It's strange, no doubt, to have a Hillborne and Bombadil and to put the drop bars on the Bombadil. But my logic is - the Hillborne is a great commuter and errand bike on Albatross and with the pannier rack. It's got a kickstand, too. The Bombadil may be stout but it's capable of just about anything, and with drop bars it feels pretty sporty and not unlike a 'monstercross' rig. Just prettier. Plans at present include: install the SON fender mount tail light I have around, add a M1-B front rack so I can run a larger bag, and swap the bright fender flap for a grey Riv one I have kicking around. I also have a full canvas camp setup using R-10 and Tubus Tara racks; looking forward to some more adventures on this soon!

Man, that big view is so cool. It looks like the rock displaced the trees,
but that is not the case. I could spend hours walking around that spot.
Fabulous photograph of the interaction of plants and the earth.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Bombadil on Ebay

2022-12-11 Thread Ryan
Looks slightly darker than the Bombadil, but still...a really nice subtle
yellow. I have seen some lemony yellow Rivs ...and I think that color was
an option when I ordered my Road in 2000, but I didn't like it as much as ,
say, these 2 iterations of yellow so I went with the Harvest Gold

Thanks for tracking that down, Chris!

I am dying to see how the fellow from Radavist will build up that
Bombadil ! I'm sure he'll post photos and a story once he does finish
building it

Such a SICK frame. That’s what I want next. Easily the most beautiful Riv

Re: [RBW] Re: [Repainted] Bombadil on its Archetypal Route

2022-09-04 Thread Daman Kumar
Jason, the link in your original message appears to be broken. In case
someone’s just discovered this thread like me, and wishes to read the ride
report, removing “2021/01/16” from the link fixes
it: https://www.jasonmytail.com/2022-01-15-bombadil-rebirth-ride/

The trick seems to work for the other reports on Jason’s blog as well.

there is no paint code available for it I gave some reference to the

teal-ish greens to olive greens, all metallic as that was a criteria.
 So
this green was chosen from a small sample and I honestly wasn't sure

John - Yeah to be honest, this build was with full understanding that I
might go back to either the MAP bar or the Wavie bar, but I wanted to give
these a proper try because I like the ergonomics of the bar end shifters vs
on a thumbshifter pod. Mind you it's kind of annoying how common it is to
bump the end of the bar and shift the gears by accident! It was certainly
a bit tricky to get the Moto's and the rack to play together and to be
honest I still need to do some tweaking - the brake rubs the underside of
the Y mount. The rear Motolite is rubbing the fender, too.

Eric - Happy to hear! Once I have it all dialed in I'll take some
detail photos for sure - right now, it would just highlight all the small
issues with the build haha. Leah mentioned I should email it to Grant so
maybe I'll send them both a note with a few photos!

[RBW] Re: [Repainted] Bombadil on its Archetypal Route

2022-01-16 Thread Jason Fuller
Thanks for the kind words all!

Brendon - my original plan was to use Jay's / Hunq green, but given there
is no paint code available for it I gave some reference to the painter and
he presented me with a pretty good range of color swatches from teal-ish
greens to olive greens, all metallic as that was a criteria. So this green
was chosen from a small sample and I honestly wasn't sure what it would
look like on the frame! I'm happy with it for sure though.

Takashi - yep! After stripping the clear coat (which is clear powdercoat
turns out! Much more robust than I expected, which ironically means if I
knew that I'd probably have left it raw...). He brazed the little adapter
on and drilled a small hole near the front of the lower TT. So far, I
haven't been able to get it to work which is alarming and upsetting. I
might enlist professionals soon!

Bill - I knew I enjoy the shape from my Twenty, and the reach is a bit
longer on the Bombadil but so far seems good! I have the Billie and
Albastache too and so far, the Albatross is my preference. I'd love to try
the Choco's too but would need a longer stem

Willet - wow, that means a lot! Thanks so much!

Once I have it all dialed in I'll take some detail
photos for sure - right now, it would just highlight all the small issues
with the build haha. Leah mentioned I should email it to Grant so maybe
I'll send them both a note with a few photos!

[RBW] Re: [Repainted] Bombadil on its Archetypal Route

2022-01-16 Thread Eric Marth
Another great ride report, Jason! Thanks for sharing your writing with us.
The

The bike looks fantastic. I was an advocate for maintaining the clear coat
but this looks incredible. Beautiful, subtle. Really well done.

For selfish reasons I'd love to see a detailed gallery with close-up shots
of breaks, pedals, hubs. How are those Bubbly pedals? They sure look nice
but how does the platform and grip compare to the Grip King Monarch/Gamma?

Looks like great riding abounds in your neck of the woods.

The picture on your blog with the moss-covered forest (take from further
away than the one you posted here) is really, really good! You should sent
it to Will, I'd wager he'd include it in an email update where others might
admire.

I was kinda surprised to see the albatross bars after the Aherne bars, how
did you like them on those trails? And how did the Pass & Stow rack play

[RBW] Re: [Repainted] Bombadil on its Archetypal Route

2022-01-16 Thread 'WilletM' via RBW Owners Bunch
For my money (quite literally, and too much of it!), Bombadil's build up to
be among the most beautiful bicycles ever created. The proportions and
functionality of Jason's Bombadil, along with the multitude of perfect
choices he made along the way during the build, put this particular bike at
or near the top of the heap in terms of iconic bicycle beauty.

If I were to ever to produce a glossy coffee table book of Rivendell frames
and complete bikes, the first image in Jason's posting would my choice for
the front cover. It is a perfect bike in a perfect setting, perfectly
photographed. Gonna be hard to beat, that's for sure!

Thanks, Jim, for the info and the terrific pics. You must have a lot more
weather and/or salty air where you live than I do (or maybe you just
actually get out and ride more?). Here in the Aspen area of Colorado, I
have a Surly Krampus that's been stripped of paint (and frame saver-ed but
no clear coat) and it has a nice patina on it but no rust. I don't ride it
all that much in slop, but it is my late-fall-early-spring ice and slush
bike, so it doesn't see all that many dry and sunny afternoons either. I
will keep your pic in mind, though, if I do decide to explore a raw finish
down the line.

It was an even better deal for me because I ended up the winning bidder on
ebay for frame/fork/hs/seatpost, which is what allowed me to build it up
with the decidedly un-Rivendellian build kit. Altogether, with the auction
price and the various new and used parts that I selected for the project,
it's probably in the $2000-2500 range out of pocket as it sits. It is
definitely one of my Grail bikes, and you are very unlikely to see it for
sale again until sometime down the road after a respectful period of
mourning following my funeral.

Yeah, that's odd. Maybe ask them about it? All the other parts seem

I just went over to buy something I needed from Rivendell, inspired by your
post.
They want $42 for a UN55 bottom bracket. A bottom bracket with an MSRP of $25
and a normal retail price between $15 and $20.

Building bikes designed to last a lifetime, like Rivendell does, is the
right thing to do--but it's not what pays the bills best. I wonder if it
wouldn't be in Riv's best interest to offer consignment used Rivendells /
trade ins for new frames in order to get a portion of the proceeds from the
sale of used Rivs - which basically sell themselves anyway!

[RBW] Re: Legolas, Bombadil, Saluki

2020-01-24 Thread S
Sorry for sidetracking this thread. Karl makes a good point.

Although the occasional $1,500-$2,000 frame purchase seems like a lot,
steady cash flow is actually what keeps businesses going.

Starting now, I am going to commit to ordering at least a few things from
Rivendell every month, instead of ordering from them every once in a while,
as I have been doing. I almost always have a bike build on the go and need
tubes, or a chain or cassette, etc. If you are on the west coast, shipping
from Riv is fast and cheap, so there's no good reason to buy these kinds of
things from anyplace else.

2020-01-24 Thread John A. Bennett
Fantastic idea, Karl!

Buying second, third, or fourth hand is a great way to conserve funds, but
if we always *only* do that, well, eventuallyno more Rivendell, and no
more Rivendells.

In an early Rivendell catalog ---No. 4, I think -- the brown one, in any
case --- there was a great line, maybe a quote, that went (and I
paraphrase)

"Buy from the fine folks who told you about the merchandise is the first
place."

That's a very rough paraphrase/translation.but it still has meaning.

Ponder the alternative for a guaranteed bummer.

Speaking for myself, I like supporting Rivendell and I have bought from
them over many years. I currently have two Rivendell frames, a Toyo and an

the time. Inevitably, some of the other frames I was interested in slipped
by.

Have you read the Legolas thread? Group member Brian Campbell got his
Legolas last year for $2,700:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/HyI-BnNcP3o

As Bill Lindsay -- who also bought a Nobilette Legolas for less than the
current Rodeo price -- explained: "The price difference is in paying Grant
to design a new bike. The Legolas design is done, so it’s much much cheaper
than a custom."

Thus, it's not unreasonable to suppose that you might be able to buy a
Saluki, etc, for Rodeo price. Maybe not, I don't know if Riv still has all
the lugs needed for the Saluki, but it's confirmed that you can get a

It will be interesting to see how Rivendell iterates the MIT frames. The longer

Yes, original Homer had different geometry. And even when the Homer first
came out, it was available in size 57 and up only, with 700c wheels. I
don't know if this changed later while still keeping the original
geometry.

I, too, would never spend $4,000 on a full custom, but I am intrig by the
fact that you can get standard sizes of some previous models, eg, the
Legolas, for $2,800. As I mentioned in the other thread, however, I am
waiting to see this year's new models before I decide whether to get a
semi-custom.

Agreed. Canti Saluki might be the perfect (lightly loaded) all-around bike? I
am wondering if the semi-custom deal (Rodeo price) mentioned in the Legolas
thread would work with the Saluki.

Jim, what a well-loved and distinctive Bomba. Before I bought my first Riv

impressive customer service. Wow!

[RBW] Re: 1st Bombadil on Treasure Island

2016-10-24 Thread Jim M.
No shuttle needed if on bike. But be careful riding down the hill to Yerba
Buena. There are some deep holes for storm drain grates that could send you
over the bars.

As to finding the path, if you're at MacArthur BART, just head towards the bay
on 40th street and you'll see signs when you approach Ikea.

So I think the patina is approaching corrosion stage, otherwise I would leave
it. It's an 8 yr old proto-Bomba, so I can live with getting a new clearcoat
every 8 years.

And Tammy the waffle lady also owns the bike shop. She had a waffle customer
with a flat, so she rode her bike to the bike shop and brought back tube, pump,
and levers, and then got back to cooking waffles.

According to one reviewer the waffle lady also runs the bike shop.

2016-10-24 Thread Patrick Kelly
If you get off bart at the west oakland station, you can then ride the "bay
trail" around over to the bridge. That portion of the "bay trail" is
interesting, some might say sketchy. But Middle Harbor Shoreline Park is
kinda interesting to check out as well. Take a look at the bottom portion
of http://baytrail.org/get-on-the-trail/map-by-number/oakland-to-albany/

For a few years I would stay in that area every time I went to the bay
area. I like biking over to jack london square to catch the ferry over to
SF.

[RBW] Re: 1st Bombadil on Treasure Island

2016-10-24 Thread 'Stephen Kemp' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like the way it is starting to go crusty.

You can't buy that kind of finish - it is special and has to be earned. In
the classic car and motorbike world people seem to be over highly restored,
immaculately presented examples and originality and patina (in Riv circles
you might call it beausage) are becoming more prized.

At some point it's a matter of preservation but I don't think you're there
yet. It sounds like you are apologising, as if you're somehow ashamed but
don't be. Be proud! Give it some though before you wipe away the history.

nice! love the black and white pictures of the bridge as well. itching to
go out now that it's open, never been to treasure island. Is it true that
you need to take a shuttle where the bridge meets yerba buena island? that
you can't cycle from the bridge to treasure island?

You will also see some evidence of Bombadil needing a refinish. It will be
out of commission for a bit while I get the rust removed and have it clear
