Re: [RBW] Re: Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2023-02-16 Thread Leslie
That was exactly what I spec'd it as, since they were kinda semi-custom, I
wanted the Ram orange on it.(My Ram is a green one, but then I later
found a tall Ram frame for my son, so we've got two Ram orange bikes and
then my canti-Rom is that light silverish blue color.)

[RBW] Re: 650b or 700 Bombadil frame question

2023-02-16 Thread Leslie
I've cantis on the canti-Rom, Motolites on the Bomba, like 'em both. Have
to admit: I'm running 700-40 MSO's on the Rom, and I have to deflate to
get that fat tire into the cantis on that frame (I'm running a tire
seriously over what is spec'd on it). The Motolites are easier to get
really fat tires in and out of

[RBW] Re: 650b or 700 Bombadil frame question

2023-02-15 Thread Leslie
I built up my 56 Bomba w/ NeoMotos originally; then I swapped and was
running my Ram's 700c wheelset (I am using Motolite brakes, so I could
slide the pads up to fit the 700c wheel). I did go back to 650b on the
Bomba, built a 650b wheelset for the Ram (and am running the 700c wheelset
on the canti-Rom... )

It's crazy what all you can do w/ these

Re: [RBW] Re: Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2023-02-15 Thread Leslie
I'd originally put a deposit down on a normal Bomba (56, a 650b); then
they started talking about the diaga-Bomba, and I called in, paid the diff,
upgraded to it instead.

When I first built up my Bomba, I was running 2.4 NeoMotos on it (under
fenders).I then tried out swapping to my 700c wheelset off my Ram
(ended up converting the Ram to 650b).
Later went to non-knobbies, then robbed that cockpit for my son's Ram.

[RBW] Re: Biking from Foster City to?..

2022-08-09 Thread Leslie Tierstein
Years ago, my company had an office in Foster City and then in San Mateo. I
kept a bike there for use when I visited. (Telecommuting before it was
fashionable.) I mostly did commuting and running errands, so I might not be
so helpful in avoiding busy streets. (For fun, it's worth seeing the
mansions in Burlingame and Woodside. And biking to Half Moon Bay was pretty
standard.) However, some of my fondest memories are my weekend bike tours,
in particular two of them. The first was taking CalTrain to San Francisco I
rode in a few times; it was doable), biking across the Bay Bridge, then
through San Rafael, and taking the Larkspur ferry back to San Francisco.
Gorgeous views throughout. The second involved taking CalTrain to its
farthest south station, Gilroy. (Trains only run during rush hours on the
weekdays, but biking from the south of San Jose isn't bad. And if you
haven't seen the bike accommodations on CalTrain, it's worth the trip.) I
biked to Salinas, saw some Steinbeck sites, and stayed the night. The next
day I headed to the coast and biked to Santa Cruz, stayed the night. To
return, I started biking up and over the mountain on Rte 17, but I decided
that was suicidal, in more ways than one. There was a bus that goes over
the mountain that had a bike rack for two bikes on the front. When the bus
pulled up, alas, both bike places were in use, but the driver let me bring
the bike on the bus! I got off in Scotts Valley to visit a co-worker, but
later continued into Los Gatos, taking lovely suburban streets back to some
CalTrain station or other.

I don't know what you mean by "Riv-ish". My favorite top tube protector is

currently sold out:

Glad to hear it. A friend has a mixte and it had bottle mounts. I guess because
my mixte had a non-standard tube it didn’t. It was an older Austro Daimler.
I’ll see if I can find a picture - just lent the bike to a friend.

The only difference I found is that, since the mixte doesn't have a
traditional down tube, it didn't have a down tube braze-on for a water
bottle cage. How it rides depends on other design characteristics. Also,
there's no top tube, so no pressing your thighs against the top tube when
you go downhill. But I have that same issue with my folding bike.

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-14 Thread Leslie
If you switch your 539s out with 559's, you should be able to adjust it
enough to get the pads to fit 650b's, could go w/ 42's. (That's what I did
with my
Ram:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/8351735340/in/album-72157623199721925/

)

You could try sidepulls instead, not a bad route, wouldn't require a 650b
wheelset.

If neither of those float your boat: I would suggest looking for a
canti-Rom: it's almost a Ram, there are some out there w/ canti's, lets
you run a bigger tire. I'm running 700cx40 MSO's on
mine:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/16004557507/in/album-72157623199721925/

(caveat: it's REALLY close on clearance! Less than a 40 would be prudent.
)

Actually, thinking along those lines... if sidepulls or a 650b swap
doesn't do it, you might really want to consider a AHH... I know, you said
you didn't want another frame, but, maybe another frame would work better.
There's the new ones coming in from elsewhere, or, maybe a used AHH, or, a
Sam

Re: [RBW] Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-14 Thread Leslie
Yeah, I use a Tubus rear rack on the front of my Bomba as my Wald carrier
(well, there's a Platrack between the two, to keep the basket more stiff...
my intent was leave the basket/platrack as a combo, to come on and off the
rack as needed, but, have gotten to where I usually just leave it

[RBW] Re: convert A. Homer Hilsen 700c to 650b

2018-08-01 Thread Leslie
I converted my 60 Ram to 650b so I could fender over 42's, using Tektro
559's to do it; I understand why you're wanting to do what you're
wanting. But Hilsens are built for that bigger clearance w/ those
calipers, those calipers won't pull the conversion off on that frame.

I'm a 12 (and will probably slide into 13's before long as my feet widen),
I get the TCO issue: but I finally kept listening to G on this: it's not
really a big issue. Yeah, in slow speed turns, I've run my toe down the
tire, but, it's never caused me to go over, and as soon as you get just a
little bit of speed, you're not turning your tire far enough for your toe
to catch it anymore.

Here's my suggestion: switch to a centerpull to maximize the room, put the
fenders all the way up, and see if you can get something like MSO's on
there. I run MSOs on my canti-Rom, I don't think I need anything bigger
of a roadish persuasion. If MSOs won't fit, (they're 700c-40) [they might
even fit w/ your current calipers, but, maybe the centerpulls would help w/
fenders], find some cushy 38's, see how they do.If you're still not
happy... then keep your eye out for an appropriately-sized Saluki.

Good luck,

-L

I'm going to concur w/ Joe here...the Roadini is as close to a MIT

[RBW] Re: I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-12 Thread Leslie
Given you're in Pennsylvania, I'll second the idea of taking it to Bilenky.

What I did when I had Bilenky repair my son's Ram frame, was I had them not
repaint (as they normally want to do), then I masked off and painted a
limited area with a cream to match the headtube... as his was a having a
derailleur hanger replaced, it was easy enough to just paint the dropout
area, whereas for your case, it'll have to take more of the paint off the
seatstays higher up: will have to repaint the entire seatstays...

Good luck

[RBW] Re: NYC Bike Rental Recommendations.

2018-04-03 Thread Leslie Tierstein
If you're going to be in town for the Five Boro Bike Tour, and want to rent
in town, you probably need to do so ASAP because many of the bike shops
have special deals for renting bikes to riders in that Sunday ride. Sorry,
don't have any knowledge of bike shops that rent bikes in towns along the
RR lines. Your best bet -- both for bikes and for trails/riding -- might
be to take the Westchester line out of town and check the towns and trails
up in Westchester county and beyond.

As for Citibike (Bike Share) definitely use it for trips in town. (I do,
even when I have a bike with me.) It has spread to cover much more
territory than a few years ago. The only caveat for you is that: I found a
shortage of docking stations in midtown (40s and 50s). And, depending on
what neighborhood you're going to, at what time, it can be difficult to
find an available bike or a docking station to return a bike. I've
frequently had to go to the second- or third-closest docking station when I
was trying to park a bike in the West Village at night after 7 PM.

Temper side of things, since the Silver tubing should be coming into play,
but, that may be part of the holdup... they may be considering seeing if
Toyo might come back into sourcing, or maybe getting Mark Nobilette to
build them as needed, though that'd be competing against their customs,
too. I don't know any of that, no insider info, just hypothesizing out
loud...

Re: [RBW] 650b Atlantis Pic on the BLUG

2017-11-27 Thread Leslie
If you had an older Atlantis that was a 56 or under, ie, a 26"-wheeled
bike, you could use the Paul Motolites and run it as a 650b (if I ever run
across a cheap 56 Atlantis, I'd consider doing such). I wouldn't try to
run a 700c Atlantis as a 650b.

(Realize, I have to caveat things everytime I open my mouth, but this is
coming from a guy who converted his 700c Ram to 650b Hetres, and then for
awhile borrowed the 700c wheels for the 650b Bomba w/ Motolites, just to
see how it'd be, and it was fine...)

Re: [RBW] Re: Perennial "Can you still get a Legolas?" question

2017-07-15 Thread Leslie
Ok, so, awhile back, I was seriously considering getting a Legolas, was
talking to Mark about it, it was right when they decided to have Nobilette
build them and the price jumped, so I hesitated, then came across a
canti-Romulus, picked it up instead. Now, I'm not saying that a
canti-Rom is the same thing as a Legolas, but, it was awfully close, and
met my needs at the time. Very similar tubing I think, both have
canti-brakes... the geometry has some differences (for my size on a 59 the
canti-Rom has a 72-deg-seat-tube-angle, a 73-deg-head-tube-angle, and a
77mm BB drop; the Legolas has a 73-deg-ST and a 72.5-deg-HT, and a 70-drop;
the rear on the Rom is 132.5-wide, the Leg is 130; the chainstay was the
same at 44, the top-tube was only 0.5cm longer on the Leg, the fork rake is
4.25 on the canti-Rom and 4.5 on the Leg).Anyway, point being, they're
not the same bike, but they're awfully similar.

I am running MSO's, they're a 40mm tire. I have no spare clearance. If I
overinflate, the rear tire will start to rub the braze-on on the underneath
of the stay between the seatstays
(https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/16190324065/in/album-72157623199721925/).

I have to ensure I don't have too much air in the rear tire to keep it
from rubbing.I should probably downsize my tires, but I really like the
MSO's, really don't want to switch, so, I've left it alone for now. (For
safety's sake, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, would want to avoid such
liability, etc YMMV)

[RBW] Re: FS: 2007 NEW 56CM GREEN RAMBOUILLET FRAME/FORK (LATE MODEL #RB1100)

>

Since I did a 650b conversion, I should be one of the ones to say, the
official RBW answer on Rambouillet conversions to 650b is, "the BB would be
too low" but that was said when the normal tire width was a 32.

I think it works fine if you use a 650b-42 like Hetre or equivalent. But,
using a 42 means that your tire height is close to a 700c-25. So, if a
56cm on 700c wheels would be too big, then I would think that the 56 would
still be too big. I mean, yeah, you could use a 32 tire instead, but,
you'll start to run into more of a risk of having pedal strikes. The
reason to do a conversion is to run fatter tires, right? If you're going
to run less than a 32, I'd leave it as a 700c...

Although I love my Bomba, and I usually am putting more miles on my
canti-Rom anymore since I've got it set up for my more usual mixed-terrain
riding, if I was going for a longer road ride I'd be on my Ram in a
heartbeat, it was my first Riv and still my favorite.

It is a beautiful frame: I hope someone snatched it up.

[RBW] Re: Rovendell Romulus Modifications

2017-04-05 Thread Leslie
Is yours a canti-Rom, or with standard brakes?

Since mine is a canti-Rom, and I have a fendered Ram, I decided to forego
fenders and squeeze the biggest tires on I could, am running MSO's on there:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/16004557507/in/album-72157623199721925/

Am running Noodles with cross-checks.

The Rom is very similar to the Ram; my Ram, I did a 650b conversion on it,
am running Hetres under fenders.

[RBW] Re: Off topic question: portable cd players

2017-01-20 Thread Leslie
I just picked up a Sony CD player from an old friend who'd gotten it for
his kid's dorm, but they never used it, so he was getting rid of stuff
got it cheap, but is really nice. Actually, I have a bit of an eclectic
setup, a NAD receiver, a Sansui TU-717 tuner, a BIC turntable, the Sony CD
player, with some Paradigm speakers... nothing cost much of anything at
all, a lot was almost given to me, but it's far better than just good
enough, fwiw

Regarding inexpensive CD players
I seem to recall that there was a hifi audio guy, Gary Krakow, who liked
the idea of using original Playstations as a CD player for "hifi systems on
the cheap".

Thing is, w/ a CD player, they all should have respectable output... just
about any of them should 'suffice'.

Riv content: my audio setup is in the basement, next to the workshop, so I
can listen as a wrench on a Riv.

I think I got that one. Actually, most I was solid on, but then there

answer, but then a little more thinking came up with better answers... that
left me down to two to ponder on for a bit... one of them just hit me

came up with an answer that is 'right' but don't know if it's 'the' answer

[RBW] Re: Brass Bells

2017-01-17 Thread Leslie
Way back in my previous lifetime, we had to keep our brass polished up
nicely, untarnished, used a lot of Brasso (I can smell the barracks
now...). But eventually, you'd go buy an anodized version of all of those
bits, so you didn't have to polish them. But, if they wore, they'd lose
their coating, and you'd have to then treat them just like the older
regular brass and clean them regularly (Brasso would strip that outer
protective layer off). Have to admit, I just run w/ the patina'd look
these days...

Speaking of bells

Twice yesterday, while riding our local greenbelt, smaller kids (like,
maybe three or four year olds, riding with their families), coming from the
other direction, would ring their bells at me, just glad to ring their
bells at anyone. Each time, I'd ring back at them, which astonished them in
both cases... they weren't used to other folks having bells.

Most of the time, folks are pleased and tickled with a bell being rung for
them before you pass, but I've noticed an uptick of folks with either
earbuds stuck in their ears, or, are so engrossed with their phones, that
they never hear you ringing at them, then get offended when you pass
them sigh.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis vs Appaloosa

2016-08-25 Thread Leslie
I've often thought that if I did come across an affordable 56 Atlantis, I'd
like to 650b it; interesting that they're going ahead and doing it
themselves. (Also thought about a 650b Hunq, and they made that happen
too.)

Kellie,
Understand about wanting a bike, and having to wait to afford it. My Ram
(my first Riv), I put it on layaway; then when I got my Bomba, again, I put
a down-payment, took awhile before I had it paid off.

Your use: I get the Saluki for long road rides, as-is my Ram. You've got
your road-needs covered. The Cheviot: Okay, since it's a mixte, yeah, it
wouldn't be as easy to put on my bike rack w/o a top-tube converter,
but... I think of it as a Mixte-Sam, and a Sam shouldn't be that much
different than an Atlantis weight-wise. The Cheviot and the Sam should be
similar tubing to each other; the Atlantis' frame is going to be, a
different mix of tubing maybe, but the Atlantis will have a heavier fork:
I don't know that you'll see much of a weight-difference/savings.

Aside from the loading-up of the bike on a rack, how do you like the
Cheviot? I think, it should be fine for a lot/most of the uses that you've
outlined. Actually, I don't think any Riv would be particularly bad at
any of your mentioned uses, (save perhaps the Roadeo: it could handle a
lot of it but might be underbiking a bit); unless you're thinking
'serious' loading, I don't know that the Atlantis would bring more to the
table for your needs than the Appaloosa. I think the Appaloosa is an
awesome bike (don't have one, would like one). But, so is the Atlantis
I can understand wanting one; it has too much overlap w/ my Bomba, I
couldn't justify getting an Atlantis, but, I still would think on one if I
came across one for the right price

Keep saving: eventually you'll get enough saved up, that you can sell the
Cheviot and buy your Atlantis. Win.Or, sell the Cheviot and buy the
Appaloosa, still a win, just sooner. So, whichever you get, will be
fine.

Good luck...

Big price difference between the two. I'm sure there is a tubing
difference. But the Appaloosa has the Hunq fork so that's plenty strong.
Maybe better cosmetics, detailed lugging on the Atlantis. So you say why
not get a Hunq? But if I'm going to pop for a new Hunq I might as will buy
a new Atlantis. What do you think?

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet Serial #'s?

2016-08-09 Thread Leslie
Ha! This is the thread from six years ago where I started trying to fun
the numbers on the serial number breaks between colors, trying to figure
out how many of each color was made, what ended up on cyclofiend.com's Ram
page.

My green Ram is RB1207, and has the mid-fork braze-ons; your number as
RB1222 is even higher than mine, and is blue. Yours totally breaks the
pattern. Neat.

There has to be something special about it. I mean, it's the
highest-numbered Ram I know of, but it's blue instead of green. I almost
wonder if someone near the very end of the Ram line said, I want one, but
in blue...

Also, FWIW... my son's orange Ram is RB0944: by range, it should've been a
blue bike: but, it IS a 66, so since it's really tall, it may have been
handled differently for assembly/brazing...

Hey, I know where that frame came through! My Rambouillet, I picked up at

My green Ram, has the mid-fork and seatstay braze-ons; I know only the late

Legolas instead of the canti-Rom... truth-be-told, the canti-Rom is

My v-brakes are on a bike w/ fat 650b, I do have fenders and v-brakes
together, but not the TRP's, have Pauls instead.

Haven't tried the TRP's, sorry...

On which bike are you wanting to run them?

[RBW] Re: Bleriot Touchup Paint, Redux

Kinda funny, my wife and daughters have created quite a collection of
nail-polish for me, for the bikes...

I also have a Sally Hansen Hard as Nails for the green Rambouillet, Emerald

is a creamcicle color, I can't remember the brand off the top of my head.
I can't remember the Romulus blue, either, will have to look later

[RBW] Re: V-brakes & front racks

2016-03-04 Thread Leslie
My Bombadil has the fork-top braze-ons, so to have a solid support for a
Platrack to hold a Wald, I ran a Tubus rear rack on the front. If I was
running cantis, wouldn't have been as complex, but I'd decided to run Paul
Motolites before thinking about mounting racks. Had to get creative,
bending the rack strut w/ the rack mount on the strut, in order to clear
the brake's cross-bar.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/7460283524/in/album-72157623199721925/

(and toggle forward and backward a pic to see the bends, and mounted)

Another brake, like a Shimano, and then changing arm lengths, would have
been easier

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-04 Thread Leslie
George,

My green Ram is one of the last batch, w/ the mid-fork braze-ons, and does
have the pieced windows on the dropouts; I've recently gotten my son an
orange Ram, a tall one, and AAMOF, it needed its derailleur hanger
replaced, had Bilenky fix it up, but RBW supplied the dropout... and it is
the pierced one, too, to match the original that was replaced.

Actually, I just ran and looked: my Romulus has the pierced dropouts,
too...

I really would ponder if a dropout on a Ram or a Rom is solid, if it had
been replaced for some reason.

Barcons. Even though it was August in Glacier National Park, the
plummeting descent through the clouds over wet pavement was terrifying!

I'd love to have a copy, paper or digital; but at the moment, I'm not
buying a lot, and it said that it would be in connection w/ purchases

What I think would be interesting/fair/neat, is to have it as paper-only,
until the next one comes out, at which point this one goes digital, etc.
etc..

[RBW] Re: Look at my lugs!

2015-12-08 Thread Leslie
Several times on the Creeper and on the Greenbelt, I've had lots of
complements on 'em, but the one that stood out the most was once while
riding the Ram on our Greenbelt, my daughter and I'd passed an older
gentleman heading out, then met him again on our return leg as he rested on
a bench as we passed, he called out "I love Grant Petersen's designs!";
much to my daughter's chagrin, I had to pull up and turn around to chat w/
the fella for a bit... he'd previously run a bikeshop, had retired from
such.

Another similar story, I had the Bomba on Ocracoke; earlier in the week, I
had it locked up at various shops in the village, where it'd been noticed
closely. Near the end of the week, while riding through the campground
(again with my daughter), a fella came running out from his netting
shelter, calling out "My brother used to work for Paul's Components";
again to the chagrin of my daughter, I turned around and had to chat...
he'd even noticed the brakes on my bike. He's one of the Hunt brothers,
had left Cali and moved to Charlotte...

Yeah, Rivendells are not a bike to ride if you want to blend in

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-07 Thread Leslie
That pic was what led to me wanting a Bombadil, but, it was later on that I
got one, ended up w/ the diagastay one instead (but that's another story).

For the clearance aspect: at the time, there really weren't a lot of 650b
tires... the Quasi came out while the bike was being prototyped...
http://cyclofiend.com/rbw/bombadil/

The clearance you're showing on yours, is a bit more than I'm running on my
Rom...:

The later Bombas ended up w/ a lot more clearance:

[RBW] Kingsport library canti-Romulus sighting

2015-11-09 Thread Leslie
So, unlike the SF Bay area, there aren't as many Rivendells around here.
Thanks to MSL in Bristol, there's several, tho'... I usually see them on
the Creeper, or at Steele Creek; in Kingsport itself, other than my own,
I've only seen one other Rivendell, was a Quickbeam out on our Greenbelt.

Until, Thursday, long crazy day that's a whole other story, but I found
myself in downtown Kingsport that afternoon, canvasing the area by bike for
hours. While riding around the downtown area, on my canti-Rom, what did I
find parked outside of the library, but, another canti-Rom. My older
daughter just happened to meet me in the downtown area at the library when
I was arriving, and although she's not a 'bike person', even she noticed,
"wow, that bike is *exactly* like your bike, eerily so!". Of course,
being a canti-Rom, it was the same light blue, but this one had a Selle
Anatomica whereas mine are all Brooks, my tires were a lot larger (I'm
pushing it, running MSO's, whereas this one has sensible 32's on it)... It
was undecaled, the Romulus downtube decal had been removed, but, if you
knew what you were looking at, it was unmistakable that it was the same
frame as mine.

I didn't think it good form to go into the library hollerin' out, who's on
the Ram, and I still had a lot of ground to cover, couldn't just wait and
see who came out.

Anywho, just wondering if there's someone else in Kingsport here on the
list, that I'd not known about just reaching out to say hello

[RBW] Re: Front Racks with Top of Fork Attachment

2015-11-04 Thread Leslie
I took a Tubus Cosmo (which is normally a rear rack), and mounted it onto
the front of my Bombadil:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/7460286064/in/album-72157623199721925/

I then put a Platrack on top of it:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/18357092721/in/album-72157623199721925/

At that point, I normally ziptie a Wald basket onto the top of the
Platrack; the Platrack makes a great foundation for the basket.

[RBW] Re: Bleriot with Middle Ear Problem?

2015-10-28 Thread Leslie
I think Patrick and Jeremy have you covered, but, just trying to cover the
bases.

The 'squirreliest' thinng I've felt, is a crank-arm coming loose; I doubt
it, but, if the headset doesn't solve it, check the pedals, the crank
arms and the saddle, too, if it shifted around a bit, it could feel,
unusual

Not that I think these are the problem, I'm still onboard w/ Jeremy's list,
but, if all of them check out, those are what I'd check next...

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-08 Thread Leslie
A 56cm Atlantis instead? It's be 26" wheels, but might fit you better than
the 58cm.

If you want the 29x2.2, I'd lean towards the Hunq.

I'd consider a 56cm Atlantis w/ Motolites and 650b wheels. Or a Bombadil.

Or the Appaloosa.

Just get one, it'll be fine.

Sorry I'm late jumping in on this conversation (and I may have missed this
being addressed), but, a point of clarification

The above sentence, to me, reads that plantar fasciitis is caused by a
virus, which, is not the case plantar fasciitis being a condition
where there's inflammation of the plantar fascia, through overuse, being
overweight, improper footwear, etc...
(BTDT).

Lip Ivo.

I used to be a Carmex guy, and if I don't have Lip Ivo around, that's what

I have a couple of the quick-coin change holders, a couple of bandanas

several Irish straps, a bar or two of soap, but, Lip Ivo has become my

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations

Your inseam is 34, but what's your PBH?

I'm 6' even, with a 32 inseam, but my PBH is 34.5 = 87.6cm... I ride a
60cm Rambouillet, but a 56 Bombadil... if I was getting a Hunqapillar, I'd
go for a 54 (I could pull off a 58, too, but would be on the bottom end of
its size range for me).

My suggestion is: get a good PBH measurement
(http://www.rivbike.com/kb_results.asp?ID=39 ), then call RBW

 Hey Riv folks,

I have a new (as in zero miles) 58 cm Fuji Connoisseur that I'd like to
sell, at what I think is the extremely attractive price of $495. This is a
retro inspired modern bike with Reynolds steel frame, downtube shifters,
long reach brakes and other Riv-ish goodies. These sold for just shy of
$1,000 in the Performance catalog, then were reduced to $700 when I saw
them being closed out. I noticed the bare frames on closeout at Nashbar for
$400, but they are long gone now. I purchased this one at the Performance
store in Chapel Hill, NC, home of Performance. It had been used in a photo
shoot, then kicked around the warehouse for a couple of years until I
bought it late last fall. I purchased it for a friend, being far too big
for me, but his wife banned the new bike acquisition, so I'd like to get it
out of my garage. Absolutely new, never ridden, with the only known issues
a couple of minor scuffs in the paint and on the saddle corners from
 kicking around the Performance warehouse.

 Major features:

- Reynolds 725 Cro-Moly butted steel tubing
- 1 Cro-Moly steel fork with lugged crown
- Beautiful blue paint, with mostly *silver* components -- extremely
unusual and nice for a modern bike!
- Brakes Long reach (47-57'ish mm) Dia-Compe BRS-101
- Brake Levers Tektro polished alloy
- Down-tube shifters Sun-Race SLR63 (8 speed index or friction)
- Silver Tange traditional headset
- Crankset Fuji Alloy Forged 42/52T Chainrings
- Bottom Bracket Sealed Cartridge Square Taper
- Pedals Fuji Alloy Platform
- Front Derailleur MicroShift FD-R52
- Rear Derailleur MicroShift RD-R44S
- Cassette Sunrace, 12-25t, 8-speed
- Chain KMC HG-73
- Rims Alex RDP15, Double Wall, 32-hole
- Hubs Formula Alloy, Sealed Bearing 32-hole with quick release,
8-speed freehub
- Tires Continental Ultra Sport, 700 X 23c
- Handlebar classic bend Fuji Alloy
- Stem Fuji Alloy 1 Threaded
- Saddle Fuji Classic Comfort with Rivet (San Marco Regal knockoff)
- Seat Post Fuji Micro-Adjust Alloy, 27.2, 300mm

As I said, new, but with a few minor scuffs on paint and saddle corners.
Great commute bike with braze-ons for a rack and plenty of room for chunky
tires. Priced at $495 + shipping, or can be picked up in the Raleigh, NC
area. I prefer to have the bike packed and shipped by an LBS, to minimize
hassle and risk. I called a local shop who quoted $35 for packing,
 including all materials.

Someone please buy this, honestly it's a surprisingly nice bike for less
 than $500!

 Cheers,

 -Jack

[RBW] Re: Anyone try the new Maxxis Torch 29 x 2.10 tires?

Interesting tire

Have to admit, the tire I'm putting the most mileage on these days (my
usual riding is on a multiuse path that, while it has a lot of pavement,
also has some graveled path sections), is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Clement-Cycling-XPLOR-Clincher-Tire/dp/B008OHDXA0
Also a 40. Just barely squeaks into my canti-Rom's frame (if I
overinflate, it'll rub).

I'm intrigued by these new tires from Maxxis. 29 x 2.10 120tpi street
tires that come in 1/2 pound lighter than the equivalent Big Apples in a
similar size. I've finally nailed down a great fit and ride in a bike but
the substantial toe overlap is bugging me and I want to move up to a 1 1/8
headset due to me overflexing a 1 threaded stem. I'm pretty much decided
on an older canti-compatible Karate Monkey and these tires are at the top
of my list right now. I'm running 40's and the roads I ride are so rough
that they just aren't enough so I want a light 700c tire.

[RBW] Re: What's in your garage?

2015-07-29 Thread Leslie
My bikes:
60 Rambouillet, BRG green, triple, Noodle/barcon, converted to 650b, set up
as a rando w/ an Edulux and an Acorn boxy on a Marks rack up front, and an
Acorn medium/large in back. Lots of DuraAce bits on it.
59 canti-Romulus, usual pale blue, double, Noodle/downtube, running 700x40c
Clement MSO's on it. My 'naked' bike; gets the most mileage anymore, as
it's ideal for mixed-surface paths that I frequent.
56 diaga-Bombadil, in Ram orange, triple, Moustache/barcon, 650b on
force-field Fatty Rumpkins, Tubus Cosmo racks front and rear, Acorn large
bag in back, Wald basket up front on a Platrack; have run NeoMotos on it
before, and will again (if not something larger).
(All three are running 9sp XT cassettes and 760-SGS derailleurs.)

Also have a early '90's Nishiki MTB, was my college bike.

Wife has a Globe Carmel (subset of Specialized).
Younger daughter has a Trek 4300 women's MTB.
Older daughter has an older Specialized Rockhopper.
Son has a Motobecane Fantom CX cyclocross bike.

I held onto a kids KHS, for the granddaughter once she's old enough.
(I also bought a Burley Piccolo trail-a-bike for her from Peter M., but he
never shipped it and has disappeared. (I've even tried tweeting to his wife
to have him call or email me, but hasn't gotten a response yet.I'm
still trying to be patient, but, I'm about to give up.)

Would like a fatbike, but hasn't happened yet.

[RBW] Stem length considerations

2015-07-16 Thread Leslie
Just came across this in my morning reading...

Bike sizing should be, get the right size frame, then find the right length
of stem to dial in the cockpit length; but I usually hadn't thought of the
effect of weight distribution over the front tire

http://cyclingtips.com.au/2015/03/how-does-stem-length-affect-a-bikes-steering-and-handling/

Makes sense, just not a step in thinking about it that I'd considered...

Not that it's going to change anything I've done, but, it's something that
I might have in the back of my head...

[RBW] Re: Necro-stock! A shop with a new Rambouillet frame in stock?

2015-07-15 Thread Leslie
On Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 10:54:17 PM UTC-4, T.O.M. wrote:

The Alex website says the manufacturer is Rivendell. But surely these are
Toyo-made Rabous, right? I could be wrong, but my guess is that these bikes
went from Toyo to Alex without stopping in Walnut Creek.

Pulled it out of the box but haven't even unwrapped it yet. It's
different box than my previous NOS 54 Ram came in. This box has large
Rambouillet across the side panels, and Rivendell Rambouillet,
Oakland, Made in Japan on the end panels. I will be registering the s/n
with Riv HQ, and will be sure to ask about the Alex connection. Not worried
though, I know what a Ram looks like, this is the real deal. Aren't Alex's
Cycles and Toyo both in Osaka, Japan? If you read the Alex story,
originally they had a store front, so, maybe it's how they got there?.

that was me. i sold it complete to jordan francisco here in Bellingham
and also my AHH. Now i have a blue 54 Rambouillet and it is perfect for me

Not sure about the quote above, but if it's in reference to my original 54
Rambouillet, mine went to the east coast ~ Oct/Nov 2014...

 Manny

I bought my Ram via MSL as a frameset, came home in the box:
