One could take some sandpaper to the inside of the clamp area, widen the

[RBW] Re: Moving shift levers from downtube to stem

Thanks for all your input folks. @KenP, I have a pair of vintage friction
bolt of shifters, and the clamp that held them on the downtube. But the
clamp diameter is a lot bigger than my stem. Maybe I can find a clamp
meant for the stem? I appreciate what you say about the IRD mount's
fragility. @Joe Bernard, I think picking up a cheap pair of levers might
be what I end up doing

[RBW] Ghost shifting on the Clem

2020-04-19 Thread Wayne Naha
I should have posted this a while ago, when I figured this out, but that
clearly didn't happen. Now with lots of time on my hands, why not? I had
posted a coupe of times about the shifting problems the Clem was having.
Ghost shifting, never wanting to settle down on a cog, very sensitive to
the slightest input from the shifter, etc. At first, I blamed myself. The
last time I had friction shifted was back when five cogs in the rear were
standard. I figured that I just wasn't doing it right. I had tightened
the screw on the hex bolt on the stock shifters to prevent them from
slipping. This reduced the problem some, but did not eliminate it. For
some time, I rode the Clem as a single speed, since when I would finally
get the drive train happy, I never wanted to disturb it again. This was,
of course, unsatisfactory. And even though I had been told that the rear
derailer was not the cause of this problem, I began giving the wonky
looking Claris RD the stink eye. Finally, I decided to replace it. Even
though it could not be the cause of the problem. I did have what I thought
was a sexier looking Deore LX RD in my parts bin. If I was doomed to have
a chattering drive train, it would be with a nicer RD. But it was in the
process of changing out the RD that the root cause of my problem was
revealed. For as I am adjusting the travel of the derailer, and running
the chain through, lo and behold I discover there is a frozen link in the
chain!
After a few minutes of flexing the chain, the frozen link is freed, and I
finish the install. Now, when I go for the test ride, my Clem is
blissfully silent! Shifting is a breeze! I can have any gear I want!
Now, some of you old hands at bike maintenance are probably saying to
yourselves, "Of course, you big dummy! You should have checked that right
away!" Probably true, but I never expected this on a new chain. I've only
seen this on old, beat, rusty chains. Anyway, I have since apologized to
the Claris for wronging it in my heart, but it's still not going back on my
Clem. The Deore remains completely better looking.

I took the cranks off a thrift store bike for my daughters. This seemed to
work very well. My wife wanted to buy a balance bike, but that was out of the
question financially. I could have put it back together for my oldest girl,
when she was ready for pedals, but we handed it on. There was a thriving
market of bikes for tykes in our old neighborhood, where there were lots of
children to pass an old bike on to. Those heavy steel bikes would not wear out
or break.

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-01-02 Thread Wayne Naha
I will gladly buy a Rivendell gift certificate now, and spend it later, if
that's what they need. Rivendell is a quirky company, that has quirky
needs and quirky customers like me. It breaks my heart to think of
Rivendell closing their doors for good. I probably would not be bicycling
today if I had not encountered Grant Petersen and his 'just ride'
philosophy. He validated my own ideas regarding bicycling and bicycles,
and gave me the confidence to act on them. I have been a long time
customer of Riv and will remain so, because Riv and Grant project a vision
that I support, not just regarding all things bicycles, but in a larger
sense as well.
It is a bitter pill that most folks in our consumer society are not
concerned with the values a company supports, but only the cost of the
goods. It is, perhaps, just a hard fact that most folks inclined to 'just
ride' bikes with flat pedals and upright bars are going to do it on
sub-$500.00 bikes. I know my wife blanched at the cost of my Clem, and
said that was more money than she had ever thought a (not-racing) bike
could cost. That's a tough attitude to overcome. An appreciation of the
quality and versatility of my Clem, or any well made bicycle really, is
simply absent among the folks with whom I am acquainted.
So it's a tough sell, and Riv will hang by a thread, as they have do. I
will hang with them.

Thank you, Grant, for taking a stand on the side of humanity. Every time
you do make your views known, I am that much more proud of you and
Rivendell. It does take courage, and you set a grand example. I am also
gratified by the response of the listers here. If the separation of
children from their parents could be considered a "divisive" or
"acrimonious" topic here, I would need to find a new bicycle forum. I am
glad to see that the RBW can come together on this.

[RBW] Re: Balance Bike Delight

2018-05-05 Thread Wayne Naha
We started our girls on a balance bike as well. I took a small child's
bike, removed the "training wheels," pedals, and the crank and chain. They
loved it. They would wiz about the yard. One possible drawback was that
after removing the crank, the bike had no brakes, since it was only
equipped with a coaster brake. So when they grew into a pedal bike, they
still tended to stop with the toes of their shoes. It still worked out,
and I was glad they were spared the unnecessary scrapes, bruises, and (in
my case) a chipped tooth in learning to ride the 'traditional' way. Also,
they had a blast riding around on the balance bike, which was just about
the best outdoor toy they had.

[RBW] Re: Alternative Bars for the Clem

2018-03-08 Thread Wayne Naha
Thank you for the measurements, Tom! That will be a big help in figuring
out a good setup. Maybe one of those Wright 'zero stems' from AnalogCycles
<https://www.analogcycles.com/2018/02/26/wright-stem-write-up/> would be
useful here. Though they are a bit pricy. I just don't think that the
Nitto UI-12 stem is gonna put a Jones bar high enough, and even the minimum
60mm extension may put the bars too far forward.
After you installed the Jones loop, what changes did you notice from the
Bosco bar?

[RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)

2017-05-30 Thread Wayne Naha
Congrats on your upcoming bundle of joy! It's the start of everything.
But back to bikes, I'd sell two of them right off just for the sake of
domestic tranquility, the two vintage bikes. Buy a nice crib and dresser
with the proceeds. If you don't really need to sell, but just have no
place to put the bikes, perhaps you could improvise some outdoor storage?
It doesn't have to fancy, just enough to keep the weather off, and keep
them secured. If not, I think you are headed towards the 'one bike
solution.' In my experience, nothing got my dear wife as ready to blow her
top as barking her shins (again) on some MKS Touring pedals. Also, the
bike as an 'objet d'art' in the living room didn't fly in my house. Small
house + no alternative storage = one bike, at least for me. Now which bike
should you pick? Tough choice. Clearly it's either the Hunq, or the 650b
Atlantis, and you can't really make a bad choice here. 650b Atlantis,
though. NIce.

Mark, you are so right, it is a lot of fun. My youngest suggested that we
go ride again this morning, and so we went for another couple of miles. We
saw some wild turkeys not twenty yards off in a field. I do feel a little
sorry for the girls when we are going uphill. They are having to stand to
pedal up the bigger hills, where I just comfortably shift to a lower gear.
Then while going downhill, if not for riding the brakes, I would pass them
coasting while they pedal hard. Maybe I should repack their wheel
bearings! Still, what's all that youthful energy for, if not to spend it
pedaling furiously.

[RBW] A Spring Ride with my Girls

2017-05-06 Thread Wayne Naha

My lovely girls and I went for a nice ride this beautiful spring morning.
There were strong and steady head winds and quartering winds, but my stout
hearted girls did not complain, for there was ice cream waiting for them at
our destination.

Here we are in the famous "missing bicyclist" formation.

I let the girls set the pace all the way there. I told them they would
'beat' me to the store, and this really added to their motivation. (Why do
they have to beat their old man?)

Here we are at the Rodney General Store and gas station, enjoying the
fruits of our labor.

In that I am still doing a low card diet, I did forgo the ice cream. It
was reward enough to be out with my kiddos on this brilliantly beautiful
day. But despite the sun, when the winds blew, it was quite cool, and we
were under-dressed. Could have used a windbreak, but I thought our
activity level would be enough to keep us warm. It didn't. Still, ice
cream fixes most problems.

Traffic was sparse, and thankfully, what traffic there was gave us wide
berth and were very cautious making their way around us. This was our
first foray out onto the highway, and the kids tend to be a little wobbly
in their steering.

Here we are, home and dry.

Despite having just eaten an ice cream cone, both girls were ravenous upon
return, and made themselves large ham sandwiches which they then inhaled.
I was a mite peckish myself, and ate slices of ham and cheese.

It occurs to me that I have said very little about my Clem here, except to
complain about the ghost shifting, which seems parsimonious to me. The
reality is that it is a wonderful bike to ride. It goes just as fast as I
can pedal, and really seems to disappear beneath me. I am just sitting on
the saddle, gliding along with the wind in what's left of my hair. I am
really grateful that Grant and Rivendell decide to put their energies
toward the development of this bicycle that produces such glee when ridden.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

2017-03-06 Thread Wayne Naha
It's all about having the choice! Joe Appaloosa may cover the same
functional range of the Atlantis, but that's not the end of the story. The
Atlantis has a style and grace all it's own. The Appaloosa has it's own,
too, but different. And that's the choice. An embarrassment of riches,
perhaps. A good problem to have.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

2017-03-05 Thread Wayne Naha

>From the Blug, on the premier of the Joe Appaloosa:

If it’s “half Sam, half Hunqa,” howzit different than an Atlantis?

Boy, that’s a good, tough question and the only way to answer it is with
facts, so here they are:

• Atlantis has a thicker/heavier duty fork. Even though we call the
Atlantis a road-touring bike, too, the heavier fork make it a heavier duty
bike. Good for an extra 60lbs or so.

So, it's clear that the overlap between the Appaloosa and the Atlantis has
been known all along, and the main functional distinction is that the
Atlantis is a heavier duty bike.
I have always thought that the Sam was a sort of lower cost analog of the
Homer. So it made sense to me to think of the Appaloosa as a lower cost
analog of the Atlantis. Not exactly the same in either case, but pretty
close, and for almost half the price.

No, Steve, it doesn't have to be a freewheel at all. The Grand Bois 120mm
cassette you found is amazing. I had no idea that such a thing existed.
It really is ideal. I really wasn't relishing the use of a freewheel,
mainly because they don't seem to be made anymore. And with the Grand Bois
I can get an extra cog tucked in back there, which is nice. The rear
spacing of this bike has been the sticky wicket in the whole 700C
conversion project. It made no sense to me to go to all the effort and
expense of ditching the 27" wheel, only to keep the freewheel. Thanks for

[RBW] Re: Recovering from Ankle Surgery

Bill, you are so correct about the sensitivity, I was not expecting this
level of fun. And about finding a 120 mm hub! But I've got time on my
hands to look. Thanks to all who have responded. That 120mm Grand Bois
cassette hub is certainly an interesting option.

[RBW] Re: Recovering from Ankle Surgery

2017-03-01 Thread Wayne Naha
I would like to keep this conversion as simple as possible, so changing out
the BB is not a priority. A five speed freewheel plus a triple chainring
crank is plenty enough for me. The existing brakes are CP, though I was
thinking of replacing them with the longer reach Silver side pulls. I
don't think the current CP brakes have sufficient reach. The brake levers
are original, and leave much to be desired. And while the current headset
is not showing any signs of a problem, I do have an Ultegra headset not
doing anything in my parts bin. I may as well throw it on.

I had wanted all sparkly new hubs, along with the new rims. But the rear
spacing issue had slipped my mind. The freewheel is in decent shape, and it is
a five speed, so that means 120mm spacing? What about 'cold setting' the rear
triangle? Any downside to that?

[RBW] Recovering from Ankle Surgery

2017-03-01 Thread Wayne Naha
This past Monday a very helpful and friendly orthopedic surgeon kindly
harvested a tendon from somewhere inside my right foot and used it to
replace a long missing ligament that used to stabilize my ankle when
walking. He also scraped out a good deal of osteo-arthritic buildup that
had been limiting the range of motion of my foot. Recovery has been a bit
painful so far. There can be no weight on the joint for three weeks. So
here I am, reclining on the couch, a little loopy from pain meds, but so
far not watching daytime TV. To pass the time, I'm kind of daydreaming
about doing a 700C conversion to my 1976 Raleigh Gran Sport. It's a nifty
little number with double butted 531 frame, fork, and stays. Years ago I
installed a Moustache h'bar and Technomic Deluxe stem, also a new cartridge
bottom bracket and a Sugino XD2 triple crank. Now for the wheels. I'd
like to be able to take advantage of the huge variety of 700C tires. And
going to 700C will give me more clearance for a wider tire, something I
definitely want now that I am out in the country with all the washboard
dirt roads. So, any suggestions on how to proceed? I've never done one of
these conversions.

Re: [RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-28 Thread Wayne Naha
If Velocity is acknowledging a problem with the Synergy rims cracking, then
it seems settled that this is not normal or expected wear. Too bad Leah
did not kn ow about this before paying for a new wheel. Otherwise, I think
a free replacement rim, including new spokes, and the labor for lacing it
up to the old hub would have been the decent thing for Velocity to offer.

Re: [RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-28 Thread Wayne Naha
I thought it unusual that the rim was cracking. Not saying that the rim is
defective, but perhaps has been overloaded with all the school supplies. A
heavier duty rim may be in order here. Rims are consumable, but the cracking
would be a concern for me. I have decades old rims with no such cracking.

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-17 Thread Wayne Naha
I will certainly try tightening down the screws on my shifters. Since they
gave me problems from day one, I didn't figure they were loose, but
anything can happen, I guess. I cut my teeth on friction shifting, but
only five cog freewheels. Then there was the hiatus when I was riding
indexed shifting. Generally, I prefer manual over automatic, so I was glad
to get back into friction shifting with the Clem. I figured the problem I
was having was due to degraded technique from 'the hiatus,' and the fact
that there were three more cogs shimmied into the rear cluster. A recipe
for a real fuster cluck if ever there was one. So I'll tighten down the
shifter bolt, and maybe try the barrel adjuster to account for the fact
that the cables are new and stretchy. If that doesn't work, there is at
least one derailer in the parts bin that could get swapped in, and if that
doesn't work, maybe those new Silver Shifters, V2 will be showing up soon.
I don't like to blame the equipment, but since others report the same
problem, maybe it's not all me, either.

[RBW] Re: RIVEOPARDY

2017-01-13 Thread Wayne Naha
Joe, I did try to answer every question. The were some I did not know the
answer to, so I made something up. I wrote the title of the category, and
listed my answers in the same order as the questions (clues). I hope that
is sufficient for the contest. I did not rewrite everything. In the
actual game of "Jeopardy!" an answer to a question is given, and players
must guess at the question which would be answered by the clue. Thus, all
the 'answers' for this game must be phrased in the form of a question. For
instance, if the clue is "The founder of Rivendell Bicycle Works," the
answer is: "Who is Grant Petersen?" It takes some getting used to.

[RBW] Re: Rosco v.3

2016-10-29 Thread Wayne Naha
Wow, I really love that blue 58cm Rosco Road model. Everything about that
bike just seems ideal to me. It looks like it would be great fun to ride
around. Since it has a Quickbeam fork, I would build it up as a single
speed. Just for fun.

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-22 Thread Wayne Naha

Well, I am done with downtube shifters. I have one bike with downtube
shifters, and that's going to change when these SS2's become available.
Even back in the day I was never all that enamored of them, and now I just
can't even deal. If you love 'em, more power to ya, bro, but they are not
for me. To me, downtube shifting only makes sense when riding drop bars in
the drop position. Being that I am all upright now, that downtube is just
outta reach. Also, I will be swapping the SS2's for the Sunrace shifters
currently on my Clem. I'm not for sure they are the problem here, but I'm
ready to try something new...
