Re: [RBW] Stolen in East Bay: Grey Saddlesack (large) + brooks B17 saddle (honey)

2016-04-03 Thread David Stein
Yeah bike theft is so well organized in urban areas and the Bay Area
specifically (to the point where a local nextdoor post in Oakland was
suspicious of people following riders on nice bikes to their home to break
in later and steal). Once you get to smaller cities I can't imagine that
bike theft is anything other than a crime of opportunity, something quick
and easy to sell at a pawn shop for some quick cash as a one off. I doubt a
common thief in Knoxville even knows what a Brooks saddle is.

https://rockridgeca.nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=23342811

Text paste for those that don't have a nextdoor account or if link doesn't
work:

"Just an FYI, twice now while working in my front yard at Forest and Boyd
Ave. I have witnessed the same guy on a bicycle following at a distance,
another cyclist riding what appeared to be a very high end bicycle. My
thought is that this guy hangs out around the college area until he spots
someone riding a very expensive bike then follows them home to get the
location of his next bike theft. You would be well advised to look over
your shoulder as you approach your home to make sure your not being watched
/ followed."

2016-04-03 Thread Sean Kline

Thanks. Those locks in the Kickstarter campaign look elegant. I wonder how
strong they are.

I have pitlocks on my (and my partner's) wheels and seat posts. Sadly, I
actually bought Allen bicycle bolts at Missing Link bike coop in Berkeley 6
months ago, but the Allen key stripped the bolts...or more accurately, I
stripped the bolts using the key while I was tightening them just a little
too much, which didn't seem like that much. So, I then decided to go with
wax and ball bearingsa little too late.

Leaving our two Rivs outside for 120 minutes already broke my ~20-minute
rule, but I was foolishly convinced that all of the foot traffic where the
bikes were would deter. I know better and 99% of the time use the growing
number of secure bike parking options across the Bay Area.

In a marginally related note, I'm just returning from the Big Ears Festival
in Knoxville, TN. The weekend pass for this cool festival included free
bike rental from the Tennessee Valley Bike Shop. The shop owner told me
that virtually no one uses U-Locks, as theft is just so rare. True enough—I
saw a lot of weak cable locks around town. One of the shop employees even
leaves his bike out without a lock at all.

Sigh,

Yes—I think you're probably right Patrick.

I am 90% sure the brown B17 in this photo from a current Craigslist ad is
my saddle:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bop/5520958175.html (and screenshot
attached for when the ad goes down, in case anyone is looking for their
saddle)

However, I am not sure what the best course is, give I have photos of my
saddle on my bike from a distance only and I would need to pretend to be a
buyer. I have a call in to the El Cerrito Police on this.

I'm curious to see if my SaddleSack appears in an ad. Hope you can get your
panniers back Erin.

2016-03-28 Thread Patrick Kelly
I'm sorta guessing that the reason they took the bag was because it
was attached to the saddle. It's known that you can resell brooks
saddles for actual money, whereas I doubt your off-the-shelf bike
thief would be able to sell a canvas saddle bag. So, I'm guessing that
it was easier to take the bag, than to leave it. I.e., easier to
detach from the bike once the saddle was free, than to detach from the
saddle. Amiright?

Dave: there's nothing obviously special about the bag--the leather was
waxed, but it was still in new-ish condition. I received the bag

So, I cut rough slits for this purpose myself. It's wasn't the most elegant
