Pull the vol and squelch knobs off -- flip the radio up - side - down. At the rear -- the heat sink has a flat space insert flat blade screw driver and lift plastic off of tabs which are to the right and left of heat sink slot. After you know how it works - you can lift with your fingers

I would agree that it's good practice. However in this situation, the only other equipment at the site is cellphone stuff. And if they lose an antenna and the amp goes, they'll just have to get it all fixed. I don't know how long the repeater would continue to transmit without an antenna anyway,
