[RBW] Re: Clem Presale is over.

2015-10-12 Thread Wayne Naha
I hope undorky. Perhaps geeky? I don't know, except that I'm about to pop
from waiting! As I've spent time looking at the various guises of the
Clem/Clementine, the 'ugly bike' concept that was discussed at their
introduction becomes more clear. They're not ugly, of course, maybe
'gangly' or 'awkward' or 'a frame only it's mother could love.' I think
our Clem's inner beauty shines forth brightly. But to those who are not
able to appreciate the massive functionality, versatility, and practicality
built into this frame, the appearance of the bike will naturally act as a
repellant, keeping away all who would argue the merits of a crabon fork.
It would seem that 'to know the Clem is to love the Clem,' but you are
going to have to look beyond any lack of curb appeal.

Hahahaha, Bike size is one of my biggest fears with Riv. I'm about the same
size as Grant, so you'd think it wouldn't be an issue, but like you, I seem
to fit 2 sizes on every bike they make. The Clem is an exception. I
fit right in the middle of the 52 size range. I'd guess that 59 Clementine
in the Blug is set up for someone over 6'-5"?

[RBW] Re: Clem Presale is over.

2015-10-10 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
The Cheviot also only comes in three sizes. I am getting a 52 Clem(entine).
I don't think it's a matter of "making the 52 work," despite the fact that,
at 5'10" and with a seat height around 74cm, I normally ride 58-60cm
frames (I do tend to set my upright townie rides 1-2cm lower, legs just
seem to like it that way). Because the frame itself is already designed to
get bars high, you are starting from a different base point. The design of
the frame makes the bicycle work for a wider range of riders. Note also the
generous overlaps between sizes. I could just as easily ride the 59,
according to the Clem brochure. Arggh. Critical Decisions to Be Made. Life
is full of them.

Perhaps somewhat ironically, with the 52cm, I will be showing more like
what is these days considered the norm in seat post exposure, rather than
the fistful/French fit on most of my bikes. Regarding the handlebars, I
suppose the stem will be a bit more exposed, but, again, due to the design,
not much more than on my regular bikes. As to what is dorky, these days
when I see a non-lean, maybe a bit less than graceful rider in full pro kit
pedaling $6000 dollars worth of skinny-ass bike down the road going nowhere
and back, dorky is a handy adjective to have lying around. Sporting civvies
astride my black Clem(entine), I will cut a proletarian, convivial figure
as I go about my chores, pleasures, and visitations.

By way of intro, I am a long time iBob member, formerly of NYC, now
residing in the Hudson Valley. For a little while in the early nineties I
published a regional cycling publication. For a little while in the early
aughts I published a cycling website. I ordered a 52cm black Clementine
when a few became re-available. Many of my bicycles are festooned with 1-5
items purchased from Rivendell (not including clothing worn while on a
bike). I've never owned a Rivendell, though I came close once when I almost
traded a plum-colored Japanese Bridgestone Atlantis for an orange Rambouillet.
The P.C.J.B.A. eventually made its way to Walnut Creek, and into a Riv
Reader from what I understand.

I am not a Riv fan boy, but I do confess to having one bicycle with just
the tattered remains of handlebar tape, and I use a dab of regular soap on
my pits in lieu of deodorant (thanks for the tip, GP!) I also believe long
chainstays will be more useful during the zombie apocalypse than 7/4/7 top
tubes. But best to have at least one or two of each meanwhile.

Although I have kind of fallen for my latest commuter build, a sky blue
1979 Le Tour mixte, (Riv items; mirror, handlebars, tail light, two fish
water bottle holder [on ocassion], back o' bike bags in gray) and I am
generally not a new bicycle kind of guy, I am completely stoked to get my
mitts on my Clementine.

Having a bike with a very low top tube, I can testify to one reason to
get the top tube right up there: frame bag space. I love my Surly

2015-08-27 Thread Wayne Naha
Personally, I am going to live with this bike, and ride it a good while
before contemplating any upgrades. By that, I mean replacing replacing any
of the original components with different items. Because I do plan to
accessorize right away with a Pletscher rear rack, fenders, water bottle
cage, and a bell. But as for replacing things existing on the bike, I'm
gonna hold off on that until I get a good feel for what is already there.
For me, a lot of the decision a matter of expense. Buying this bike did
rather stretch the budget. Also, I want to see how good a job the Riv
folks did at spec'ing the bike out. I'll bet it works out very well.
Though, having said that, I do have a lonely Brooks saddle kicking around
that place that will be installed post haste. :)

Like in construction, It is very rare for a new bike project to be completeted
early!
It did happen when I was living in Berkeley around 2009, when a truck blew up
and melted a section of the 580(?) coming off the bay bridge. They had a huge
financial incentive for finishing early and a huge penalty for finishing late.
It turns out money is a good motivator for a business, sometimes!

I'm not banking on anything before Thanksgiving.

Keeping expectations low,

[RBW] Re: Clem Presale is over.

2015-08-21 Thread Surlyprof
Depends on how you intend to ride. I found the Sam and Clem to be pretty
different bikes (both fantastic). I love my Sam more than any bike I've
ever owned and can ride it as a road/club ride bike or a trail bike (with a
wheelset swap). I could see setting up a Clem as a really fun trail bike,
commuter, rambler, errand and town bike but I couldn't see joining a club
ride on it. That didn't seem like what Clem wanted to do when I tried it
out. If I could have two Riv's I'd have a Rodeo for roads and either a
Hunq or Clem for trails and town. But, since I can only swing one, the Sam
has been a very, very happy medium.

I hope they deliver the bikes well before Thanksgiving! It will be hard
enough waiting until Halloween.

It did happen when I was living in Berkeley around 2009, when a truck blew
up and melted a section of the 580(?) coming off the bay bridge. They had a
huge financial incentive for finishing early and a huge penalty for
finishing late. It turns out money is a good motivator for a business,
 sometimes!

I'm not banking on anything before Thanksgiving.

 Keeping expectations low,

Will they actually take until late October or can we hope for an earlier
date? Anyone have experience with Riv timelines?

Glad to see they sold out. Went into the store to check out a Clementine
for my wife, we road them around, she was sold and insisted that I get
a Clem for myself.

2015-08-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
That is exceedingly good, since their biggest problem as a business is
cashflow. Their Taiwan suppliers want their money up front. Now that
shipment 1 of the Clems is pre-sold, Riv should have the money on hand to
pay the supplier the moment the shipment is ready. That's great for them.

Really good to hear! I was a bit worried because it seemed like they were
(and still are) taking a big gamble with the whole Clem/Chev/Appa push in
place of their regular framesets and in-house builds. I'm glad it's
working out for them and I can't wait to see people's Clems. I still wish
they would go back to selling framesets.
