He used felt as a padding under the cloth tape. I set up my wife's bike
this way and it was quite comfortable.

We also have our tandem set up with a barcon and ESI grips. Just slipped
the grip over the cable using a little alcohol. I have not used cloth tape
over them but it seems like it would work about the same as the felt.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Edelux II Headlamp Moisture - Is my light cooked?

2024-03-18 Thread christian poppell
Hey Collin,

I had the same issue with my hanging Edelux (also while living in
Berkeley). The condensation would not go away no matter how long I kept it
out of the rain. Turns out there was a bad batch of lights. I sent my light
to Peter White and received a new one from the good folks at SON after a
few months.

Re: [RBW] Stainless bottle/ cage recommendation

2024-02-29 Thread christian poppell
I have this Bivo and use Nitto R cages I purchased from the list. No
rattles and the bottle goes in and out of the cage smoothly with no
rattling. I've been really impressed with the Bivo. Its easy to drink from
and keeps ice super long, even during the summer here in Phoenix, (~115F).
Another bonus is the water does not taste like plastic.

And if you're averse to logos, the Bivo logo came off easily with acetone
on the un-painted stainless model. (I own this one

Re: [RBW] Re: Cantilevers or Direct Mount-Centerpulls

2024-02-26 Thread christian poppell
Hey Kyle!

I have used cantilevers and direct mounted centerpulls (MAFAC RAID with new
Rene Herse hardware). If I could do it over I would have installed
cantilevers. The downsides for centerpulls for me are modulation, fender
fitting, and braze on locations on the fork.

Modulation - The MAFAC RAID brakes feel more squishy to me, even after
adding a brake booster to the rear. Also, despite my best efforts, I have
not been able to eliminate the howling from the rear brake. I threw
everything at them, new bushings, toe in washers, salmon pads, black
compound pads, sanded and filed the pads, sanded the rims, rode and braked
in the rain and in the dirt. Nothing has stopped the howl.

Fender fitting - There would be a lot more room to mount fenders and large
tires with cantilevers. Honjo h80s rub on the inside of the centerpull
arms. If you want to go above 42mm tire with fenders I would go cantilever.

Post location on the fork - Not a deal breaker but the posts are mounted
really close to the fork crown. Its more of an aesthetic thing for me. In
fact, its probably better as it moves the posts into the HAZ of the fork
crown/blade joint

Brian Chapman has some of the best reference images for how large tires,
large fenders, and direct mount centerpulls should
look. https://www.flickr.com/photos/chapmancycles/35900124245/in/photostream/

Which CPs are you considering and what is your max tire size? Will you be
using fenders? are you planning on mounting anything to the brake studs
(racks, lights etc) ?

Good Luck!

Hey All,

At Ed's suggestion, I ordered the Topeak 4349. I found a good deal from a
seller in Taiwan on eBay. It fits great on the 50 Platy, despite only
having 40cm between the peg and headtube.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

[RBW] Re: Seat lug crack

2024-01-24 Thread christian poppell
Amateur framebuilder here...

Id drill a hole to stop the propagation of the crack then TIG weld to fuse
the crack. grind smooth to finish. I would try that first before replacing
the whole seat lug.

"If my understanding of frame construction is correct, that also means the
top of the seat tube is cracked, since it extends through the seat lug and
is cut off even with the top of the lug."

Some seat lugs are like that, many lugs used in production have a shelf on
the inside where the seat tube would be cut at 90deg then inserted into the
lug. (image from torch and file
)

I believe that is how the lug is on the QB, I can check mine when i get
home and report back.

Are you at U Michigan? If so, there's Doug Fattic (Niles, MI) and Franklin
Frames (Newark, OH?) that are closeish. Doug is great, I don't have
experience with Franklin but have heard he is willing to take on odd jobs.

[RBW] Re: Favorite Bay Area S24Os?

2024-01-22 Thread christian poppell
Hey Jesse,

I've visited Samuel P many times via bike. Pre 2020, hiker biker site at
Samuel P was no reservation required. Even when the hiker/biker was "full"
there was always enough room to squeeze in. The best part of sharing the
site with others is hearing their stories. Some were overnighters like me,
others were from Europe and hiking up the California coast. You might want
to check on the policies of the state park as many things have changed
since 2020.

Riding to go camping was a revelation for me. I could ride to a
destination, sleep, then ride back which doubled the distance between
points I could ride in a day. It sounds silly writing it out but was
totally mind blowing at the time as all my rides prior were planned around
getting back to where I started.

Here's a write up I did back in 2017 about riding up to Samuel P on a
Quickbeam.

Please give us an update after your trip. always enjoy reading others ride

The Topeak looks like a good option. Ill pick one up and give it a try.

For me, I prefer the utilitarian aspect and low cost of the Topeak. I can
better justify leaving a 40$ pump at the bike rack rather than a 75-100$
one. I do like the look of the Silca though.

Thanks again Ed for the suggestions!

Hi Gang,

I'm looking for a HPX-1 for a 50cm Platypus. Space between the peg and
headtube is 410mm. Looking to pay retail for like new and less if the pump
is used.

Also, if anyone has a good alternative I'm all ears with the HPX out of

[RBW] Re: Help me repair Pam's Silver shifters

2023-09-21 Thread christian poppell
I too am impressed that the pawls have worn out. I havent seen it mentioned
yet, what is the original material of the pawl?

For 3d printing, Shapeways.com can print in a variety of materials with
good resolution and decent timeline.

For lasercutting, Sendcutsend.com is a good economical option if they have
a stock that matches the thickenss of the pawl. Resolution with laser
cutters is pretty good but oversizing the mating surface and filing to fit
would probably give the best result with the least amount of fiddling.
Might have to work around a minimum size requirement but you could gang a
few together with bridges. They have all sorts of materials in different
thicknesses.

A jewelers saw, flat stock, and some paitence would do the same but theres
a little more skill involved.

If you need any help drawing it up for cutting shoot me a PM. Happy to help
get these shifters back on the road!

Re: [RBW] A College Clem

  TL;DR

   - I disagree... Clem College Cruiser FTW!
   - Properly lock it up with multiple locks to a secure rack
   - don't leave it in one spot outside more than a day, less if the spot
   sees high traffic
   - Revert it to stock/cheap(but cheerful) configuration
   - make it uGly to thieves, duct tape, spray paint (over the duct tape),
   stickers, used parts.
   - understand the responsibility of caring for a bike on campus and the
possibility that despite your sons best effort, it still could get stolen
   - If the thought of losing this specifc clem is too much, get a used or
new Clem that you don't have an emotional attachment to

Hey Leah,

I'll be a voice of dissent, I rode a precious to me bicycle through college
(Gainesville, FL), locking it up both outside at a dorm room. on errands to
the store, and outside the architecture building where I spent most of my
time. Later, it spent time locked up outside the Ashby BART station in
Berkeley while it was at work.

Most of the bike theft that happened on campus was due to bicycles being
left in one spot too long. A thief will grab a wheel or a saddle and from
there, the bike begins losing parts left and right, like a dead whale at
the bottom of the ocean. The other thefts that happened were due to poor
locks or incorrect locking.

I think if the Clem were dressed down to less expensive parts and became
less pretty it could work. Pitlocks, ball bearings glued into allen heads,
and hose clamps all make great deterrents as does tape, stickers, and other
adornments (helps save the paint too). Multiple quality U locks properly
used should be enough deterrent to a casual thief. The question to your son
would be if that kind of responsibility is something he is up for? One of
the great things about going away to school is being immersed in the
culture and having the flexibility to do new things with new people.
Worrying about your bike being stolen can put a damper on those
experiences.

At the end of the day, if someone recognises the bike and wants to take it
they will; even quality locks are easy to cut with the right tools. The
good news is that the giant Clem is a very "cool" bike to most people.

One additional solution is to get a pre owned or new Clem that you have
less history with, won't sting as much if it does get nicked. Grant and Co.
designed the Clem to be a bike one could do everything on and not be
precious about.

There's a metaphor here about loving something and letting it go and the
freedom that comes when we separate ourselves from the items that we own
but this is getting long.

Christian
Phoenix, AZ

PS: The only things that happened to the bike while outside was people
putting garbage in my basket (cups, wrappers) and someone unraveled half my
bar tape which was fine because it was time for new tape anyway.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Wiring inside the Fork and Frame?

2023-06-08 Thread christian poppell
Hey Brizbarn,

Correct, tail light should be powered through the appropoite connector on
the headlight. I believe the tail light has a lower power requirement than
what the dynamo provides.

I attached a diagram that is the same wiring scheme as my bike and what
your message discribes, its easier for me to understand if I draw it than
to write it out (electrical peeps, forgive me for the + and -). Sounds like
what you described would work though! You can pull those little red caps
off the ring terminals (loop crimp) and use heat shrink for a cleaner look.
The connections can be soldered or crimped in place.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Wiring inside the Fork and Frame?

2023-05-25 Thread christian poppell
Hey Matthew,

I’m replying on my phone so apologies in advance for any typos or non-standard
formatting.

Running two wires to the taillight from the dynamo is probably the best and
loner straightforward way to do it. It’s a closed system and easy to track down
any issues if they arise.

I’m not sure which model B light you have but you can certainly try grounding
one side of the dynamo and one side of light to the fork and frame
respectively. I’ve heard the anodizing on some higher quality cartridge bearing
headsets (Chris King, etc) can prevent the continuity between the fork and the
frame. In the past folks have suggested removing the anodization around the
neck of the headset cup to allow current to pass through. It’s easy to check
for continuity between frame and fork; set a multimeter to resistance (ohms)
and touch one probe to bare metal on the fork, and the other probe to bare
metal on the frame (eyelet or dropout works well). If the needle or number is
close or on zero you shouldn’t have a problem. If there’s no change in reading
then you don’t have continuity, probe around and start troubleshooting :)

> Splitting a single length of Velo Lumino wire into two and adding spade
> terminals would not work, right?

Not sure what you mean by the above. The Velo Lumino wire that I have is a
single strand. One of the headlight companies includes a two stranded 22ga wire
that can be split into single strands. The insulation on that wire is less
durable and larger in diameter making it difficult to pull through small holes.
One strand is black and the other is white, bare wire is copper. Is that the
wire you’re referring to?

The wire Velo Lumino sells is thin (22ga?) and has a tough but thin insulation
that is much smaller in diameter to hardware store wire or anything else I’ve
found. I find it easier to work with compared to the coaxial wire Schmidt uses
on their lights.

In the next few months I’ll be reconfiguring my lighting setup. I can snap some
photos and draw some diagrams if you’d like some more detailed information on
how it’s configured.

Hope that’s helpful!

Hey Matthew,

Smaller wire is fine. The wire that Velo Lumino sells is perfect. Any 22
or 24gauge multistrand wire would work but the Velo Lumino wire is flexible
and has very durable insulation. You could also seperate the BM dual strand
wire. The insulation is thicker and less durable but works fine.

If the hole diameter is too small to pull two wires you can ground through
the frame. Ground one side of the dynamo to the fork eyelet
https://photos.app.goo.gl/xBqTJ575zxQkeUC49 then ground one side of the
light to the mount or other hard point
https://photos.app.goo.gl/wPGMviZF9n5cYycn6. Run a single wire through the
fork and connect to the light.

Hope that makes sense! I can draw up a diagram if thats helpful. How much
wire do you need? I might have some to spare if needed. Also what light and
dynamo are you using?

[RBW] Riv-ersed Shift Levers Install

2021-03-04 Thread christian poppell
Hi Gang,

I've got the Microshift 9speed thumb shifters on Albatross bars installed
the normal way (outside, top). I'm looking for info on setting them up on
the inside like this:

http://lovelybike.blogspot.com/2016/06/brifter-bliss-for-swept-back-handlebars.html

Is it just a matter of moving the left to the right and vise versa? I
recall some modification needing to be done to the Sunrace shift body, is

[RBW] Re: A Bit Irked that Riv Changed the Seatpost Size

2020-11-24 Thread christian poppell
It would be a seat tube change and not the lug. Many tubes for are butted
internally so that lugs will fit multiple tube butt thicknesses.

28.6mm x .9mm wall (26.8mm ID) vs .7mm (27.2mm ID).

[RBW] Re: COVID face mask that lets you breathe and doesn't cause glasses to fog?

2020-11-23 Thread christian poppell

Hi Patrick,

I've been happy with the masks from BAGGU:

https://baggu.com/collections/reusable-masks/products/fabric-mask-set-loop-twilight-1

These are sewn with panels top and bottom to allow a space in front of your
mouth that gives more room for conversing. It's about as breathable as any
other well made mask. I've gone on bike rides for exercise with the mask it
is tolerable. I think it's better than wearing a Buff because the fabric is
not pressed directly against my face.

The top edge of the mask has a wire that can conform to the bridge of your
nose. This wire does two things: it helps keep the mask from falling down
and it keeps hot humid air from fogging your glasses.

Downsides are the colors, sold in packs of three, and they are currently
out of stock.

We also have the masks from BAGGU that tie behind the head which are better
for long term wearing. I tend to prefer the elastic style for easy on/off
while running errands.

Full disclosure, a friend of ours works at BAGGU. They also make great
grocery bags that are lightweight and extremely durable.

[RBW] Re: The Quickbeam Rides Again!

2020-08-03 Thread christian poppell
Hey Bird,

I'm glad you took the plunge and got the Quickbeam back on the road.
Something that gives so much joy deserves to be repaired and brought back
to life. Plus, its not like you could go out and pick another up! The paint
work on yours looks stunning!

I think I mentioned it on the other thread but my QB also has a few gaps
along the shorelines. The gaps that I can see are just the ones visible
through the paint. Its possible there are more but the paint is not very
thick to begin with. If I ever get around to making a few mods and
repainting, I'll surly be adding filler in those joints. I am curious as
well, what joints were left open?

To new life!

Re: [RBW] daily post ur riv

2020-07-14 Thread christian poppell
Hi Patrick,

Tires are 35mm. 38mm tires fit but the pinch point is between the top of
the tire and the underside of the brake (Shimano BR-6500).

Saddle to bar drop is almost nil. I'd prefer around 3 cm as its hard to
stay on the hoods while climbing out of the saddle.

Two curious things about the bike are the placement of the pump peg and the
lack of a chain hanger. Its almost like the pump peg was placed with a
level top tube in mind. There's about 1cm of a gap between the top of the
pump and the bottom of the top tube. The rear seat stay also lacks a chain
hanger which I prefer when taking the rear wheel out.

Still getting used to the bike and dialing everything in. Indexing has been
a slight pain up front with a modern derailer and TA rings. If I had an
extra derailer, the front would be friction on the downtube. It works OK
for now though. Still getting everything sorted out.

Patrick, that Matthews is a nice bike and I'm sure with those wide tire's
its well suited to your area. Those 60mm tires would still be fun around
here in the hard packed fire roads.

[RBW] Re: Orange Ram Touchup Paint

2020-05-28 Thread christian poppell
Hey Ricky,

a good start would be checking out the Cyclofiend site for paint
suggestions:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/color.html

You're right, Testors doesn't quite have the range they used to in the past
but they do sell a reasonable amount of colors in small amounts that would
work well for touch ups. The funny thing about nail polish is the customer
base doesn't seem too interested in colors that would good on bikes as
well. If they made a color to match the ram, i might have to paint my
nails, good time to wear the cut off gloves! :)
Everyone else,

Joe Bell would say no if he wasn't interested in selling paint. In fact, he
might have a suggestion where to go searching for paint. Hes a professional
and has been in the business for a while, I'm sure hes had his fair share
of strange requests.

Rivendells general position on touch up paint is just to prevent rust, not
so much to perfectly match the existing paint.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33gojC_e5hU

I'm not looking for an exact match or perfection. Maybe something like the
Subaru tangerine orange touch up paint would do the trick. Ill be riding
the ram around looking for one to see if they match :)

Hi Gang,

You know when you're in the process of doing something and there's that
voice that says, "you should really do this some other way".

I put a small nick in the top tube of of my orange Rambouillet and I'd like
to touch it up. Its not big, but the top tube was somehow pristine. The
Cyclofiend site has a color from Testors but it is now discontinued. Has

Re: [RBW] WTB: 66 or 68cm Quickbeam frame set

2020-04-16 Thread christian poppell
I would agree that the cost of repairs is high if the frame in question was
a stock, in production frame. The Quickbeam however is a fairly rare bird
and I would argue that it has no contemporary in the current market,
especially in this larger size (66-68 cm). I bet the cost of the repair
would be less than a new custom frame built around the same Quickbeam
specs. In the end, the custom option might not have the same ride quality
of the Quickbeam you are trying to replace. This is possible with the
repair as well but there are far fewer variables.

With regards to brazing quality on these frames, I own a 64cm orange and I
can see gaps where the brazing material does not fill the lug to the
shoreline. This is visible on the head tube downtube joint (downtube
socket), and the bottom bracket (seat tube socket). Both areas are about
1cm in width at the shoreline. The DT/HT joint appears to have more filler
closer to the shoreline than the one at the BB. FWIW

[RBW] Re: Walking boots -- not entirely unrelated to cycling

2020-02-27 Thread christian poppell
FYI if anyone on the list were considering the Rossi boots.

I've been wearing a pair of Rossi Endura 301 for about three months now and
I have not been impressed. The sole was poorly glued on the right boot and
is now pulling away from the leather at the heel and outer sole. The back
of the boot is unlined which rubs the back of my ankle all day. I got some
thin calf leather and lined the inside heel which has helped.

Those things aside, they are more comfortable to stand in than my Dr Marten
Chelsea boots. The Docs are very thin with no arch support.

I purchased the Rossi because they are made an Australia and my assumption
was they would be higher quality. However, in the future I would purchase
Blundstones or similar. My fiance, who is a muralist, has them and they
have been durable and comfortable for her to wear all day painting.

FWIW & YMMV,

Hi Wyatt,
I've got a 62cm Orange Rambouillet mocked up with Compass Switch Back Hill
EL tires. The tightest location is at the chainstays with about 3mm
clearance each side. I can provide photos if you would like. The wide 650b

I broke my collarbone a few years ago. As a result, I got into ham radio.
My girlfriend and I studied and took the licence exam together. You could
spend a lot of money on gear and equipment but there are a few inexpensive
radios and many DIY projects that can be done inexpensively. There are
multiple facets of radio communication to explore. I'm currently working on
learning Morse code which has been a fun, brain bending adventure. I've
also joined Summits on the Air which involves hiking (or cycling) to
registered peaks, logging contacts, and getting points for the peak. Check

FWIW: I recently purchased the GK 700cx38. From the package, mounted with
tubes on DT R460 rims they measured 36mm @ 45psi. Three weeks later they
have stretched to an approximate 37.5mm :)

Useless data point. Took them on a mixed terrain 60 mile ride and they
still had the fuzzy vent sprue things along the center of the tire, front

I'm down for some food sharing as well, maybe we should start a spreadsheet?

[RBW] Re: New Wavie Bar Photos

2019-04-29 Thread christian poppell
Hey John,

I have Wavie bars on my Quickbeam with a 130mm stem and about 2cm of drop.
Bars are angled down about a degree or so. For comparison, I have 48cm
Noodles on a 100mm stem and about 3cm of drop, Shimano R400 levers (not
long reach)

The Wavies still feel pretty upright to me compared to the Noodle setup. I
would feel comfortable setting the Wavie bars on a bike that was smaller
than what I typically ride with drops.

I've ridden them around 150 miles so far.

Hope that helps,

You have a few quick ways to get some kind of multispeed QB/SO

*White Industries Duo/Surly Dingle*
Manual shifting, which you probably already have. I find that having the
multi speeds on one side of the wheel greatly reduces the amount of time it
takes to change gears. I can switch in just under a minute.

*Internally Geared*
Quickly searching on the internet shows a few people have gone this route.
Biketinker!

*120mm multi speed hub with a bolt on derailer tab*
Its possible even with the track ends to use a multispeed hub and a
derailer (see early Breezers). My QB even has the derailer cable routing on
the bottom bracket.

*Go full flames...*
Take a torch to it and make it how you really want it. Multiple
possibility's here...

I've pondered this question before and at the end of the day, I like the
Quickbeam for its simplicity...

[RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???

2018-06-05 Thread christian poppell
I purchased one from the fine folks at Rivendell shortly after I made the
initial post. Over the last week or so I have used it daily.

*Things I like (:*

   1. It is light weight!
   2. Seemingly better than a cable lock or a intricately wrapped and tied
   Johns Irish Strap
   3. I like that it is small and fits into my bag or on the bars.
   4. 30" of lock has been adequate for locking both the rear wheel and
frame around typical u-lockable pole shaped objects. When I use a U-lock
for the rear wheel, 30" has been more than adequate for locking the front
   wheel to the frame.

*Things I don't like ): *

   1. Ergonomics. I feel like the button is on the wrong side when pulling
the strap through the lock.I feel a little like i have to contort my body
to lock the lock, I think this is just from me not being completely
   familiar with the lock.
   2. The squishy silicon strap doohickey that keeps the lock wrapped on
itself. I got rid of it immediately. I just double coil the strap and lock
   it.

*Words of caution:*

I did manage to replicate the failure people had where the strap will pull
through the lock, even after the combination has been changed. I did this
by inserting the strap with the correct combination then stopping in
between ratchets. It was repeatable but required some care to achieve. I
discovered it shortly after locking it onto itself. From that point, I have
always pull tested the lock before leaving.

Overall, walking away after locking my bike with the Ottolock does not
leave me warm and fuzzy like a quality U-lock. However, I feel the security
of Ottolock does allow for what it is designed for which is quick trip
inside the store. It should prevent anyone with a pair of bolt cutters or
snips from quickly grabbing your bike and riding off.

Thanks everyone for your input!

[RBW] Re: Rim recommendations?

2018-05-25 Thread christian poppell
If you're considering the H PLUS SON take a look at the DT R460. Ive been
very happy with them. They are tubeless compatible and roughly the same
section as the Archetype. Primary difference I see between it and the
Archetype are that it has a pinned seam, 10 grams lighter, and has a $48.60
MSRP. They built up round and true for me (32h front and rear) with a very
minimal click at the machined brake track that went away after a ride or
so. I had Compass Steliacoom tires mounted and they mounted and dismounted
easily. I have not used them tubeless so no data point there. Stans
tubeless tape.

Edit: I wrote all of the above assuming the Archetype was much more
expensive than the DT. At $70.00 MSRP and a 10g extra, the Archetypes are
very comparable...

Any users of the improved Ottolock out there? I heard the first batch was

Rivendell is now selling them. Anyone pick up the updated lock? Is 30"
enough lock? I keep finding myself without a good locking solution for

[RBW] Re: Cheviot fat tires

2018-05-08 Thread christian poppell
Joe,

I've had the same issues mounting tires you describe. If you're using
tubeless compatible rims then you should be using tubeless rim tape. Its
slick and thin. Helps the bead seat better. Lubing the bead with some soapy
water then pumping them up to the max pressure will sometimes get them to
pop on. Also, pumping them a little then coaxing the bead into the groove
can work as well.

Good luck!

I second the Phillip method of tightening the chain. It's even possible to get
the chain too tight! Do it a few times and you'll get a feel for it. One
additional thing I do is to put a toe strap through the front wheel and frame
to keep it from flopping around. This way you can push forward on the bike to
lift it onto the front wheel. Hope that helps!

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam over Mt Tam

2017-09-01 Thread christian poppell
Thanks Phillip,

I think for me, riding alone has a lot of advantages. People seem to really
want to talk, and I don't have any pressure to be anywhere or to ride a
certain way. I met you and your gang out riding and was able to switch up
my plans without hesitation. I don't think I've ever met a stranger when on
a solo ride. Most of my conversations start around the bicycle and maybe
the fact that my appearance doesn't fit into what a typical cyclist in the
area looks like. I've met some really great and interesting people and
that's what I like about cycling is the conversations and exposure to the
world.

Also, here is a previous write up on a S24O outing on the QB:

2017-08-31 Thread christian poppell
Gearing up front is a Sugino Mighty Tour 110bcd double with 40/36 rings.
Rear is a Phil hub with a surly dingle fixed cog 21/17 on one side and a
ACS 17t freewheel on the other side. Using a 6/7/8 speed chain. Only use
the freewheel downhill. Gear combinations that work are 40/17, 36/17 and
36/21. Ill take some photos soon and upload them.

I purchased the frame from this list and rode it with a co-op gruppo
purchased for 90$. After a few months I built some wheels and dialed it in
a little to where it is now. Only change i want to make now are a little
longer stem and a front rack with lowriders. all of that will be soon.

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks everybody! It's a 64cm. I feel like I could go a size smaller as the
bars and the top tube feel pretty high at times but it works and I really enjoy
riding it. I'll be making a front rack for it soon. I might do a week long tour
on it sometime in the near future.

[RBW] Quickbeam over Mt Tam

2017-08-30 Thread christian poppell

Originally titled this as "Adventures in Single Speeding" but I'm not
really sure if single speed counts as I have at least three speeds. They're
just not super accessible while underway. Until I think of another term
I'll call it single speeding. Also, the account is very San Francisco
specific but I've tried to describe it the best that I could.

I was off the bike for about a week while visiting family in Florida. I did
get in a short ride that amounted to 8 miles and about 100' elevation
crossing two bridges. When I got back to California I decided to ride the
Quickbeam to the top of Mt Tam via railroad grade, then take Coast View
down to Muir Beach for a late lunch. From there I could take the headlands
dirt or the paved road depending on how I was feeling.

I got a late start Saturday morning. Ate a bigish breakfast and wrote a few
post cards. Swung through the post office on my way to bart and got stamps
to mail my cards. The BART ride was uneventful and I arrived at Embarcadero
station relatively quickly. I took my normal route through the city along
Embarcadero, branching off at North Point then over the hill to Fort Mason.
I Stopped at the Safeway in the Marina to get some snacks: bananas, bars,
cookie, and some cornbread. When I was leaving a woman with a slight accent
asked me if the way she locked her bicycle looked good to me. I showed her
the Sheldon way of locking (through the rear wheel between the rear
triangle) and we began talking. Her name was Marta and she is from
Barcelona visiting for a week. We talked about politics and other world
events for about two hours. Eventually we parted ways and I headed out
along Crissy field up to the bike path where there were swarms of tourists
on rental bicycles. I saw only one quick altercation where a road cyclist
was chirping at the tourists to get the F out of the way.

After a slow bridge crossing I dipped down in to Sausalito. I had to gently
tell a tourist not to use their phone while riding. It was really dangerous
moving through Sausalito. Lots of inattentive inexperienced riders with
heavy cross winds in the road. I was glad to get out of there.

Fighting a slight headwind, I eventually made it to Mill Valley and on to
Old Railroad Grade. I really wasn’t feeling too great on the ride up. I'm
not sure if it was the week off the bike or lack of food. I felt pretty
gassed. I stopped along the side less than halfway up and ate. After that I
felt a little better, but the whole ride up to West Point inn I had to push
myself. After the inn I was passed by a guy who was either riding an e-MTB
or he was the strongest rider I had ever seen. I’m fairly certain it was
the former but I didn’t see him again to ask. Eventually I got into a
rhythm near the top. I spoke to a guy with a nice Steve Rex road bike with
an older Campagnolo ergo group. Said he had it since the late 90's and
enjoyed it very much. It looked like a great bike.

*Quickbeam at the top of Mt T**amalpais*

Before heading downhill I switched into my freewheel and pumped up my rear
tire a bit to avoid pinch flats. I was cruising down and boosting off some
of the little berms on railroad grade. The last one I hit a little sideways
and almost lost it on the landing. Fun stuff.

Coasted past West Point Inn and down to Pantoll campground. At the
intersection I met a guy named Gary who has ridden in the area for a while.
He was physics professor that was living in China. His son is also in
physics and did his PhD in fluid dynamics. We talked for about an hour or
so about the Bay Area and riding.

*taken from the picnic table, SUPER FUN!*

I made it to the Coast View Trail in a heavy fog and light rain. Coast View
is one of my favorite rides in the area. It's not so steep that you're
constantly braking hard and the trail is a good mix of easy and
semi-technical riding, especially on a road bike with larger tires. I
pushed myself to go a little faster than normal on the trail as I felt that
there weren’t any others using the trail at the later hour (around 6:30pm).
Turns out I was right and I hadn’t seen anyone coming the opposite
direction since I left the top of Mt. Tam. I rattled my teeth out on the
bumpy sections and bunny hopped the water gates. I had a lot of fun and
even said it out loud a few times that the trail was awesome!

[RBW] Re: OT: Sewing your own bags?

2017-08-30 Thread christian poppell
I've made a few bags and a rain cape. Basting tape is invaluable to get
heavier materials to stick together, use bar soap on the needle to keep it
from gumming up. I gathered some info from the ultralight hiking forums. I
have found a few threads on making your own gear and they show the process
with good photos and descriptions. A good quick project would be a saddle
sack type bag. One piece of fabric, sewn and folded and sewn again with a
big long zipper. I usually make scale paper models of the bags I want to
make, then go to full scale and add a seam allowance where needed. This
gives the benefit of knowing how the piece will come together and in what
order, without the time and expense of material. I have also made full
scale items out of muslin before making the final. Again, its cheaper and
gives you experience with process of putting things together before the
final.

Enjoy that new machine!

2017-07-30 Thread christian poppell
Hi Patrick,

Have you tried just using flat pedals without straps? I use them on my multi
speed and fixed gear and have not had a problem with my feet flying off. On the
fixed gear, which sees a lot of offroad, slow cadence hill climbing, I am able
to pull on the upstroke by pointing my toe downward (also works in flip flops).
A differet technique but it does work.

I stood under the bride for a while until it got too chilly. it was after I

I took the highway route which I had not done before, feels scary facing
traffic on 101 separated by a chain link fence, low guard rail, and an

road next time. The ride on the trail through Ross and San Anselmo is
always nice. I especially like Shady Ln, even more when there is no

bar, and some bread. I was thinking that whites hill was a little closer so
I switched to my lower gear (36,21). Only when I started riding did I
realize it was much farther, especially when you're spinning 45 gear

slowed down a little bit. Finally I hit the hill, its not terribly long or
steep but it is a climb, especially with a load and riding a fixed gear in
flip flops. I reached the top and spun downhill to a little turnout next to
a raving where I switched into the high gear. From here, I rode through the

into images that should be painted, photographed, and cherished. I thought
about taking a photo but decided to take it all in and keep pedaling with
the slight downhill to Lagunitis.

I arrived in Lagunitas, home of the brewing company of the same name, and
jumped onto the Marin cross trail. I tilted the light back just a little to
capture any stray branches that were at face level. The ride was pleasant
and I didn’t see anyone on the trail. Come to think of it, I hadn't ridden
next to anyone since Sausalito!

(think xtracycle/big dummy). The other group parked at Lagunitas and rode
in by bike to score a site. I slept without a tent (don’t own one) and
listened to the raccoons quarreling down by the stream.

In the morning had a breakfast of banana, oatmeal, and earl grey tea. Bid
everyone farewell then headed to Pt. . Reyes Station. the Marin Cross Trail

Optimization is the enemy of opportunity. I've had more fun using the "wrong"
bike than using what would be considered the "right" bike. I think a 650b
atlantis in your size with the right tires would get you a lot of places. Heck!
You don't even really need knobbies unless its super muddy. I would sell all

Experienced shimmy for the first time ever going 17ish mph downhill with my

The fix was to put my hands on the bars and keep going. Cheap and

[RBW] Question: Quickbeam With Axle Nuts

2017-05-12 Thread christian poppell
I've got a Quickbeam and I want to put a Phil rear hub on it. I'm wondering
if anyone doesn't use a quick release on their Quickbeam? I'm a flipper and
a flopper, change the gears fairly often and prefer the quick release I
have on there now. So whats the general consensus from other manual gear
changers? Is using tools a problem when changing or do you prefer the tool
less approach?
Thanks,
Christian

ps: I've used a quick release on a fixed gear for 10yr+ so naysayers need
not say nay to FG QR :)

Eight speeds of nine, or nine speeds of ten works on a seven speed shimano
body. Still need to use the appropriate chain for the cassette.

You could also replace the freehub body to get 8/9/10 speeds. There are a few
that are not in tercompatible.

[RBW] Re: A post asking about posts

2017-03-29 Thread christian poppell
I think the Thompson posts are great but I perfer the Nitto on this bike. One
reason is setback and a limited amount of post. The other is that it matches
(lame excuse, whatever).

Here is my process for adjusting the campagnolo two bolt:
1 Use leather saddle with flexible skirt
2 Adjust front bolt by hand to approximately correct angle
3 Tighten rear bolt till tight
4 Test ride till you convince yourself it's at the correct angle

Thank you all!

[RBW] A post asking about posts

2017-03-28 Thread christian poppell
Seat posts. Im interested in two offerings from nitto. The s65 and the s83.

The question: Is the S65s angle infinitely adjustable?

Nothing, I mean nothin in this world drives me more mad than an ill adjusted
saddle. I swore off single bolt posts after purchasing a campagnolo nuovo
record but I am willing to give the S65 a chance if it is uber adjustable

Google maps has gotten me into trouble more than once.
Looks like a ton of fun though! Adversity makes life interesting!

[RBW] Re: S24o Kit Evaluation

2017-02-02 Thread christian poppell
Hey Justin, I just did some camping in Marin last weekend and this is what I
brought:

Cookware:
Alcohol stove. Made from a 12oz Hiniekin keg can. Quite possibly the greatest
thing I've ever made.
2 pots. Nesting snow peak ti. Used one for water and the other for food. I can
use the larger one as a lid.
Bike water bottle
Hydroflask. I like to ride with coffee. Only downside is it doesn't keep your
hands warm.
Plastic fork and spoon cause I forgot the real ones at home

Sleeping:
20° down bag. It probably got into the mid to upper thirtys in the early
morning. My feet were a little cold. I figure since I comfortably sleep Ina
house most nights of the year it's a pleasure to be mildly uncomfortable for a
few. Makes for a better experience. Plus I enjoy the stars.
3" sleeping pad. I perfer the inflatable variety as I am a side sleeper.

Clothes:
Pants
Extra pair of wool socks cause I like a fresh pair after riding all day.
Wool sweater
Rain jacket
I rode in shorts, tee shirt, wool socks, and approach shoes. The extra pair of
socks doubled over work great as gloves when your hands are frozen in the
morning.

I also had a pocket knife, headlamp, Bike tool kit, and a lighter. All of this
and food(except the sleeping bag and water bottle) fit in a Carradice Nelson
long flap.

Try to take as little as possible. See how far you can get with what you've
got. Think of it as undercamping. The most important thing is getting out there
and doing it without worrying about gear. You'll have a great time!
