Phil,

Yes, any Retrospect-supported CD-R/W drive can read CD-R/W backup sets.

Hi,

I can verify that any CD-R or CD-RW drive can do it. I have a client who has
one of the infamous Yamaha 6416s. It appeared to back up to CD-RWs just fine
but then we couldn't restore from them when we needed it most: hard drive
failure. Luckily, I tried restoring from the same CD-RW discs on my personal
CD-RW drive and had no problems.

Mark.

Matthew,

Would it be correct to assume that any Retrospect CD-R or CD-RW drive could
be used to read the Backup Sets? Is there any limitation that it must be the
drive it was written with? I would expect not, but I just wanted to make
sure.

Re: Transferring StorageSets

David,

Just to clarify, CDs (CD-Rs or CD-RWs) written in Retrospect currently are
not readable in regular CD-ROM drives. We've gotten a lot of requests to
change this, and it is something we'd like to do in the future. Until then,
though, you need a compatible CD-R or CD-RW drive to perform a restore from
Retrospect-written discs.

CD-Rs written by a CD-R drive should read on all CD-Rom drives.

CD-Rs written by a CD-RW drive may only read on 24x or faster. (Someone
with more knowledge on this please jump in!)

Re: Transferring StorageSets

2000-03-19 Thread Workingmacs

I answered my own questions from some experimentation. Snapshots are lost
when transferring StorageSets. But now I realize that the bigger problem is
that if I create CD-ROMs for the client, they can't be read without a CD-R
unit, which the client doesn't have. I'm now wondering what the best way is
of reclaiming the $600 invested in Jaz cartridges. Perhaps I should do a
restore and burn the restored files onto CDs? I would lose snapshots, but
that would have been the case anyway if I have preserved the StorageSets
during the transfer.

Any suggestions out there?

Transferring StorageSets

2000-03-17 Thread Workingmacs

A client has several old storagesets on 1GB Jaz cartridges. We want to
transfer them to CD-ROMs, so the Jaz cartridges can be reused. As far as I
can tell, the only way to do this is to use the Transfer function under the
Tools->Copy screen.  Is that true?

And from reading the manual (I really did this time!), it looks like we lose
all snapshots when doing this. But I presume that all files, even older ones
that weren't on the final snapshot of the original StorageSet, will be
transferred. Is that true?
