Re: [RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?
the hub/wheels were on the SOMA mixte bike - now on the Lynskey road Ti bike w/vertical dropouts + used SURLY chain tensioner - had to spread dropouts a little (130-135) fit better than the horizontal on the SOMA. Very happy with the results . NOW looking for different handlebars , have NITTO B352 North Road bars on it now. -Original Message- From: Tom Allingham To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Fri, Aug 10, 2018 9:41 am Subject: [RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ? Charlie -- I have a Rohloff on my Riv Bombadil. You're welcome to ride it -- happy to take it up to your place for you. I love it -- it's everything that's advertised. The setup took some finagling, but it's rock solid once successfully installed. Needs a chain tensioner, obviously, with the vertical dropout on the Bombadil. I used a Paul Melvin tensioner, and it works great. Here's a pic: https://flic.kr/p/e3YSiD I won't be back in Wilmington for a month or so, but happy to hook up then. [RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?
I have a Rohloff on my Jones LWB Plus. The bike's main purpose is bikepacking. I'm happy with the setup. I may end up dropping the gearing down to have the low be lower than officially sanctioned. I find that I use gear 1 way more than gear 14. On Monday, August 6, 2018 at 1:04:01 PM UTC-7, Charlie wrote: > > Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ? [RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?
I had a Riv Simple One fitted with a Rohloff. Generally, I'm happy with it. The biggest advantages are the uniform gear steps and the low, low gear, which allows one to feel he/she could climb a tree. I have it outfitted as a typical Riv upright with fenders, etc. The Simple One has a track rear dropout. As a result, it takes some real effort to change a rear flat. Would I do this again? It was an experiment of sorts -- I wanted a Riv with a Rohloff and have one. My other ride is a Homer, which is my ride of choice. Would I do this again? Probably not with the availability of 1x11. Also, I would make sure the rear dropout was better suited to a Rohloff. The only other issue I have with the Rohloff is the shifting hesitation as I move from the higher to lower or lower to higher gear ranges (the Rohloff has two sets of gears). Still, as virtually all Rivs, it rides beautifully. On Monday, August 6, 2018 at 4:04:01 PM UTC-4, Charlie wrote: > > Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ? [RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?
I have a Rohloff on my touring bike (Salsa Marrakesh). I have had the Rohloff since late 2014, and very happy with it for touring. I have done multi week tours with it every year, and occasionally use it for commuting too. Being able to shift while stopped is a big advantage on a heavily loaded bike. I can also shift quickly to lower gears quickly while riding when needed. I'm a big guy (220+ lbs) and carry heavy loads, and the hub has been trouble free.
