I’m fine with wider rims, Tony. My hunqapillar will have Cliffhanger rear and Atlas front, QB has NoBS rims. For the riding I do, I consider a hearty rim essential, and wider rims maximize tire suppleness. I shifted my QB from 719s to the NoBS without noticable change (but the big change then

Deacon Patrick - Can you expand on your preference against wider rims? At what width (or weight) are you seeing diminishing returns? What rims are you running your Thunder Burts and Stielicooms? I've weighed going wider on my Saluki rims, currently sitting with A23's but I've got a pair of

Regarding wide tires: I agree that adding significant weight on the perimeter of the wheels is a good way to slow down both acceleration and handling, but I have to say that compared to the 360 gram 50 mm F Freds, the new-to-me Big Ones on the Matthews -- 440 grams!!! (well, I've seen them range

Hi Dave, Nice! I'm right near the start of the trail. My thought is to build up my Clem to ride during the winter on snowy trails. I'm not really sure how practical that is, but it will give me options for winter riding. I've got some use Maxxis Ardents coming that I'll try out, and thanks to

Thanks Keith. I ended up ordering a pair of 2.35 Vittoria Mezcal's, the "TNT" version (Tubes or No Tubes). Great reviews re: bite, transition from center to edge transition on turns, rolling resistance, puncture resistance, and relative quiet on pavement. Not too heavy, either. Once I have

I enjoy my Surly Extraterrestrial 29 x 2.5 tires for mixed surface riding. They are heavy on the scale, but roll very well. I use them on mixed surfaces with non-technical singletrack (e.g. MoCo trails here in Maryland). Since they don't have tall knobs, they'll fit in most 29er frames. I

Tom - regarding the 2x chainring wide/low configuration: It's not a problem at all - you just might need a longer bb spindle. That's what I have on mine, with a pant guard in the outer position. Fender needed notching, but tire is fine. One great thing about this setup, that I've never

David, I'm curious about this too, as I have a 59 Clem H arriving this coming Friday (though I don't need an aggressive knobby since fairly tame singletrack will only be about 30% of my usage .. the other 60% being divided by road and gravel). Skinnier tires on a 59 Clem make it look a bit
