How 'bout a second independent Rivendell machine running a duplicate log? It's not like there is massive expense involved. If one machine goes flop, the second one can be launched by the silence sense device. And it would sustain the programming flow better than a hardware MP3 device. As one

The silence detector should be triggered rarely. Though experience tells me that isn't always the case (e.g. gaps where split audio should have fired during network programs, presenters going off to make tea and not hitting the sequence/auto button at 4am). The catch with your suggestion is that
