And it works, well. Very well.

Kinda weird, running a lighter tire combo on this bike; I'm used to Conti

Will run w/ this combo for a few weeks, think on it awhile, before I
switch to the Rumpkins (I've pulled the Tour Rides off of my wheels and
mounted the Rumkins, but haven't tried them yet, since I adjusted the
brakes for 700c instead of 650b now...).

Re: [RBW] OT: Thoughts on this Fixie?

2013-04-16 Thread Jim Mather
It's hard to assess anything without a picture. Miele is a Canadian company
founded by an Italian in the early '80s. Their early bikes were road racers
and sport tourers, made with varying grades of Columbus tubing, and are
probably worth $100 if in good condition. Though if it has a Columbus Aelle
main triangle and cheaper steel stays, I'd say its not worth $100. Later
they started making a much wider variety of bikes. I think any steel frame
can be good at 20 years old if it was taken care of. How you determine that
fact is, of course, another matter.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a fixie and then this pops up at a price I

Would this be $100 lost? Is a Miele frame quality enough to be good at
15-20+ years old? I've written the owner asking about clearance for larger
tires and condition/age of the frame.

 With abandon,
 Patrick

Re: [RBW] OT-Cool Lugged bike for 7 year old (has to be girly)

2013-04-15 Thread Jim Mather
How tall is she? I would think that would be the limiting factor. There are
road racing bikes with 24 wheels, both new (mostly aluminum but even some
cf) and vintage steel with lugs. I don't know how easy it would be to find
a vintage one, but if you queried the Classics Rendezvous list, you'd
probably turn up something. I think Joe Bunik on this list has one hanging
in his garage, along with a bunch of other project frames that will
probably never get built (just kidding Joe).

My daughter studies French and wanted a French bike, so I found a lugged
steel Peugeot mixte in purple. Polished it up, replaced the heavy steel 27
wheels with alloy 700's, replaced the junky Simplex with Shimano, added
Nitto Dove bars, and voila, a classy purple get-around town bike. That was
when she was about 11, and a bit under 5' tall.

pointing out why Zuk is right (or probably right). Anyone who thinks the

I use long-fingered unpadded gloves when I mountain bike. The lack of

Here are some inexpensive ones at Jenson currently:

Re: [RBW] Front Rack ideas

Many of the Wald baskets will bolt to dropouts and mount to the handlebars
at the top so you don't need a rack:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dsportingfield-keywords=wald%20basketsprefix=wald%2Bbas%2Csportingrh=n:3375251%2Ck%3Awald%20basket

I can't answer your specific questions, but my concern about Blackburn is
that they call it a mountain rack, so it may be designed for 26 wheels.
It's too bad they don't give the leg measurements.

about him when I toured the Pointer Brand factory in Bristol, VA--when i was

talked about posters. He and Dave were talking, and I/Dave too THOUGHT we
were clear about what we wanted---INFO-graphical posters that told the story
of the bike via symbols, graphs, pie charts.

We were to pay him about $4,500---I think that was the figure--for six or
seven posters, with a KILL FEE of $1,000. A kill fee is what the artist gets
if the project goes south for any reason. In our case, the posters were
taking a direction we didn't expect and that didn't seem to be
info-graphical. So we nipped it in the bud, so we thought, paid the kill
fee, and that should have been it.

It it is suprising to find that the posters continued. I don't know what to
think about it, really. It never occured to us that it would go this way. I
like to control any-and-all impressions of Rivendell, because there's a
certain style that I want associated with us and the bikes and all. But I
don't think we can stop anybody from doing that, legally---and if we could,
I wouldn't bother or go to the expense. It would be so unpleasant, almost
mean, and we have our hands full already. Plus it's not like Dan Blackman is
the enemy, either. I wish he hadn't, but he did, and I hope he makes a
little money off them and then they sort of fade away.

The Renovelo offered now started as a Rambouillet, which is pretty
different from a Hunq. The size is fairly similar, 60cm top tube/88cm

Hunq takes a much wider tire and canti brakes. If you can live with
35mm tires, it's a great deal.

Lime Ridge was quite rideable yesterday, with a few muddy spots. After
another day of sun today, trail conditions should be perfect tomorrow.
Currently 47F in Walnut Creek and 34F up on Diablo, so you may want to

I don't know, living and riding in SF, both commuting and recreational, you
don't see alot of those kind of bikes being ridden around, especially the
dutch ones. Still, even they all do have one feature that can get them up
the hill - a front der to allow more than a single speed crank.

I work in SF Financial District, and I see plenty of those bikes along
the Embarcadero, and riding up and down Market. And you need to take a
closer look -- none of the Public Bikes are offered with a front
derailer, and the same goes for the Dutch bikes and the Pake C'mute.
There is plenty of market for non-front derailer'ed bikes even in SF.

What about the bullmoose are you trying to approximate? To me, the
bullmoose offers a very solid, non-flexing handlebar (I'm saying that
as a positive), and it's very hard to duplicate that with a bar/stem.
The newer ones from Riv came in 150mm and 200mm; older bullmoose came
in many varieties. I believe the DD only comes in 80mm and 100mm, so
you're not getting anywhere near the extension of a bullmoose. You can
get a pretty rigid bar if you go to the 31.8 size, which I have on my
bikes that don't have a bullmoose, but that usually doesn't fit the
Riv esthetic. If you're just looking for a flat bar/stem combo, what
you're proposing is fine. As to whether you should get longer or
shorter extension, that depends on what fit you are comfortable with.
A longer quill length obviously gives you more height adjustability,
but I can't tell if that's what you need.
