Smitty, I pulled the trigger on a big dummy and a Yepp Maxi. Already having a great time on it. SO much better than a trailer. Re: [RBW] Re: OT - Family Biking
I always enjoy Smitty's posts. Some of my favorites have been about riding with children. Riding with children is to me a wonder. After exploring our options - Dummy and others..., my wife and I went with a Joe Bike, a Portland assembled boxbike. It was great fun that passed too quickly. But the adventure continues, our daughters are now 7 and 10, and they are on two wheels of their own. We now ride the trails in a long line. I smile sometimes when I read the about the epic rides of others - a 100 km through somewhere... many of my rides are currently measured in blocks. I count myself as very lucky. I'd like to put a word in for having the kid(s) on the back of a tandem, either a regular sized one with a kid back or a bike friday (or MTB type tandem with a lower top tube in back, or if you have the $$ or get lucky on the internet, one of the amazing periscope tandems that are made for this very purpose. Like one of the other posters, I live in a hilly rural area; and I have been pulling my kid on a first a kidback, and tandem since he was 3 1/2; and he's been putting out reasonable pedal power since (from 10 months - 3, he was in a trailer). The added power from the child is very helpful sometimes, esp as he got heavier (now at 80 lbs and 10 years old, a sprinter esp on hills), but most importantly - early lesson in there is no free ride - even those few times where I said stop pedalling and I'll pull you up the hill, or we'll walk, or whatever, he saw the relationship between effort and benefit. We've all seen kids who expect everythng to be handed to them...how are they going to understand that they have responsibility if after being hauled around until they're 7 or 8, THEN they have to start riding up those hills? Whichever tandem we've used (and here's a link to some of them), they've all been great for carrying lots of stuff besides the kid; with cheap panniers, or even better, the wald folding grocery racks / big rack + basket up front, I've hauled 60 lbs of stuff, plus kid, no problem, although we do sometimes walk up hills (there are a lot of steep grades round here (western mass / Columbia County NY). We try to ride everywhere within 10 miles. http://flic.kr/s/aHsjE7mW43 Lights, good rain gear, lots of snacks, fun destinations in addition to the hardware, feed, and grocery stores. Oh, and hey, riv content - a. bikes are riv'd out as the expression goes b. if you look closely, there's a shot of my wife's glorius in grand central in front of the Bike friday loaded up. ron in western ma On Saturday, March 2, 2013 11:07:39 AM UTC-5, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote: My friend Madi had two kid seats on a regular bikehttp://familyride.us/2011/08/02/new-big-bag-new-small-basket/. [RBW] Re: OT - Family Biking
Thanks for posting this Smitty...I have enjoyed reading several family riding blogs each one taking me back to the early days of family riding as I am sure is the case with some of the other old folks here. We really didn't have much in the way of resources or products to carry our kids...just thishttp://www.mudguardsandinnertubes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/il_fullxfull.278031558.jpg. I remember returning from SE Asia and feeling like I was in a diferent world when returned to KU for grad school...there were bikes everywhere, when just four years earlier there were only a small handful of us. When Cannondale came out with the Buggerhttp://www.mudguardsandinnertubes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/cannondale_1980_catalog_145.jpgin the earlier '70s things started to change, we bought one right away and soon had a small group of young families who loved to ride like us joining us on weekend bugger rides. We were all hopeful that some day moving around by bike would not be sen as an oddity but rather a normal and sensible way of travel. Our kids had the same sense of excitement as we pulled them around behind us as I have read about other families with their long tails. All of you young families are doing more in your everyday kid and cargo carrying errands to demonstrate how to *Just Ride*, hopefully the momentum will continue to build, I'd really like to see the results in my life time. Keep it up and remember it really boils down to Grant's fundamental thesis that riding is all about moving ourselves under our own power and enjoying it in the process. Thanks for indulging me in my memories it is heart warming to see how far we have come. On Saturday, March 2, 2013 7:07:36 PM UTC-6, Savvas wrote: Andy, Nice blog article and nice thread. Thanks, Smitty. Since we currently spend around $60 a month on gas (less longer trips), there isn't a lot of savings to eek out there. This would mostly be expanding to new horizons, both on local outings and on camping trips. The downside to a longtail is we ideally need it to fit on a rear trailer hitch rack and not stick out. That's part of the huge attractiveness of going with a Riv with two kid set up. She made it work and could cram an impressive amount of stuff on there but she eventually got a Big Dummy (frame + rack + fenders all powder coated pink). 650b would work fine on a free radical... just use disk brakes and the 700c spacers... or improvise your own spacers. Or go 650b front and 26 rear then get different size tires to make the outside diameter match. If yer wife wants to haul kids on a regular basis, she'd be better off getting an actual longtail. It could be sold in several years and she could get a sparkly new BF when the kids are on their own. Or buy the BF with the gas money saved from her riding the longtail everywhere 'cause she loves it so much. my 2 cents. Nice post, Smitty. I like your Nitto Big Rack child-seat mod. (I assume kiddos like it? Are the pieces zip-tied on?) I can't trust my not-quite 3 yo son to hold on, but maybe I'll get to work on collecting and building the pieces for when he's ready. I enthusiastically endorse the front seat. I use the Yepp Mini, which works great with quill stems. (There's an adapter for threadless, but maybe that's not relevant for this group.) The Yepp has a nice quick release (with key lock) and optional windscreen, which sounded dumb to me initially, but enabled us to ride comfortably in cool and cold weather. (When you're not pedaling and just along for the ride and exposed on the front, it gets cold... go figure.) The front seat means he has access to the handlebar bell, and it brings smiles to all the folks on the sidewalks who see and hear us coming. And we always stop to look at the brook and hear the running water (at his request). For us, riding is a much different experience from driving, and by different, I mean better. --sho On Friday, March 1, 2013 11:19:27 AM UTC-5, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote: This is somewhat OT but the pics are full of stuff from Riv... Great post, Smitty! I just got back from taking our three oldest sledding. My Hunqa hauled the sled, strapped long tail style, and our 3-year old on the back rack. Worked great! We'd love to be car free. The current obstacles to that are a narrow (no shoulder), busy canyon highway between us and weekly shopping (though the ride is only 8 miles one way) and when we go camping afar. The good news is our driving is way down, and an Xtracycle EdgeRunner is in our future. I read this when it was posted on Path Less Pedaled Facebook page, totally didn't put it together that it was THE Andy Smitty Schmidt. Great stuff! My wife and I have been car free for one year. I would add that having bikes that you love significantly helps with the transition! She had a Jamis Commuter which is an okay little bike, but is really more for like 1 mile excursions on fat land. I surprised her with a Betty Foy for her bday, and she is much more into riding than she was in the past! I was a bit worried that getting her a BF was a homer bowling ball present, but she was blown away and loves it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Totally dynamite. There were major benefits to moving up to the top of the East Bay Hills, but doing so made it much harder for my wife and kids to get anything done on their bikes. We love living in a quiet, low traffic, and scenic place. But my fourth grader sometimes says I love our house, but it would be perfect if we lived on a flat street so I could ride my bike more. Our family rides are a major highlight, but we have to load bikes in the car to do it. It's paradise for me, because I'm already at the doorstep of the hills and trails, but for the rest of the family, that huge hill poses a major barrier.
