I took your advice and upgraded to 7.9 and the functionality that I was
trying to achieve is now built in and working perfectly. I'll stick at
this level until I'm sure that Erland's plugins still work in future
updates. Thanks to you all of you for steering me in the right
direction.

Nor me.
Im on 8.2.x but as Gary says 7.9 something will probably include it.
7.7.6 is ancient history

For a long time, I've been juggling an issue with the Browsing function
in LMS for Various Artists albums.
The default behavior seems to be that if you want the songs on
compilation albums to be listed under each of the artists names, you
need to leave the Album Artist blank and the Compilation
I put album artist tags on everything. I put comp=1 tags on whatever I
want LMS to think is a comp. but strictly speaking, that's just a
preference, not necessary.
A lot of bands have an album called best of, or greatest hits, etc...
bc I also use other software, not just LMS, I put the band

To provide another option; I use the compilation tag for recordings that
are either;
- from different artists (I leave album artist blank)
- from same artist (for example Beatles 1) where the recording is like a
best of album (I tag album artist as Beatles). That way, the album shows
up under

Thanks everyone for the detailed replies. I will save this to refer back
to.
A lot more flexibility with tagging/sorting than I first realised. I'm
only a basic user but I do like things to be "correct".
I didn't even know until I started searching, there where so many tag
categories, but the

I recall that's true in my own case, using mp3tag and ID3v2.3 tags.

Thanks.
That sounds perfect.
On a different note:Only just discovered the use of ";" or "\" so just
tweaking a few albums with partnerships and similar.
Was a little unsure about - eg Ian Gillan, Gillan, Ian Gillan Band. So
have created multiple artists using ";" so I can list all under Ian
It depends on your interpretation of "compilation"
In my world that means a Various Artists album and like you my Best Of's
are under the Artist in question. For these I would set the album artist
accordingly and ensure that the compilation tag is NOT set.
For VA albums I do set the
Hi all
Trying to tidy up my Music Library (Not Classical) of CD's, Vinyl Rips
and Web Sourced Albums.
I've tried searching and reading but there's lots of debate on Various
Artists/Compilation behaviour and Bugs etc.
Most of the posts go back many years.
