Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-13 Thread Ryan Fleming
Well, very impressive

And I have been quite worried about the news of the annual wildfire scourge
in northern California; devastation sounds appalling and from what I hear ,
these fires were the worst . I hope California RBW ers stay safe. So
thanks for updating us about that, Bill. Unfortunately , I guess this is a
dry time of year in a state that is quite dry as is evident in some of the
photos I see.

As you may know in Canada , in BC and last year Northern Alberta we have
had some horrific fires. My heart grieves for those folks whose homes and
lives are threatened.

Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
This has been my first week back at work. I had gotten quite comfortable
with not working.

8 bikes were in the books as of October 5 last week, and I was primarily
riding my "Doublespeed" over the weekend. I did a ~30 mile hilly ride on
that bike on Monday, the first really bad day of the California wildfires.
I planned the ride to get just over 200 and I took the "finishing photo" of
the bike:

Starting with bike #1, I got in the habit of taking a gratitude shot of the
bike posing in a memorable spot on the UC Berkeley campus. Maybe I'll do a
little photo-essay of all of them when I'm finished. Anyway, I got home
and uploaded my Strava data and found I'm not at >200 miles, but only 198
miles on the Doublespeed. So, I'll run some quick errand soon to finish
that bike up. That will leave me with just bike number 10 to finish up the
challenge. Bike #10 is my Rosco Bubbe Road bike, whose primary role is my
daily commuter to work. So things have fallen right into place. I'll
easily accumulate 200 miles over the remainder of October with my daily
work-commute and it'll all be done.

The California Wildfires that are still blanketing the entire Bay Area with
smoke have caused San Francisco Randonneurs to reschedule the Marin
Mountains 200k. That event will happen on October 28th instead of
tomorrow. I hope I can maintain my fitness sufficiently without doing
anything hazardous in this bad air. For a couple reasons, the delay might
help me out. I just invested in a new pair of cycling shoes, and so I'll
have time to break those in and make sure they are dialed. I also finally
invested in a set of prescription sunglasses for riding, but they haven't
come in yet. The delay will allow me to receive them and likely use them
on the 200k.

On the weight-management front I've lost 8lbs, and would like to lose
another 7.

So, it's all good (except for the smoke in the air, and the stupid having
to work thing)

Towards my preparation for the Marin Mountains 200k, I pre-rode the second
half of the course today, which was really fun. The highlights were the
Inverness Ridge Trail and Bolinas Ridge Trail and the near perfect

Strava does monthly distance challenges and a monthly climbing challenges.
You can earn "badges" that document your accomplishments. I've been joining
those challenges during this time off of work. As a fleeting moment of
glory, as of right now, I'm 19th in the United States for climbing in

I heard Bill saying something very different. That to rank them diminishes
them and the rides on them and himself because they are all inherently

Tony asked which bike I would try to take on PBP if it were next week.
I'll answer that a little bit obliquely by saying that I'm planning on
doing the traditional San Francisco Randonneurs 2018 SR Series on my Samuel
Hillborne. So, if PBP was next week, I suppose I would do PBP on my Sam
Hillborne. Whether I can complete an SR Series in 2018 is unknown to me,
and if I can, I expect to become a lot smarter about what bike I should use
for a 1200k.

My two-speed singlespeed is a custom Gunnar that I bought second hand. The
original owner spec'd this custom to be like a Samuel Hillborne, and it
is. It's got a 130mm rear end with a Phil single speed hub. I'm running a
16/19 White Industries DOS ENO freewheel. The crankset is a 110 bcd, and
I'm running a 38 and a 35. So I have two gears with one wheel position.
38x16 and 35x19.

Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-04 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Bill,

+1 and agreed with all of the people who have thoroughly enjoyed the
reports and the pictures! It has been great to see the bikes and the great
places you have to ride. I especially enjoyed hearing how well the Rosco
Bubbe step-through fit in as it is always very cool when experiments and
trying different things works out so well. It also inspires me to try and
create a few more structured goals and challenges here, though it's a
little late in the season for too much. That said, staying on the bike as
late into the season as possible and riding daily as long as the weather
holds will be a good start. There is still time for some good, long rides
and I will be taking that challenge to heart.

Anyway, thanks for the posts, the pictures, the stories!

Matt asked for some kind of ranking one through ten, which is not going to
happen. That would only make sense if all ten of them had the same intended use
with similar objectives and expectations so you could say which one delivers
best. There’s only two bikes in my fleet with the same basic intended use and
that’s my two Black Mountain road bikes. One is at my house and the other is at
my mother’s house. Even then I don’t feel good about calling one better than
the other. There’s more than one way to enjoy a bike. The variety in my fleet
is the best part of my fleet.

Bill your 10 bikes X 200 mile saga has been very interesting to read and
quite motivational to me...I'm retiring next June. I'm not thinking PBP or
anything like thatI wouldn't rule it out but once I retire I'll have
more time to ride ...my Rivs which do not get ridden enough...won't commute
with them for reasons I've listed many times.

Anyway good on you for riding and writing about it; I don't think it's a
pointless self-challenge at all. Emphatically I APPROVE!

We need a best to not as best ranking for the bikes you rode? There is not as
best to worst in my opinion on the bikes you rode.

SP and DP have it correct. I’m riding almost every day and I’m doing
comparatively little hammering. The first three weeks of this was built on a
daily commute routine made up of four little six mile stages. Anybody can ride
six miles at a conversational pace, but when you throw together a 1000 Mile
month out of many many little six mile rides, you’re already in a good place to
build on it. Once I had that base in August I was able to throw in longer and
harder big days among flatter easier cruising days.

Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hammer? No. Aerobic, absolutely. The concept is simple. Hammering tears
down the body, requires recovery. Aerobic builds up the body and it becomes
more efficient and thus going faster, farther, longer for the same effort.
Get and read any of the books by Maffetone. This one is a good place to
start:
https://www.amazon.com/Maffetone-Method-Holistic-Low-Stress-Exceptional/dp/0071343318/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8=1507121243=8-4=maffetone.

The heart rate monitor is a good starting point, but I just ride or run by
feel (and always have). I'm also not strict about always staying aerobic.
But I've been building a base for years now.

A few other factors: diet. The more processed foods in your diet, the long
your recovery and lower your fitness. also, consider highfat/low carb. I
only breath through my nose except for steep climbs or altitudes over
12,000 feet. This gives me a precise feel for my breathing volume (as basic
as heart rate), conditions the air through my sinuses (I drink a LOT less,
both from nose breathing and being high fat in diet. Carbs require a lot of
water.)

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-04 Thread Steve Palincsar
After a while of doing it daily, you adjust and it gets easier and
"normal".  Also, you don't "keep hammering away" day to day: you do
easier recovery rides in between.  I've read time and again that the
biggest "training error" people commit is hammering away all the time,
never taking it easy.

I speak with some experience here: after today's ride I'll be over 9,000
for the year; from May through Sept did over 1,000 mi each month (and
Apr just missed at 996).

Yes, this has been worth it for your loyal readers as well, Bill. I admire your
commitment, but obviously you have made some significant gains, and I'm sure
that has provided motivation down the stretch. I also like your bikes. I've
been tempted to get an RLT or a Black Mountain Road, and this thread hasn't
done anything to change that.

Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
It's been worth it on many levels. Maybe on more levels than I expected.

- It's been worth it from a cycling/fitness perspective. I'm getting a lot
stronger, and a lot faster.
- I'm feeling prepared for the Marin Mountains 200k, which as far as I can
tell, might be the hardest 200k brevet on the RUSA calendar.
- I'm feeling prepared for the 2018 Mountain bike racing season, even
though I'm not one of the racers. Maybe I'll ride as a sweeper at the
races. Most of "my" racers follow me on Strava and/or Instagram and I hope
my work inspires them to work.
- I'm seeing weight loss results. There's a scale at the office that
measures your weight and estimates your body composition from electrical
impulses through your feet. At the beginning of this, I was 180lbs, 25%
body fat. I'm excited to weigh in next Tuesday. I haven't stepped on a
scale, but I see how I look different in the mirror and I see how tight
clothes fit. I've made dietary tweaks in addition to my riding to get this
done. I'm shooting for <165lbs, 15% body fat, which would be awesome. At
that point, I'm an athlete, not just a mechanic.
- I'm considering continuing this training to go for an SR Series in 2018,
with a potential outcome of taking a run at PBP 2019.
- I've done several very memorable rides, including revisiting some rides
that I hadn't done in many years.
- I'm very fond of all the bikes in my stable, and so far none of the bikes
have disappointed. The two biggest upside surprises have been my Rosco
Bubbe step through and my Gunnar Double-speed. The Rosco Bubbe kicks ass,
and has now completely filled the spot I was holding for a 650B Atlantis. I
can't think of anything I could have done on a 650B Atlantis that I won't
be able to do with my Rosco Bubbe 650B step through. I've always viewed my
Gunnar two-speed single speed as my most pointless bike. I live on a steep
hill in a very hilly area, what do I need with a bike without derailers?
Now that I'm kind of fit, I can power up a lot more hills than I could have
a couple months ago. I have set a couple Strava Personal Records (PR) in
the lower gear, and it's taking shape in my mind as a legitimate training
tool.
- I've gotten a great sneak peek at retirement (I'm 48), and I have
absolutely no worries that there will be plenty to occupy me when I've
given up work for good. I'll try to pull in the date as much as I can.
- It's been essentially 100% solo, and I'm still really good at keeping
myself company. Capping it off with an SFR event will give me a taste of
the camaraderie part. I hope I'm friendly enough. :-/

ride 200 miles on each of 10 bikes.  This last Sunday I finished up
bike number 7, my Rosco Bubbe step through with a summit of Mount

mountain bike with a 44 mile jaunt through Tilden and Redwood Parks.
The two bikes that remain are my two-speed singlespeed Gunnar (~115
miles done), and my normal daily commute bike, my Rosco Bubbe road

work, so those that are weary from seeing my updates can breath easy
that it's almost over.  Some of you follow my photos on Instagram and
know all about it.  The 8 bikes in the books now are:

1.  1973 Windsor Carrera Sport
2.  Niner RLT9
3.  Black Mountain Road #1
4.  Rivendell Samuel Hillborne
5.  1985 Schwinn Tempo
6.  Black Mountain Road #2
7.  Rivendell Rosco Bubbe step through
8.  Niner Air 9 Carbon

Almost done!

So has it been worth it?  And did any special favorites among the many
