Yes, quite wide. If you're putting them on a mountain bike 46s would be
fine. For a lot of time on the road, I'd definitely go narrower. The bars
really shine when you're in the drops on descents.

Thanks Tim. That helps a bunch. So 46cm Cowchippers are really quite wide. I
might have a monster cross in my future. I’m thinking I will flip a coin
between 42 and 44

Bill-
Salsa measures their bars pretty accurately; a 46 cm Cowchipper is 46 cm
between the center of the bar at the top of each drop. However, since the
bars flare outward throughout the drop curve, the brake hoods are already
at like 50 cm, and the ends of the bars are at like 54 cm.

I hope this isn't too tangential. Since you mention cowchippers, I'm in
the market for a pair and I'm guessing at width. Are 46cm Cowchippers 46cm
wide at the flared drops? Or are they 46cm at the hoods/ramps? Or
something else altogether?

I had the Cowchippers, 46cm, on my Vaya a while back and never really liked
the way they felt on that bike. They seemed too wide. Like wider than the
48cm Noodles on my LHT. I did like the way they felt in the drops on
descents. I was also entertaining thoughts of that bike being a go fast all
In terms of bars (not that you asked but you might enjoy them anyway). I am
really enjoying salsa cowchippers for this purpose. They work great with
the gevenalle shifter too.

I just ordered 1x10 Gevenalle shifters. They'll work with my current gear.
I've wanted a drop-bar large volume tire bike for a long time and I'm
hoping this will all come together nicely and satisfy that desire. I'll
post it up once it's done. While the only identifiably Rivish item on the
Use 1x gevenalle with 11 speed Dynasys XT der. works very well.

I have the gevenalle GX 1x short pull. They are great. Shift well,
convenient if you're on the hoods a lot. I recommend.
