Re: [RBW] Re: Huge Rosco Mixte

2017-10-03 Thread Kai Vierstra
Nice. I have the Big One's (what they were before being rebranded as G) mounted
tubeless on velocity cliffhangers, and I love them. I pump them up to about 30
psi, but after not enough minutes of city riding they seem to leak/heal enough
to settle in around 20 psi. As they're so thin and lovely, I'm on my 2nd set.
I've got some Thunder Burts headed my way for the Rosco, looking forward to
comparison rolling between the two.
Excited for our bikes!

Absolutely true, but Ryan probably should've been harsher on those photos.
They're really really really bad (specifically that overall shot). And if

tube length at the very least. That said, I made extra money to help with

Maybe a silly question, but does the pump peg still function as a pump peg with
the cable routing through it? If no, maybe best to use a hacksaw and file to
rechristen it vestigial nub?
I'm really impressed with the drill job, I'd just worry about unnecessary

[RBW] Big bike in Salt Lake City? -WTB

2017-07-13 Thread Kai Vierstra
Hello Utah and Utah affiliates!
I'm flying with the family to spend 2 weeks at my mother-in-law's place in Salt
Lake. I was wondering if you or anyone you know in and around the Wasatch Front
has a big bike for sale. I need my 65 Clem and 68 Quickbeam to stay home in NYC
but I was hoping to find a fun bike I could stash in the garage, nothing fancy,
unless it's well worn fancy that could be had fairly cheap.
Perfect would be a mountain capable steel bike with good enough clearances,
2"-2.25", with a nice long top tube, 24"+, but I'm open to any possibility in
64cm-72cm.
Thanks

[RBW] Dyno wiring

2017-05-19 Thread Kai Vierstra
I no longer have a Sam but I do have dyno lights mounted in various ways. One
thing I think I know, which goes against many examples seen here, is that it's
better to keep wires on the interior of the bike as opposed to wrapping. People
wrap to avoid cutting to length and I get that, not wanting to cut off anything
I might need later, but wrapping exposes so many points along a wires length to
easy failure from bumps and the various pitfalls out there. Anything that can
chip a good paint job can probably cause a problem for thin copper wire. I use
gaffes tape to anchor points along the wire run and it probably looks horrific
to many here, but it works great. To save the length I double it back on itself
for however long it needs.
There was a lot of talk about helicopter tape on a recent thread, and that
sounds smart.
And one last thought regarding the exterior coil method, doesn't wrapping a
conductor with energized wire create a magnetic field?, could be picking up
weight via ferrous road dust...

[RBW] Orange Hubbuhubbah WOW!

2017-05-10 Thread Kai Vierstra
I'm excited to see all these tandems rolling about, I wish there was a reverse
angle xxl to medium so I could stoke my captain/wife on one (she's not stoked
on the concept of stoking).
As for fixed angles on the bars, I've said it on the forum before, but I think
the moosed bars solve more problems than they create, especially for people who
are really really fussy about their bar angles. It clears the way for "just
ride"ing, no hand wringing required. Besides, if one can wring their hands it
suggests that they still have lateral play in their wrists, which enables them
to settle into those bars and enjoy the ride.
Enjoy

I've got them on my Clem and I think they're great bars, but as folks have

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Kai Vierstra
I have Riv silver down tube shifters mounted on my Clem's standard issue
shifter mounts. I think they're great! Mostly for the fact that the mount
rotates, but they seem to hold well enough. And since they're already on your
bike it would be an infinitely cheaper option than Paul's or the IRD mounts if
you decide to swap out the shifters.

Depending on how high you want your bars, the choco-moose might be just the

[RBW] WTB Mark's Rack or other small rack solution to fit Joe Appaloosa

2017-01-03 Thread Kai Vierstra
There's been talk of rear racks playing nice with the top of the fork mounts on
a Appaloosa fork. The larger footprint of a light/inexpensive rear rack would
be nice for basket mounting. And as you probably wouldn't want to load too much
up high in the front, so you wouldn't need anything expedition ready (unless
you used on of those beautiful integrated nitto racks with the removable low
riders, but those are $$$, but you'd be expedition ready)

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread Kai Vierstra
I use the tubus clamps Patrick posted, they're perfect.
I wanted to clarify my opinions on balanced loads and wiggly frames, when I say
balanced load on front lowriders, I mean side to side, not back to front. I'm
happier with all the weight on the front as low as it'll go, leaving the back
clear of any substantial load. I had an incident with some breakage earlier
this year which I at least partially credit to having a rear load on a, in this
case, quickbeam, and how that flexed the frame. I know that I'm a rear load for
the most part, but a dynamic as opposed to static one. So, for me it's static
and dynamo up front, dynamic in the back.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam: A Three Year Retrospective

2016-12-18 Thread Kai Vierstra
I used to have the 40x32 up front with a 16x19 in back, and on my
Brooklyn/Westchester/Brooklyn commute I switched out of 40x16 once, promptly
switching back. So I ditched the 32 and have an unused 19 on my W.I. Dos
freewheel. So, in my experience pedaling the Quickbeam around NYC, having too
many options just complicated things. You'll be surprised what you can do with
the single speed on a climb, not being able to shift/second guess where you're
at, just pedaling, purely.

[RBW] Re: Albastache on what frame?

2016-12-11 Thread Kai Vierstra
Albastaches are great!, I had them on my Quickbeam with an 80 or 90mm stem. I
recently switched over to some bullmoose bars, mostly to have the triangle to
run a cable through when I lock up in the city, but they're great too ('staches
were better for climbing).
As for interrupters, If only they were steel/posable, they don't play well on
curves as designed, but you knew that.
Enjoy

[RBW] Re: FS ::: Mountain Bike Brake Levers, Suntour & Sachs - NEW

2016-11-23 Thread Kai Vierstra
Is there any reach adjustability on the Dia-Compe levers? I'm currently using
the ugliest Avids ever, but they've got adjustable cable pull and adjustable
reach, but carry the terrible price of horrifically gross looking.
I'm still dreaming of a lever that has adjustable angle/pitch to the bar, that

side too much, but I think that's a pipe dream.

[RBW] Re: What is this and how do I get it off my stem?

This will sound overly fussy, but if you track down some fine bronze wool
there's no threat of rubbing any ferrous deposits into your lovely aluminium
stem. Not sure if it really happens to aluminum, but bronze will "rust" if
rubbed with steel wool. Anyhows, I assume the discoloration on the stem is
caused by rust from the close proximity of the stem and steer tube, so yeah,
this sounds overly fussy.
