The only problem I've had with our Sony DAT1 DDS-4 SkyData drive
seems to have been resolved by replacing the Atto ExpressPCI card
with an Adaptec 2940U2B model.

Reports indicate that all is now running excellently on a beige Power
Macintosh G3, Mac OS 8.6 and Retrospect 4.2 (with updated driver
v1.9). Haven't used this combination much for network backups yet, as
I'm still pondering the Retrospect 4.3 update.

We use a Sony DDS-4 tape drive with excellent results. It is fast and
reliable. Follow normal maintenance procedures and it stays "happy"...:-)

I've installed a single DDS-4 drive, and was impressed. Backing up a small workgroup
of 2 G4s, a platinum G3, and a 7300 (host for the tape drive), I managed an aggregate
backup speed of approximately 140 MB/minute. My client hasn't been using the drive for
long enough to worry about mechanical issues, and has had no problems except a minor
storage set and scheduling issue in Retrospect. It seems to be a great drive.

Don't know about DDS4, but DDS3 has been great after having the same
problems as you with DDS2. . .

Re: Opinions about DDS4?

2000-07-18 Thread andrew

dds-4 (and dds-3 for that matter) are much more reliable than dds-2. I've
been using a Mammoth ex8900, however, and find it to be more reliable than
any of the 4mm drives (faster too under most circumstances).

The 8mm tapes are a little bit more expensive ($45), but easily accommodate
40-gig, and the drive mechanism costs about the same.

Works with Retrospect using the advanced driver kit.

I've got the Sony DDS4 with an APS enclosure. Ever since Dantz updated their
drivers (shortly after the 4.2 update) all has been good.

No drive or tape related failures or hiccups of any kind. I have also been
using the odd DDS3 tape occasionally without problems too.

Opinions about DDS4?

2000-07-18 Thread Steve Rothman

Hi all,

Can anyone who's been using DDS-4 with a Mac for Retrospect Network
backup comment about reliability and maintenance?

Years ago I used to use DDS-2 (H-P) and go really fed up with tape
heads that got dirty after minimal use, excessive cleaning
requirements, complicated and ever-changing instructions regarding
which brand tapes to use, alignment etc.

So, I bought DVD-RAM instead, which after 18 months has been 100%
reliable - never a media problem, never a file that couldn't be read,
PERFECT. Unfortunately, DVD-RAM is just too small of an online
capacity (2.6GB) and due to Retro's limitations on non-tape drives
simply adding a DVD-RAM drive or two doesn't really serve to increase
online capacity, if you use verification during the backup. (Also
DVD-RAM's media cost is at least double than tape.)

Sooo I'm back in the market for a tape drive, and my number 1
priority is reliability and maintenance requirements. Any reports
from DDS-4 users greatly appreciated...

-Steve
