This is one of those issues that LMS on its own cant solve. Its a
limitation of the commonly accepted tag structure.
If you were starting from scratch there would be more tags as standard
and then the scanner in LMS could have made use of them.
There might be an INDEX tag for use when you
On this topic it is well worth having a look at how the LMS database is
actually structured and what the scanner does with AlbumArtist, Artist
and similar tags e.g. Composer
In summary, there is only one database table called "contributors" - the
scanner will read the tags and insert entries

Compilations are different to regular albums and the logic LMS uses at
scan time is worth examining.
First irrespective of what is in the Compilation tag if anything LMS
will look at the contents of a folder. If it finds tracks by different
track artists but no album artist it will treat the

Its not clear what level the OP is at but its probably worth stating
that the tags are used at scan time to populate the LMS database.
Everything that you put into the tags finds its way into the database
but LMS does not generally use them otherwise. There are exceptions but
rare in normal use.

Not sure. I don't have many MP3s these days. Its definitely upper case
in the case of FLACs but
I think the general consensus is that FLAC is the best format for LMS.
IMO the best Windows tools for the job are *dbPoweramp* (the paid
version) as it provides the CD ripping plus good access to the various
online databases for automatic tagging but always check what it pulls
down and *mp3tag*
Your problem is indeed at the tagging level and possibly the setting you
have chosen in LMS for treatment of compilations.
As you are clearly on Windows I strongly suggest that you install mp3tag
and stop using that tagging software which looks significantly inferior.

As somebody pointed out in a different thread before you even start
tagging for compilations in LMS you have to decide which definition of
"compilation" you are going to adopt.
For me a compilation is a Various Artists type album whereas a Best of
is NOT a compilation (although I do recognise
LMS uses the CPAN module Audio::Scan to extract data from files -

I think so. The scanner
FLAC 100% - If you subsequently want to convert from lossless to a lossy
format you can easily do so but you can never convert from lossy to
lossless without loss of quality. Also if you ever want to re-create a
CD at its full quality you can easily do so from FLAC but not from a
lossy format.
