[RBW] Re: Sew own frame bags?
I made mine using X-PAC from rockywoods.com, 1/4 closed cell foam from eBay, and cheap remnant ripstop from Joann's. 3 wide, no flare at front. The ripstop formed a liner around the inner perimeter, and the foam was sandwiched in between. The foam is important as it keeps things from rattling against the top of the downtube, and provides nice structure. I also sewed a false floor in the bottom triangle that separates in the middle. You can expand or contract the sides of the bag with this. Enjoy the Krampus and post pics when the bag is done! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Sew own frame bags?
Every bag maker I know (OK, both bag makers I know) are big into prototyping. So, if I wanted to sew my own bag, I would plan on my first shot being a prototype that will certainly be thrown away. With that in mind I would guess on the material, with my focus on it being cheap and easy to work with. Based on what I learned in prototype 1, I'd then decide whether I was ready to go on to Prototype 2 or move straight to Final. As you know, prototype 1 for me is always corroplast and gaffer tape. The added advantage is that my prototype unfolds and becomes my pattern. The two bag makers I know are Ely Rodriguez of RuthWorks, and Phil Woosley of Loyal Designs. Once I decided on a material, I'd try to buy it from them. If you want an introduction to either of those guys, Anne, let me know and I'll hook it up. I'm sure they'd both be happy to give you free advice. Bill On Monday, January 13, 2014 10:12:09 AM UTC-8, Anne Paulson wrote: I ordered my new Krampus next week. Night blue pearl. Re: [RBW] Re: Sew own frame bags?
Thanks for that link, Stephen. It's terrific, lots of good info. I surfed through the links. It's clear that even without having sewn a frame bag, or even touched a frame bag, I know more than many of the posters, because I know how to sew. Here is my pro tip for people who want to sew packs and related items: You think you need a stronger sewing machine. Probably not. You need a better needle. Use a 100 Jeans to sew heavy material. Oh, and for any kind of sewing, change the needle for each project! Re: [RBW] Re: Sew own frame bags?
I did look at the Revelate Designs, but they do not seem to have a Krampus-specific frame bag. They do have bags designed for Trolls, Ogres and Pugsleys though. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Revelate seat bag, though. But I was deeply unimpressed with the Revelate advice about using their seat bag with a Thudbuster: file down one of the bolts on the Thudbuster or it will wear through the bag. IMO, if a manufacturer knows that a bike part will wear through their bag, they should reinforce the bag rather than telling users to take a file to their bike. As a fellow sewer who has admittedly never made a bag from scratch (though I do love taking them apart and altering them), might I suggest the Denier Diamond Ripstop http://www.seattlefabrics.com/nylons.html#Diamond Ripstopfrom Seattle Fabrics? Ripstop will give you the strength without the weight penalty of a thick coated Cordura, and with the benefit of being easier to sew, i.e. you can get away with using a 14. Or if you're after a lighter, laminated material, here's Dimension-Polyant 21http://www.rockywoods.com/Fabrics-Kits/Dimension-Polyant-Fabrics/Terrain-X-Pac-Laminated-Ripstop-Fabric, which is what Revelate uses for their frame bags. Re: [RBW] Re: Sew own frame bags?
Note that Revelate, and others, use the Denier Diamond Ripstop for the panels of the frame pack (the big pieces), but they use something a lot tougher for the gussets (the side pieces that go along the tubes of the frame). Ripstop is not so abrasion resistant, and those gussets are rubbing against the frame with every turn of the wheels. I was just at my LBS to drop off my touring bike because, umm, ding in the rim -- yes, that's why I want bigger tires, so I can ride without getting dings-- and I was able to get a good look at a Revelate Tangle pack and a Revelate Viscacha seat bag.
