Definitely Grand Bois Cypres or Grand Bois Extra Leger. Cypres have been amazing tires for me the past three years. Comfortable and only one flat riding on mix of Chicago city streets, suburban streets and roads, paved and lime stone paths. Bought a set of Extra Legers this year and Cypres under the so far incorrect notion the Extra Leger may be too frail for my riding. The Cypres ride is sublime, Extra Leger other worldly. Congratulations Curtis. It's a wonderful bike. I bought one recently and went through the same anticipation/anxiety as I waited for it and then built it up. Which size did you get. A 650B or a 700C? I picked up a 56cm 650B and put Hetre tires on it. I've taken on some former railroad beds filled with loose rocks and was pleasantly surprised at how stable it was with drop bars. I've been riding my AHH for about 10 months now. I started out with Jack Brown Greens and swapped for Little Bens a few months ago. Curtis, congrats on the new bike. You're gonna love it. Tire choice for the Hilsen can be tough given the range of tires. Since you just dropped a bundle on a very nice bike there is always the question of what the check book looks like. If there's something left, then the next best thing you can do is treat yourself to really good tires. I used Pasellas and Tservs for commuting but wouldn't recommend them for joy riding. The JBs give a very good mix of performance, comfort and protection. I run the Grand Bois Cerf on my Ram and have loved the performance, with no flats. Most of my rides include some dirt and some bad chip and seal, so I certainly don't baby them. I would bet the larger size on the AHH would be a really good choice. Thanks for the advice. The bike is a used AHH that was recently put up for sale on this site. The price and size was right and I had been looking for a few months. I think that I will have to try a few types of tires to find what works for me. I appreciate the recommendations and will follow the advice give here. So there is a Southern California group? How fun it would be to ride with a Riv type group. I do a lot of backpacking and would like to do some bike packing. I got mine about 4 months ago, so as other's have said your reaction is completel normal :) As far as tires go, I originally had the 35mm Marathon Supremes, but recently switched out the the Jack Browns, Blue in back and Green in front. A very underrated tire is the Performance Bike shop's Forte Metro 700x35 with or w/o kevlar strips. Yeah, cheap store brand tires right ? HaH ! Think again !! There's real psychological game that one often assumes a more expensive tire MUST be better than one that is cheap/-er. Here's a real good example. Performance sells a tire called the Gotham for $16. It's made by Panaracer and sold with their names, sells for $40 ! Some people will buy the same thing with a higher price tag just because it's more expensive ...lol. Hah ! So while the Metro tires may be only $15 , don't let that fool you, they grip well, have low rolling resistance and are supple feeling to me. Maybe they are not a Grand Bois or whatever maybe they are ... lol. I'm starting to be antsie about my rain gear arriving, and it doesn't ship for 2 more weeks, then it has to swim here from Scotland. I'm pretty sure my family was ready to send me out bikepacking without the bike I was so nuts waiting for my Hunqapillar. Yeah, hankering for quality gear you only have to buy every few decades or a lifetime is normal, if you're smart enough to save for and purchase such gear. It never seems to come in a way that satisfies instant gratification. Part of the craftsman ethos, I suppose. Grin. I can't see cheaping out on tires, personally. I think the piece of mind that comes with riding on quality rubber is worth it. Overpaying for nothing is silly, admittedly but getting the right tire can make or break the ride and feel of a bike. Your reaction is normal. You're in luck SoCal has many great places to ride and IMHO East county S.D. has a lot to offer. I particularily like rides through Ramona , Julian and the Laguna Mountains I'm actually planning on doing a S240 this Summer in the Laguna' with my Brother. I lived down there for about 15 years and most of my Family is down there. If I had just one set of tires to buy in 650b then it's the Fatty Rumpkins: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t105-10086.htm unfortunately no one makes a knobby in 650b with a width between 38 to 42 mm. But I have taken them on hardcore single track and jeep trails. The Schwalbe's are a favorite for many as their pretty durable. Hi Curtis, I live in North County (Carlsbad) and also ride with the SoCal Riv group that Hugh mentioned. I'm most familiar with North County as I've only lived here about 18 months. There are some nice areas to ride north of Escondido to Rainbow and the Rancho Santa Fe area. There a lot more choices for 700C tires,if that is what you are getting, depending on you if ride mostly on pavement or like dirt roads mixed in your travels. Curtis: Congrats on the new bike. These guys will overwhelm you with great tire suggestions (which can lead to lively discussions) but my advice is run what you brung. Mostly this works but was sub-optimal on last weekends Loch Leven sand / gravel / rock sections. Pay attention if David mentions knobbies. My Atlantis is currently shod with 40mm Vittoria Rando Hypers which ride nice but proved a bit light for the loose stuff. With Mike in Carlsbad me in southern Orange County, do I sense a Fallbrook - Escondido - Elfin Forest - ??? loop or perhaps Mt Palomar in the future?
