Hi,
Can you please check the size of you storage sets?

Have a simelar problem wich drives me crazy.
Same drive I suppose(sony) DDS 3/backup machine 6100/Retrospect 4.2/MacOS 9
Used new scsi cables, termination on or off, etc, the standard scsicheck procedure.

I am getting hardware errors just after R4.2 is UPDATING the storage set. And in al
those 'crashed' sessions the storage set is not larger than about 4 GB.
Uncompressed there should be room on the tape for about 12GB..
I talked to Dantz. They advised me an upgrade to 4.2 (which I bought) SAME RESULTS!!
(I compained about their advice)

So what do I do now.. dont't laugh at me. I just split the to be backed up netword
in two. So I use two DDS tapes,
It works now as long as the siye doesn't exceed that 4 gb barrier,
But more work for the system operator !

regards,

huib

I had a similar problem with my Exabyte tape drive for awhile. The
two things I did to help cure the problem were 1) I bought a new,
high quality SCSI cable from Granite Digital, and 2) after I get a
hardware (or dirty tape) error, I use the cleaning cartridge, but I
run it through 4-5 in succession.

So far, that has worked, as I only occasionally get the errors.

Hope that helps.

If nothing else works maybe restarting the server after each back-up will
do it?

That makes my machine up and running but I have quite a diffrent setup from
yours... The problem on my side is that the back-up doesn't even start
unless that machine is restarted sort of frequentley.

Now days it works beautifully... or, using other words, it works the way
it's suppose to!

thanx,

I've learn one main thing about using Retrospect over the last ?12?
years. It will find defective hardware. Start with the SCSI cables. SCSI
termination. Move it to another machine. Or the drive may be going bad.
You didn't mention which exact model of drive you were using.
