement ahead of time (x was too short so It should stick out more that x) makes this a quick, but not immediate fix. Hope that helps. [RBW] Silver shifter upkeep
Hello everyone, I have had a few sets of silver shifter #1. Every now and then one of them has excessive play in the internals. Thicker washers don't help. Tightening it doesn't help. Does anyone have a trick for these to help adjust the tolerance? It feels as if the internals are clamped tight but the level body can still be wiggled side to aide with the slightest touch. Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: 66 or 68cm Quickbeam frame set
All of these failures are unfortunate. There is something about the QB though. Anyone have a 54 hanging around that needs a home? BB intact please! :) I keep trying to build up a single speed with 650bx48 road tires and similar sized tiny knobs. It keeps getting pushed to the back of the build list though. Re: [RBW] Re: Silver2 shifters have arrived!
Dynasys / 11s / etc My experience tells me these levers will not pair well with a Dynasys or 11s RD. In fact, I think the Silver 1 shifters probably offer better adjustability when used as downtube shifters. I use those older style silvers to friction shift a 10s rear cluster on one bike and the levels require a comically light touch to shift. They shift great but I feel like I’m stirring a my tea with a tiny spoon. (This is a fun thing and makes me smile every time. Remember bike riding was fun?!) Fear not - months back on the riv blog they posted a bike hike to effectively increase the diameter of the level pully. They describe clamping a small plastic tube on the cable just where it exits the lever. Try this with the Silver2 shifter! The bike hack is a thing that anyone can do with hand tools. Side note - those mismatched levers that VO sells are also jarring to me. I like a mix of symmetry and wabi sabi on my bikes but that one big level one small lever looks off. Someone could pay a machinist to build a matching left hand / front lever and end up with a visually matching set. Couldn’t they? Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen 65cm (MUSA), f//f/h
I stand corrected. Thanks Christian! :) For added context I prefer to ride a bike with as little stand over clearance as possible, sometimes negative clearance. Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen 65cm (MUSA), f//f/h
John G wrote “ PBH, or saddle height?” Thanks for the clarifying question. This bike should fit someone with an 87-90 PBH. I say this estimate based on experience and knowledge of the fit for Rivendell bikes on this era. I’m sure there is a geometry chart someplace as well. A person outside of that size range may find a way to fit it and enjoy the ride as well. IIRC The AHH was made as large as a (rare) 72cm frame. So this big bike isn’t even the biggest. That said, other factors influence fit, shoe choice, flexibility, aesthetics, etc. just to name a variety. This particular bike is about 10cm too big for me, ha!, but there might be some tall folks who want a nice riding road bike with room for big tires and classic looks. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam angled dropouts - first principles?
One thing that I never understood about the design Riv ended up with is compensating for the variable angles as a result of the wheel change. It appears with their angled dropout* design a wheel closer to the seat tube steepens the ST and HT angle while a wheel farther away from the seat tube would slacken them. I road a QB for a while and regretfully sold it. It was a great bike. I didn't slide the wheel though *all dropouts obviously had a measurement of their angle. Thanks Joe, That was my thinking too. Looks like the Billie is in between in terms of rise. Billie is also wider... because the handles go back further? Hello rivsters, I have been looking for a new upright bar. I love love love albatross bars with the handles angled down about 10° - that is the end of the bars point toward the rear hub. [RBW] WTborrow 650b wheelset
Does anyone have a spare/ storage 650b wheelset laying around? Maybe some cracked synergies or a zac19 set that you don't trust mounting tires on? I need to do a trial fit on a conversion for brake reach and fender placement and want to borrow a set of 650b wheels with tires (38-42mm) for a couple weeks. The bike is 126mm spacing so I would rather limit the wheelset to 130 or smaller spaced hub. The bike will have no rider and no crank setup this is just to test fit, that is why an "unsafe" wheelset would work just fine. 650b may not work with the brakes so I am trying to avoid purchasing anything without a fit first. (A plan for the bike build is much farther down the road). I can come pick up in the general SF bay area. Re: [RBW] Fenders and Rams
Ryan Some have installed longboards, or SKS fenders on their Ram but there are also many who were successful in installing metal fenders. There are a couple things one can do to improve the clearance for fenders. What brakes do you have? The stock Shimano brakes are nice at stopping but the Tektro 539s are a good upgrade because of how they are shaped. There more clearance in both caliper width (wider tire can be installed without deflating) and fender clearance. The second thing to try - if I understand correctly what you meant by mount the good way is to shorten the daruma bolt (a file used like a saw works well) then drill the mounting hole a little wider in order to use a recessed brake bolt in place of the nut. I worked with this same issue on my own Ram. I am very pleased with the Tektro brakes and although I got fenders to fit on the bike I never ride with them.
