Re: [RBW] Appaloosa 57cm Purple

2023-11-20 Thread Matthew Williams
Yes, and therein hangs a tale.

My plan was (and still is) to ride the Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1) from San
Francisco to San Diego. I bought the purple frameset to build a touring bike
with parts I’ve been collecting over the years.

Then I found a used bike with exactly the build I wanted.

Then the transmission in my work truck died, so this project and trip are on
hold for the forseeable future. Bleh.

Re: [RBW] Sizing Down? Pocket ‘Pus.

2023-11-14 Thread Matthew Williams
I’ve taken my bike on Amtrak's Capitol Corridor and Coast Starlight lines
without any questions or problems. Both trains had a carriage with a bike area:
bikes ride in an upright rack with folding arms to which bikes can be strapped
and locked without removing the front wheel.

No one measured my bike or asked me about it, and the times I’ve ridden the
train with my bike, I’ve seen only one or two other bikes in the rack.

Free local pickup in Berkeley. I can deliver it to a bike shop or UPS store of

2023-11-06 Thread Matthew Williams
Congratulations Adrianna! I’ve been watching for your bike at swap meets and
everywhere I ride and walk, so I’m very happy you got it back!

With regards to removing Sharpie: DO NOT use acetone! Acetone will remove the
clearcoat, decals, and the Rivendell enamel paint. Acetone is one of the
“hottest” solvents and I only use acetone when I’m cleaning bare metal.

So happy for your good news! Can you share more details of how you got it back?

Re: [RBW] What shoes does your Riv wear?

2023-10-04 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone,

I just got my second flat tire: a small chunk of glass pierced my brand-new
rear Schwalbe G-One Overland. The tire had less than fifty miles on it.

In the past two months, I’ve had more flats with new tires than I had in the
past three years with the Kenda tires that came stock from RBW.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need liners inside the tires, better/more durable
tubes, different tires, or all three?

[RBW] Tire Recommendations

2023-08-09 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone,

I need a new set of durable-ish, puncture-resistant tires.

Type of ride: Mostly long-distance rides on asphalt and concrete, and the
occasional gravel or dirt path.

Size: 700 x 50

Dealbreakers: I use tubes, and all-black sidewalls. No gumwalls or stripes!

I’m curretly looking at these two Schwalbe options:

G-One Overland:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/Schwalbe-G-One-Overland-11654399

Hurricane:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/Hurricane-11159185

Does anyone have experience with either of these tires? Are these good options?
Or, can you make a recommendation for another tire that would work for me?

As always, your experience, wisdom, and advice are welcomed and appreciated.

Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-05 Thread Matthew Williams
Don’t do it!

The college towns in which I’ve lived—and currently live—have a terrible
problem with bike theft. I frequently see cut locks and stripped frames in the
racks outside the dorms, apartment complexes, and university villages, and
certain streets in this college town are littered with sad piles of
disassembled frames, wheels, and miscellaneous parts.

Get a beater bike he won’t have to worry about when he locks it up outdoors. My
college beater bike got me around campus even though it was badly neglected: I
nad neither the time nor the money to spend on it . . . but I never had to
worry about it being stolen.

He shouldn’t have to worry about his heirloom Clem, and he’ll be heartbroken
when it’s stolen. Keep it safe in the garage, and save it for when he
graduates.

Re: [RBW] Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-06-16 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone, for my existing drivetrain:

RD: Shimano Deore M591
Cassette: 9sp Shimano XTR 11/34T
SIlver crankset 44/34/24 (standard-issue from Rivendell)
9sp chain

I need a front derailleur with a narrow 9sp cage.

Would the Alpina Triple front derailleur work with my setup? Is the Alpina
Triple designed to work with 7/8-speeds, or 9/10 speeds?

https://www.interlocracing.com/shop/60120-ird-alpina-front-derailleur-triple-braze-on-4020

(It’s braze-on, so I would be getting the 28.6 clamp.)

[RBW] When to Replace a Helmet?

2023-06-15 Thread Matthew Williams
Back in October, I was turning onto a path via a curb cut, but I was going too
fast and my front wheel slid out from under me. I scraped my hand and chin, and
my knee was bruised and swollen. As I landed on my shoulder, my head flopped to
the side and gently *tapped* the concrete.

If I hadn’t been wearing a helmet, my head would not have touched the ground.
The force with which my head and helmet touched the ground felt equivalent to
bumping your head on a desk as you bend down to pick up a pencil: you’re
surprised, but not hurt. I didn’t lose consciousness or have neck pain, and my
helmet has no visible scratches or scuffs.

I’ve heard and read helmets should be replaced after a crash--but what’s the
degree of severity? Are there any rules-of-thumb e.g. if the helmet was scuffed
from the impact, get a new helmet? The force with which my head touched the
ground didn’t feel hard or severe, but is that because the helmet absorbed the
impact? Do I need a new helmet?

Here’s a thread in which I researched and settled on Pantone 126 as a close

the paint to the existing frame.

the accuracy of the color match:

XtraColor X629: Soviet Interior Blue/Green (enamel)

Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color C391: Interior Turquoise Green Soviet (enamel, Liz found

Re: [RBW] Timeline for a Repaint (for a friend)

2023-04-15 Thread Matthew Williams
Finally, a question I can help answer!

Back in October, Rick at D painted my forks and he did a fantastic job. RBW
advised me to expect a four-week backlog; Rick said the turnaround was about
two to three weeks.

Rick sandblasted my forks, matched the color, he added an accent I wanted, and
gave me a small bottle of touch-up paint. I picked up my forks about ten days
after I dropped them off.

My forks were a small project (as opposed to an entire frame) and I can’t speak
for Rick's schedule, but I can say I couldn’t be happier with the finshed
result. Rick is amazing.

[RBW] 173 v. 178 Crank Arms?

2023-04-12 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone,

I am considering switching my crank arms. My existing arms are 173; I’m
thinking about going to 178. Here are the existing specs:

Bike: Appaloosa 58cm with 700c wheels
PBH: 90.5
I’m 6’ tall and I have long legs.

Here are my questions:

1: Will 178 arms work on my bike, or will I not have enough ground clearance?

2: Why was the bike originally built with 173 arms? Is it a standard/average
size, better ground clearance, better fit for the average user,
toe-hitting-the-front-wheel, or another reason?

3: Is the 173 v. 178 difference so minimal that I won’t notice it?

As always, your experience, wisdom, advice, and opinions are appreciated.
Thanks, everyone.

Re: [RBW] Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-26 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi Peter, to answer your queries:

1: Is there a reason not to contact Rivendell directly, and just ask them? […]

I asked at the swap meet if the Altus MD311 would work with my setup. The
package is stamped “ 3x7/8 Speed/34.9mm, but the fellow with whom I spoke
didn’t know if the Altus would work with my setup, and I’m respecting RBW’s
Garage Sale Guideline #1. (See above for the photo of their sign.)

2: I bet they'll want to hear what your beef is with the front derailleur they
supplied you in the first place

My jeans cuff got caught in the chainring and badly bent the original
RBW-supplied derailleur cage, so I need a new front derailleur.

3: you're manufacturing a lot of extra effort for yourself without clear
benefit.

I don’t know whether the Altus MD311 will work with my setup, which is why I
asked if it will work or if a better option exists.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-26 Thread Matthew Williams

Hi everyone,

I need to replace my stock Rivendell front derailleur. Can someone please
recommend a good front derailleur?

Here’s my existing setup:

Appaloosa
Rivendell Silver crankset and 3 rings
Rear cassette: Shimano XTR 11-34T
Rear derailleur: Shimano Deore long cage

With the exception of the rear cassette, all of the components came stock
with the bike.

I picked up a Shimano Altus FD-M311 at the swap meet. Will this work for my
setup? Does a better option exist? Please let me know your recommendations,
advice, opinions, and experience!

Thanks, everyone.

Its owner said the frame was bare metal when it was purchased, and RBW offered
to paint it.

I love all the custom touches people have added to their bikes.

What’s the collective noun for a group of bicycles? A flock of geese, a pride

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Wiring inside the Fork and Frame?

2023-03-22 Thread Matthew Williams

Hi everyone,

In the weeks to come I’m going to be revisiting the wire-inside-the-fork
trick. However, the hole is too small for the existing dynamo wires and I
do not want to enlarge the hole.

What would happen if I used a smaller-gauge wire inside the fork, to
connect the dynamo to the headlight?

Will a smaller-gauge wire be unable to handle the voltage/amperage from the
dynamo? Will the headlight and taillight outputs be weaker? Or will the
difference between the existing/stock wire and a smaller gauge be
imperceptible?

As always, your wisdom, advice, experience, and opinions are appreciated!

On Sunday, November 20, 2022 at 10:13:40 PM UTC-8 Matthew Williams wrote:

Hi everyone,

Most bikes I see with the SON dynamo have the wire wound around the right
front fork blade. I want to run the wire inside the fork using the small
hole near the dropout.

I’ve already fished a thin wire through the fork as a leader i.e. I can
attach the leader to the SON dynamo wire and pull it through the fork,
unless the dynamo wire is too thick. Below are photos of the leader wire I
fished through the fork.

Is this possible, or is it a bad idea? Has anyone here managed to achieve
this setup? If so, how did you do it, and please post photos of your
internal wiring setups!

[RBW] SON Hub & B+M Micro Taillight: must be wired to the front light?

2023-03-16 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone,

I have a SON dynamo front hub, with an Edelux II headlight. I was planning to
get the Busch + Muller “Micro” (µ) taillight:

https://www.bumm.de/de/produkte/dynamo-rucklichter/parent/332/produkt/332alk-silber-332alk-01-schwarz.html

Elsewhere, I read this particular taillight
"The µ is designed to be powered from the front light only"
"This light must be wired to a front light, and should not be run directly off
a dynamo hub”

I have several questions:

Is this setup inadvisable/poorly-considered?
Will the taillight sap power from the headlight?
Is the B+M Micro compatible with the Edelux II and SON hub?
Has anyone done this setup (SON hub, Edelux II, B+M Micro)?
Does this setup require special customization?
What should I know before getting this taillight and setting it up?

As always, your sage advice, experience, wisdom, and recommendations are
welcomed and appreciated.

I too have been planning a ride along that route, and I found these plans for a

What’s the story? Does anyone know?

[RBW] Tubeless tire on a non-tubeless rim?

2023-02-23 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi all,

I have a set of tubeless 700c Panaracer tires but I want to mount them on a set
of non-tubeless 700c Atlas rims. Yes, I know I’ll need to use tubes!

Will a tubeless Panaracer Gravelking tire work/mount/fit/seat properly on a
non-tubeless Atlas rim?

If I have tube rims, is there a reason why I shouldn't use tubeless tires (with
tubes) instead of tube tires?

I thought the way you knew Northern from Southern California was if people
named freeways with “The”:

“This is the 101” = you’re in Southern California

“This is 101” = you’re in Northern California

“That was Highway 101” = you’re listening to a classic rock station

by "Henry Wildberry" where he and his riding companion(s) are cycling up
and down some excellent North Bay area hilly/mountainous paths and roads
equipped with little more than "fair weather" garments vs. what we have to
wear in the Midwest Winters. Makes me want to move there...but not really.

Re: [RBW] Stolen 58cm Rivendell Atlantis - Berkeley

2022-12-07 Thread Matthew Williams
I’m sorry, Dave.

I live in Berkeley, and I see a lot of stolen bikes in my neighborhood so I’ll
definitely keep an eye open for your bike.

Please send me your phone number, the BPD report number, the serial number, and
what you want me to do if I spot your bike. Please also register your bike with
bikeindex.org and project529.com/ .

Bike Index and Project 529 are free, searchable databases for checking the
serial numbers of bikes for sale.
