Re: onstream deal??

2000-06-23 Thread Fred Turner, III

Just a note on our experience with OnStream. We bought an Internal
ADR30 drive and installed it in a PowerTowerPro 350. We immediately
lost everything on the SCSI chain. The drive works fine but I no
longer can use my Zip, Jaz drives.

Try checking ID #'s and termination. I have a internal drive in an
external case on the external chain of an 8600 (which also has a second,
built-in SCSI bus, plus an ATTO UW card) with another hard drive and
CD-burner, and I can see everything just fine...

I've installed about 5 of the SC-30 models on Macs. They work well. The
only issue I've run into is that sometimes the drives goes offline after
swapping tapes. Turning the unit off and on clears the problem. This issue
was well documented earlier on the Mac Managers maillist. There is still no
word from OnStream about a fix for the problem. Is it possible that the
problem is in the Retrospect Driver???

Phil,

When you say the drive goes offline, what exactly do you mean? Does it
disappear from the SCSI bus? Retrospect's driver wouldn't have anything to
do with random disappearances from the SCSI bus. Please call us at
925.253.3050 or e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with full details of the
problem so we can help you troubleshoot it.

Your input is greatly appreachiated. The thing is, and that's why I'm
asking, the deal came to me via mail from one of Sweden's larger Macintosh
dealers, (if not the largest??) MacSupport. Any dealer, no matter the
platform, should have back-up experience.

I find it hard to belive that they would promote a poor product... I also
find it hard to belive they would fool me and others on back-up strategies...

thanx all,

RE: onstream deal??

2000-06-21 Thread Craig Isaacs

A company mailed me with a deal on an onstream backup solution. What
technology does onstream use? Is that the name of a backup tape + drive or
a company that sell OEM backups...?? (DLT's for example.)

The tapes were 25/50 and the drive handle 4 MB/sec.

What are they talkig about!? ;-)

OnStream is a spin off from Philips Electronics.

You can find out about their drives and ADR technology from:

OK, so the tapes are called ADR. I downloaded the whitepapers and will take
a look...

The reason I ask is that I haven't seen them around in any catalogue from
all the large mailorder companies and there have been no disussion (or
little???) regarding this technology on this list... That makes me a little
sceptic, though the price / data seemed really interresting.

The disscussion: Either no-one are using them or there are loads of
OnStream/ADR users on this list and no-one is ever encounter any
problems... ;-)

Back-up is important stuff and if stuffes are cheap a good solution will
turn to a poor in no time... VXA seemed interresting as well.

thanx,

The drivers are available, at least for the smaller model, mhich comes
bundled with retrospect. Our press has one connected to a G4.

Re: onstream deal??

But who ever would want to use any backup program OTHER than Retrospect
on Mac OS? ;)

Jim

Eric Ullman said, in a previous message:

Retrospect for Mac OS and Windows actually use their own custom drivers,
 built right into the software.

On the Mac, we write pretty much the only drivers available for tape drives.
With Windows, Retrospect does not require (or use) the manufacturer's or
Microsoft's driver -- we support the device directly.

As always, a complete list of supported devices is available on the Dantz
 website. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=compatibility_list
