[RollTideFan] Tide's Taylor leaving team
Article published Aug 2, 2005 Tide's Taylor leaving team By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor TUSCALOOSA | Shawn Taylor, a 6-foot-11 center on last year's University of Alabama basketball team, will leave UA to play at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College this season, Crimson Tide head coach Mark Gottfried said on Monday. Gottfried said he wished Taylor well but was disappointed in the decision, which was based on Taylor's desire for immediate playing time. Shawn was still developing and I think he would have eventually matured into a good player for us, Gottfried said. This is also a prime example of how you can get hurt on the APR (the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate). This will count against us even though it's a situation that was totally beyond our control. Taylor, a native of Unadilla, Ga., sat out the 2003-04 season as a redshirt. He appeared in 11 games last season, averaging 1.6 points and 1.4 rebounds per game in those appearances. Alabama appears set on the interior for the upcoming season with seniors Chuck Davis and Evan Brock, junior Jermareo Davidson and freshmen Richard Hendrix and Yamene Coleman. However, Taylor's departure will leave UA with no more than 11 players on scholarship for the upcoming season, two below the NCAA limit of 13. Additionally, UA is still awaiting word on the academic status of junior college signee Ray George. The 6-4 guard is finishing classes at Perimeter Junior College in Decatur, Ga., and is not yet eligible for the upcoming season. Coleman, a 6-9 center from Wilcox County, was recently cleared for freshman eligibility by the NCAA Clearinghouse and is expected to arrive on the UA campus later this month. Since last season, Alabama has had four scholarship players transfer out of the program: Taylor, Akini Adkins, Glenn Miles and Albert Weber. The Tide also lost leading scorer Kennedy Winston, who left school early to pursue a professional career but was not selected in the NBA draft. With three seniors (Davis, Brock and Jean Felix) on next year's roster, Alabama could be looking to sign as many as six players in the upcoming recruiting season, which begins in November. The Crimson Tide already has two commitments, guard Mikhael Torrance of Mobile and forward Avery Jukes of Atlanta. In other men's basketball news, Gottfried said he anticipated finalizing the Crimson Tide's 2005-06 schedule in the next week or two. We're waiting on one more game, Gottfried said. We hope to have everything completed soon. In addition to its Southeastern Conference schedule, Alabama will play its usual demanding non-conference slate. The Crimson Tide will open the season against Miami (Ohio) in the Preseason NIT. UA would face a potential second-round game against Memphis, and could play teams like UCLA and Duke if it reaches the tournament semifinals in New York. Alabama also has home games with Notre Dame and North Carolina State and road contests against Temple and Oklahoma on its early schedule. Two summers ago it was defensive end Wallace Gilberry. Last summer it was defensive back Jeffrey Dukes. This week it's linebacker Eryk Anders. The past two seasons the 6-3, 223-pound Anders was a defensive end at Smithson Valley HS, which is located in a suburb of San Antonio, TX. As a senior, Anders racked up 115 tackles, 42 tackles for losses and 11 sacks. Alabama is getting a real jewel of a football player, especially considering it's so late, says Smithson Valley head coach Larry Hill. He was an All-State Class 5A player in the state of Texas, which is pretty good when you consider it's the largest classification in a state with a lot of good football players. During his career, Anders played in two state championship games. In last year's title game, he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. For all of last season, Anders blocked five kicks, two of which he returned for touchdowns. He's got a hot motor, Hill says. He plays wide open all the time. Even though he's just over 220 pounds, he plays very strong. And he's a great athlete who can run a 4.55 40. He anchored our mile relay team and our sprint relay. The kid can really run. Even though Anders played down at defensive end in high school, it's believed he'll play outside linebacker for Alabama. They [Alabama] really haven't said for sure whether he'll play down or at linebacker, but it will definitely be on the outside, Hill says. My guess is that he'll be an outside linebacker, because that's where he would've played for us had we not needed him at end. Similar to Gilberry's case two years ago, Hill believes that many college scouts simply overlooked Anders. I think because he was an undersized defensive end a lot of coaches missed him, Hill says. I think they looked at him for the way he was, rather than projecting him for what he could become. He's 6-3, 220-plus right now, and he's still growing. He wasn't this big last season. Hill says that Alabama, Texas Tech and Ole Miss had been keeping tabs on Anders for several months. Originally he planned to walk on at Ole Miss, Hill says. They wanted him, but they were out of scholarships. They were going to give him one as soon as it came open. Alabama had offered him the same deal. But then, from what I gathered, Alabama had a scholarship come available here late and they told him they wanted him to go ahead and sign now. Anders is expected to report with the Alabama squad on Monday night, August 9th. -- ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! Article published Jul 8, 2005 Dreamland sends wrong message Ruth B. Rhodes Peterson Dear Editor: It is no wonder that our children have no respect for their elders! Have you seen the Dreamland Bar-B-Que commercial on TV where the chef says, Who wants ribs? A little girl and boy come over. The girl says, These are not Dreamland. The little boy hits the plate, and it hits the man in the chest. What a mess! Is this any way to teach our children how to behave? I think not. Perhaps Dreamland should rethink this commercial. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Further proof this country has gone nuts
He grabbed girl's arm -- now he's a sex offender July 1, 2005 BY STEVE PATTERSON Staff Reporter Fitzroy Barnaby said he had to swerve to avoid hitting the 14-year-old Des Plaines girl who walked in front of his car. She said he yelled, Come here, little girl, before getting out of his car and grabbing her by the arm. He said he simply lectured her. She said she broke free and ran, fearful of what he'd do next. In a Thursday ruling, the Appellate Court of Illinois said the 28-year-old Evanston man must register as a sex offender. While acknowledging it might be unfair for [Barnaby] to suffer the stigmatization of being labeled a sex offender when his crime was not sexually motivated, the court said his actions are the type that are often a precursor to a child being abducted or molested. Though Barnaby was acquitted of attempted kidnapping and child abduction charges stemming from the November 2002 incident, he was convicted of unlawful restraint of a minor -- which is a sex offense. 'Most stupid ruling' Now, he will have to tell local police where he lives and won't be able to live near a park or school. This is the most stupid ruling the appellate court has rendered in years, said Barnaby's Chicago attorney, Frederick Cohn. If you see a 15-year-old beating up your 8-year-old and you grab that kid's hand and are found guilty of unlawful restraint, do you now have to register as a sex offender? But Cook County state's attorney spokesman Tom Stanton said Barnaby should have to register because of the proclivity of offenders who restrain children to also commit sex acts or other crimes against them. In the criminal case against him, Cook County Judge Patrick Morse said that it's more likely than not Barnaby planned only to chastise the girl when he grabbed her, but I can't read his mind. I don't really see the purpose of registration in this case. I really don't, Morse said. But I feel that I am constrained by the statute. Recognizing the stigma that comes with being labeled as a sex offender, the appellate court said it is [Barnaby's] actions which have caused him to be stigmatized, not the courts. [RollTideFan] Going to hell in a hand basket
SWEDEN LEGALIZES LOOKING UP LADIES SKIRTS! By MARK MILLER ADDING to its reputation as the most sexually liberal nation in the world, Sweden has just legalized looking up ladies' skirts! In a nearly unanimous vote in the Swedish Parliament, the motion was carried 332 to 17. To celebrate the new law, the Parliament's second floor was replaced with a see-through glass floor, and women were invited to stand on the floor, wearing their loosest, widest skirts, with or without underwear. Men were invited to bring their cameras, stand on the floor below and look up. I was fully aroused for the next three weeks, gushes male viewer, Tor Lundgren, 24. The women standing above the men were no less enthusiastic. It was even more exciting than I'd imagined, reveals Christina Schollin, 32. I chose to wear no underwear, and, well, I just felt this electric thrill run through me as the men stared up at me. I may just leave my underwear home from now on. Lutheran minister Gunnar Bjoernstrand, 40, has made peace with the new law. It was just a question of time before it became legalized. And, really, something harmless like this should not be a crime. Sex and the body are beautiful, natural things. When we appreciate and adore the body by looking up ladies' skirts, we are, to a certain degree, giving thanks to the creations of God, who after all made us in His image. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Tide's Forbes misses score
Article published Jul 6, 2005 Tide's Forbes misses score The incoming recruiting class for the University of Alabama football team has sustained its first academic casualty. Defensive end Antonio Forbes (6-4, 265 pounds) from Meadowcreek High School in Norcross, Ga., told Scout.com late Tuesday that he didn't score high enough on the SAT to qualify. He'll likely head to a junior college next season. Alabama over-signed the class, with particular emphasis on the defensive line. Forbes was one of four signees at strong-side defensive end, along with Brandon Fanney (6-5, 260), Bobby Greenwood (6-4, 239) and Travis McCall (6-2, 235). On the weak side, Alabama signed Brandon Deaderick (6-4, 232) and Zach Schreiber (6-2, 220). ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] Scouting is looking pretty risky
Slef, has yore trooper made it back home? No Sign of Missing Scout at Yellowstone Monday, June 27, 2005 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. - Two white tennis shoe believed to belong to a 13-year-old Boy Scout were found in the fast-moving Yellowstone River, but Luke Sanburg is still missing and feared drowned. National Park Service officials said a search would continue for a third day Monday. On Sunday, when the second tennis shoe was found, about 250 park personnel, family and church members and other volunteers were searching along the river's rugged banks for any sign of the missing teen. The second tennis shoe was found in the same general area where its mate was found a day earlier but no other clothing was spotted, said Cheryl Matthews, Yellowstone National Park spokeswoman. The missing teen, Luke Sanburg, of Helena, Mont., was pushing logs into the river with other Scouts on Friday when a log clipped his legs and knocked him into the river. He was last seen floating downstream with his head above water, floating toward a stretch of rapids, park officials said. The tennis shoes, fitting the description of those worn by Luke, were found about five miles downstream from where he entered the river. Sunday's search expanded north into Montana from a 14-mile section of the river between Knowles Falls and a bridge at Corwin Springs, Mont. A team of kayakers combed the river while park officials and volunteers focused on the banks, said Matthews. A helicopter also was used. Luke and six members of his troop were camping in the northern part of the park, about six miles from Gardiner, Mont., a park gateway. Three adults were with the boys. The Yellowstone incident came just days after 11-year-old Scout Brennan Hawkins was found in good condition after spending four days wandering the Utah wilderness. service_ap_36.gif Description: GIF image ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

Col. Gordon Cucullu FrontPageMagazine.com | June 27, 2005 Last week, I was privileged to be part of a Department of Defense trip to the Joint Task Force - Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I got to see the operations of this controversial facility up-close - something particularly important after Sen. Richard Durbin's comparison of its guard to Nazi stormtroopers and calls of leftists to shut the center down. Our group went to GITMO to check out tales that the military was being too tough on these terrorist detainees. We left convinced that America is being extraordinarily lenient - far too lenient. After speaking with soldiers, sailors, and civilians who collectively staff Gitmo, I left convinced that abuse definitely exists at the detention facilities, and it typically fails to receive the press attention it deserves: it's the relentless, merciless attacks on American servicemen and women by these terrorist thugs. Many of the orange jumpsuit-clad detainees fight their captors at every opportunity, openly bragging of their desire to kill Americans. One has promised that, if released, he would find MPs in their homes through the internet, break into their houses at night, and cut the throats of them and their families like sheep. Others claim authority and vindication to kill women, children, and other innocents who oppose their jihadist mission authorized by the Koran (the same one that hangs in every cell from a specially-designed holder intended to protect it from a touching the cell floor - all provided at U.S. taxpayer expense). One detainee was heard to tell another: One day I will enjoy sucking American blood, although their blood is bitter, undrinkable These recalcitrant detainees are known euphemistically as being non-compliant. They attack guards whenever the soldiers enter their cells, trying to reach up under protective facemasks to gouge eyes and tear mouths. They make weapons and try to stab the guards or grab and break limbs as the guards pass them food. We dined with the soldiers, toured several of the individual holding camps, observed interrogations, and inspected cells. We were impressed by the universally high quality of the cadre and the facilities. While it may not be exactly Club GITMO, as Rush Limbaugh uses to tweak the hard-Left critics who haven't a clue about reality here, GITMO is a far cry from the harshness experienced even by maximum security prisoners in the U.S. Meals for detainees are ample: we lunched on what several thought was an accumulated single day's ration for detainees. No, the contract food service manager said with a laugh, what you're looking at there is today's lunch. A single meal. They get three a day like that. The vegetables, pita bread, and other well- prepared food filled two of the large Styrofoam take-home containers we see in restaurants. Several prisoners have special meal orders like no tomatoes or no peanut products depending on taste or allergies. One prisoner, General Hood said, throws back his food tray if it contains things he has specifically said he doesn't want. How is he punished for this outrageous behavior? His tray is numbered, the food he requested is put on it, and the corrected order is delivered to his cell. The detainees are similarly catered to medically. Almost every one arrived at GITMO with some sort of battlefield trauma. After all, the majority were captured in combat. Today they are healthy, immunized, and well cared for. At a visit to the modern hospital facility - dedicated solely to the detainees and comparable to a well-equipped and staffed small-town hospital with operating, dental, routine facilities - the doctor in charge confirmed that the caloric count for the detainees was so high that while most detainees arrived undernourished, medics now watch for issues stemming from high cholesterol and being overweight. Each of approximately 520 terrorists currently held in confinement averages about four medical visits monthly, something one would expect from only a dedicated American hypochondriac. Welcome to the rigors of detention under American supervision. Of the estimated 70,000 battlefield captures that were made in Afghanistan, only a tiny percentage, something on the order of 800-plus, were eventually

Since slavery was abolished, good ass-lickers are hard to come by. Witt is a purdy damn smrat guy. He's keepin his ass-licker/fall guy real damn handy. - Original Message - From: Jeff Todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RollTideFan-The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List RTF@rolltidefan.net Sent: Sunday, June 19, 2005 9:38 AM Subject: [RollTideFan] Am'a gone vomick! CECIL HURT: Witt proposes new contract, raise for Moore June 19, 2005 Among the many discussion topics that can prompt debate in the University of Alabama's fan base, the tenure of Mal Moore as the Crimson Tide's director of athletics ranks near the top of the list. There is universal agreement that Moore, who became the director of athletics at UA in November 1999, has faced challenges that no other Alabama athletics director has ever faced, from whirlwind football coaching transitions to a harrowing NCAA probation to a massive upgrade of the bricks-and-mortar of the UA facilities. The unanimity breaks down, though, when different factions evaluate Moore's success rate at handling those challenges. His staunchest supporters think that no other person could have navigated the rough waters; his most fervent detractors think that he could have steered clear of the troubles, had he followed a different course. But no matter how many parties enter the debate, they can all be drowned out by a single voice. And that voice has spoken. University of Alabama President Robert Witt has recommended to the University's Board of Trustees that Moore be given a five-year contract extension and a raise, a recommendation that the board accepted when it met in Tuscaloosa earlier this week. Moore has yet to sign the extension, but that seems to be a mere formality. When it is signed, Moore's contract, which was to expire at the end of this month, will extend to June of 2010. Witt said Saturday morning that the lengthy extension was his idea. I was actually the one who recommended it, he said. I have the utmost respect for the job that Mal Moore has done. His work with the Crimson Tradition fund has been extraordinary. The initial goal of Crimson Tradition was to raise $50 million and that goal has been met and exceeded. He has provided steady leadership through a very difficult period, particularly in the transition from Coach [Dennis] Franchione to Coach [Mike] Price to Coach [Mike] Shula. The academic performance of our athletes in that times has been, in my opinion, exemplary. He has focused very intently on strengthening Jon Dever's academic support group. You can look at other campuses around the country and you will frequently see stories about academic difficulties that we have not had here. When you look at the performance of our teams from basketball to baseball to gymnastics to softball, it has been excellent. And I believe he has served as a very effective mentor to Mike Shula. When I added everything up -- Mal's performance, his dedication to the University and his love for the University -- I wanted to be sure he would be here for the foreseeable future. Moore, reached just before he departed for a cruise with Crimson Tide coaches and fans on Saturday, said that he was flattered and appreciative. President Witt called me yesterday to tell me it had been approved, Moore said. We had actually first talked about it six or eight months ago, when he brought it up to me. All I can say now is that I'll do my best to keep things moving in the right direction. For the most part, Witt, who became president of UA in March 2003, has allowed Moore to run the athletic department in his own way. When Witt has had to make decisions, they have been firm, and in the two most important instances, correct. The first was his decision to fire Price. The second has been his decision to find grounds for productive existence within the NCAA, even when some boosters have urged a more belligerent, perhaps even litigious, approach. There are many possible ways to interpret Witt's strong stand in support of Moore. Some will see it as an endorsement of the status quo. Others might see it as empowering Moore to make changes in the athletics department beyond the renovation of the Tide's facilities. It will at least serve to deflect rumors that Moore's departure or retirement is imminent. One ting is certain, though. Dr. Robert Witt has made clear that his vision for the foreseeable future of UA athletics will be implemented by Mal Moore. Cecil Hurt is sports editor of The Tuscaloosa News. Re: [RollTideFan] Cottrell: Culpepper attorneys paid for by NCAA
Now that is some good shit right there. - Original Message - From: Jeff Todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RollTideFan-The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List RTF@rolltidefan.net Sent: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 8:53 PM Subject: [RollTideFan] Cottrell: Culpepper attorneys paid for by NCAA TUSCALOOSA | Attorneys for former University of Alabama assistant football coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams have asked for an order to force defendant Tom Culpepper to produce a document they believe will show that his legal fees are being paid by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In the motion seeking the order, lawyers for Cottrell and Williams claim that such an agreement between the NCAA and Culpepper would clearly result in bias[ed] testimony. According to court documents, the plaintiffs believe such an agreement was reached on or around Nov. 15, 2004. Cottrell and Williams are suing the NCAA and others, including Culpepper, for defamation after they were fired in the wake of a recruiting scandal. The motion claims: The defendants (Culpepper, the NCAA et al) base their decision not to produce the confidentiality agreement on erroneous conclusions of law and attempts to apply the Alabama Rules of Evidence to discovery. The plaintiffs are seeking $15 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages after being identified in an NCAA investigation, but later cleared. According to records released in the Logan Young criminal case in Memphis, Culpepper was a key secret witness for the NCAA in building its case against Alabama along with Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer. Culpepper's three-year contract to provide Alabama with video content of potential high school recruits concluded this past season. In early May, both Culpepper and the NCAA filed motions before Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court Judge Steve Wilson for summary judgment because plaintiffs, as public figures cannot establish through clear and convincing evidence that any of the NCAA defendant's statements were made with 'actual malice' needed to sustain those claims. A hearing on the matter has been scheduled for June 23. Another hearing regarding the motions to compel will be held the following day, June 24. The case is scheduled for a jury trial beginning July 11. The initial motion to compel against Culpepper was filed on May 23. In its response, attorneys for the NCAA argued that the request seeks information that is immaterial, irrelevant and not reasonably calculated to lead to the discovery of the admissible evidence. This defendant also objects to this request for production to the extent that it seeks information that is personal, confidential and/or protected from disclosure pursuant to the Alabama Rules of Civil Procedure. The defense also contended that discovery of the agreement would have a chilling effect on the settlement negotiations - which plaintiffs denied. An additional motion against other defendants, including the NCAA, was filed Tuesday. In it, part of Rule 8 of the Alabama Rules of Evidence was highlighted: This rule also does not require exclusion when the evidence is offered for another purpose, such as proving bias or prejudice of a witness .. Culpepper is represented by Birmingham's John Scott, who could not be reached for comment. His firm, Starnes and Atchison, also represented the university in the initial stages of the lawsuit. In February, Young was convicted on four counts of conspiracy, crossing state lines to commit racketeering and arranging bank withdrawals to cover up a crime for paying a high school football coach to influence Tyrone Means' recruitment to Alabama. The former Crimson Tide booster is due to be sentenced Thursday by Judge Daniel Breen of the District Court for Western Tennessee. We won't have to worry... about LSU too much longer! http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/printstory.mpl/topstory/3210967 June 5, 2005, 6:28PM IS TEXAS NEXT? By ERIC BERGER Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle By century's end, much of southern Louisiana may sink into the Gulf of Mexico. The Texas coastline, including Galveston, could soon follow. That's the sobering - and controversial - conclusion of a new report published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that finds the northern Gulf of Mexico is sinking much faster than geologists thought. The report centers on the humble benchmark, a small metal disk bolted to the ground, that provides a standard elevation above sea level for land surveying and mapping as well as determining flood-prone areas. But there's one problem with benchmarks: They don't give reliable elevation readings if they're sinking along with everything else. That's what the geologists who wrote the NOAA report say is happening in Louisiana: The yardstick is broken. Instead of minimal geologic subsidence along most of the Louisiana coast, as previously thought, the state's entire coastal region is sinking at least 5 feet every century. And although a number of local officials disagree with the report's conclusions about Texas, here's a scary thought: Similar forces could well be at work just a few miles south of Houston. Subsidence doesn't stop at the Texas border, said Roy Dokka, a co-author of the NOAA report and a Louisiana State University geologist. A colleague of Dokka's in Houston, the editor of the Houston Geological Society Bulletin, is more blunt in his assessment of the report. Galveston, says geologist Arthur Berman, is history. Flooding a major threat The report already has ignited debate in Louisiana. If that state's coast continues to sink, its multibillion-dollar plan to protect coastal cities and wetlands from flooding has targeted the wrong problem, erosion. Every building on land certified as safe from flooding may, in fact, be in danger if Louisiana's benchmarks are flawed. And levees thought to protect New Orleans from a Category 3 hurricane might fail even if a moderate Category 2 storm struck the Big Easy. Texas could have similar problems if its benchmark elevations are flawed. The National Hurricane Center bases its storm-surge models on benchmarks, as do emergency planners trying to determine when key evacuation routes might flood. Houston felt the problem acutely during Tropical Storm Allison when benchmarks indicated that certain areas, such as some Texas Medical Center buildings, should not have flooded even in the torrent of rain produced by that storm. We know that a lot of benchmarks in Texas are inaccurate, said Gary Jeffress, a mapping specialist at Texas AM University-Corpus Christi. Shifting land Subsidence - the sinking or settling of land - comes in two basic forms. One is man-made, caused by groundwater pumping or oil and gas extraction. The other, which Dokka says is causing nearly all of the problems along Louisiana's coast, is natural, or geologic, subsidence. Houston has grappled with man-made subsidence for the past 30 years with help from the Harris-Galveston Coastal Subsidence District, which has spent about $10 million studying and measuring the problem. As a result of this research, the Houston region has undergone a multibillion-dollar conversion from ground wells to surface water for its consumer and industrial needs. In the next decade or so, north and west Harris County will spend as much as $3 billion more for a similar conversion. Ron Neighbors, general manager of the subsidence district, said he thinks this conversion has largely solved the area's subsidence problems. He attributes little of the region's sinking to geologic subsidence and doesn't think the area's coastal regions may be sinking as much as 4 or 5 feet a century. We realize there is some amount of natural subsidence that will occur over time, Neighbors said. But we believe that to be about three quarters of a foot per century. If he has little confidence in the report by Dokka, Neighbors has even less in the scientist himself. Neighbors said the Louisiana geologist has incentive to cause fear. You don't get any grants if you say everything is OK, Neighbors said. Berman said that, although conclusions drawn by Dokka's report are controversial, they were checked by NOAA for 18 months and wouldn't have been published if they were bogus. The controversy comes, he says, because the findings challenge existing models. Every geologist agrees that three main factors contribute to coast loss: rising sea levels, coastal

[RollTideFan] ROLL DAMN TIDE
Alabama Advances to Third Women's College World Series Saturday, May 28, 2005 COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS-It took a little drama, but the eighth-ranked Alabama softball team (62-13) was able to withstand a three-run seventh inning rally and come away with a 6-5 victory over the fifth ranked Texas AM Aggies (47-10) and advance to its third Women's College World Series in six years. I'd like to congratulate Texas AM on a great year, said Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy. Unfortunately somebody had to go home. All 1,200 of the fans got their money's worth because that was a great ball game. For the second straight game, the Crimson Tide took an early lead, again taking advantage of Texas AM miscues. Jackie Wilkins (SR, Miami, Fla.) continued her hot hitting, leading off the game with a single. She was sacrificed to second by Jordan Praytor (Fr, Vancouver, Wash.) and came around to score on an infield single by Ashley Courtney (SR, Vero Beach, Fla.) and a throwing error by Aggie third baseman Jamie Hinshaw. Dominique Accetturo delivered a two-out single through the right side scoring Courtney and Alabama had an early 2-0 lead. I thought it was key (getting ahead), especially against (Amanda) Scarborough, because she's got an under seven ERA and only one loss, said Murphy. I thought if we got ahead again, it would put a lot of pressure on her. The Aggies responded in the top of the second plating two runs on an infield single and a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2. Bama reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second, again taking advantage of TAMU mistakes. With Leah White (SR, Grayson, Ga.) on second and two outs, Wilkins hit a bouncer to third, but Hinshaw's throw was low, allowing White to score from second and giving the Tide a 3-2 lead. Courtney extended Alabama's lead when she hit Alabama's third lead-off home run of the series, a high solo shot down the right field line for a 4-2 lead. The home run put Courtney in elite company, making her only the second player in Crimson Tide history to record 300 career hits joining former four-time All-America and currently Olympian Kelly Kretschman who finished her career with 368. Courtney was at it again in the bottom of the fourth, this time delivering a two-out single down the right field line scoring Capper Reed (SR, Guntersville, Ala.). Praytor was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on the single and came around to score on a throwing error by Texas AM right fielder Rocky Spencer pushing the Tide's lead to 6-2. The Aggies wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning before Stephanie VanBrakle (JR, Chambersburg, Pa.) got Joy Davis to ground out to Staci Ramsey (JR, Houston, Texas) at third base, ending the Texas AM rally and sending the Tide to Oklahoma City. VanBrakle (33-6) picked up the win allowing three runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work. She worked into the seventh inning and recorded an out before being pulled for reliever Chrissy Owens (Fr, Miami, Fla.). However after allowing a hit and a walk, VanBrakle was brought back in to close out the game. I never really left the game because I was right there cheering Chrissy on from the bench the whole time, said VanBrakle. Alabama will face the overall fourth seed and fifth ranked Texas Longhorns in the first round of the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City on Thursday, June 2. The game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT and will be televised live on ESPN2. Game Notes: --Dominique Accetturo made he 200th career start. --Stephanie VanBrakle broke school record for strikeouts in a season with her 311th in the top of the first inning. --Ashley Courtney moved to fifth on Alabama's all-time home run list while recording her career high 10th home run of the season. --Courtney became the second player in Alabama history to record 300 hits. --Alabama advances to third WCWS in six years and second in three years. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

The governing body will conduct the first in a series of summer meetings next month and could decide by August whether it can and should impose a ban on Indian imagery, which critics charge is demeaning and even racist. Ultimate responsibility falls to the NCAA's highest body, the 17-member Executive Committee, which meets in early August. Whether the association will or legally must continue to yield to individual campus discretion - as the NCAA does on such matters as minority hiring - is uncertain. Targets range from Florida State (Seminoles) and Utah (Utes) to lower-division institutions with particularly provocative nicknames: Southeastern Oklahoma (Savages) and Carthage, Wis. (Redmen). What we can do is educate, get the information out there to you, says Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Robert Vowels, who heads the Minority Interests and Opportunities Committee. I can't sit here and say right now that we can enforce something or establish a penalty structure. One possibility, says the NCAA's Corey Jackson, who works closely with the committee, is a lever the association has applied to the issue of flying the Confederate flag or incorporating in their state flags. Two states that do, South Carolina and Mississippi, are barred from hosting association championships. The NCAA's attention to the mascot issue grew out of the flag flap four years ago. This isn't the first time the NCAA has undertaken a review of such nicknames. In 2002, the minority interests committee called for this tradition to be retired. Those schools say the use of the nicknames is in many case a tradition intended to honor Native Americans and their culture. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

The former Alabama All-America tight end, who defined the position in his 13 seasons (1978-90) with the NFL's Cleveland Browns, has proven to be just as valuable off the field. He's currently general manager and executive vice president of the Baltimore Ravens, a team he helped lead to a Super Bowl title in 2000. There is a strong contingent of Alabama supporters who would like to see the Muscle Shoals native return to the Capstone and apply his experience and success to the Crimson Tide program, and Newsome admits that is something he would enjoy doing -- eventually. At some point I'm definitely coming back home, Newsome said during a break in play Friday at the McDonald's-Cornelius Bennett Celebrity Golf Classic at Lakewood Golf Club's Dogwood course. My son is in the eighth grade and I'd like for him to finish high school where he's at now. As for any job offers from officials at Alabama, or others connected with the school, Newsome said there have been feelers but nothing more. It's good to be wanted, he said, but with the experience I have gained playing the game and working on the administrative side, I think I could be an asset. But there hasn't been any pressure placed on me. I think people respect me and the job I have and what I'm doing. And that's nice. Aside from his record-setting playing career -- he retired as the NFL's all-time leading receiver at tight end and ranked fourth among all receivers -- he has established himself as a respected and successful front-office man. He was the first black to be named a general manager in the NFL, and his success has opened doors for others. I had a good high school coach, I played four years for coach (Paul) Bryant and I played and worked for an owner like Art Modell, so I've been surrounded by people with a passion for the game and men who were just good people, Newsome said. I have learned something from all of them. He took those lessons and developed his own style and approach to his jobs. What (his success) has done is I have blazed a trail for ex-players to remain in the game and let people know we can do a great job, Newsome said. Now, ex-players are coming back into the game and that's great to see. When you are a player and you have accomplished some things, that stays with you. That success helps you. It is a design that has worked for Newsome, who has been named to five halls of fames -- National Football Foundation, NCAA, Pro Football, state of Alabama and Senior Bowl. The success he has enjoyed doesn't give Newsome cause to enjoy those moments as much as it re-charges his efforts to gain more success. It only drives you more, he said. I'm very envious of New England right now, which has won three of the last four Super Bowls. That's what you work for. That's what all your efforts are aimed toward. [RollTideFan] Damn the luck
Alabama Finishes Second at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships Friday, April 22, 2005 Alabama used a fierce rally here at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships to jump from fourth place after three rotations to second place in the end with a 197.400, its best score of the season. Alabama started the night strong with a 49.325 before struggling through a 48.85 balance beam set. The Tide, led by back-to-back 10.0s from junior Ashley Miles, scored a meet's best scores on both the floor exercise and vault, going 49.6 and 49.625 respectively. It was the Tide's sixth second place tally and 10th top-2 finish over the past 23 NCAA appearances. Georgia won the team title with a 197.825 while Utah was third with a 197.275. Two-time defending champion UCLA's 197.150 garnered fourth while Michigan, 19.575, and Nebraska, 196.425, rounded out the Super Six. On the floor exercise, freshman Terin Humphrey scored a career best 9.95 and senior Alexis Brion added in a 9.925 to the Tide's season best total. On the vault, sophomore Brittany Comeaux threw a career best 9.95 to go with Miles' third 10.0 vault of the season. Senior Shannon Hrozek led the Tide off with a 9.9, a score matched by Humphrey. Freshman Kaitlin White posted a career best 9.875. Alabama started the night off with a 49.325 on the uneven bars, led by 9.9s from Miles and Humphrey while Hrozek and junior Mari Bayer both chipped 9.85s. On the balance beam only one Alabama gymnast, Humphrey with a 9.825, scored above a 9.8. The Tide's seniors, Hrozek, Brion and Michelle Reeser, All-Americans all, have now finished first, second twice and third at the NCAA Championships during their career. Large, Scott Lead Tide Past South Carolina, 6-4 Friday, April 22, 2005 TUSCALOOSA -- Junior right-hander T.J. Large allowed three hits over eight innings and Gabe Scott and Evan Bush each homered to lead the No. 15 University of Alabama Crimson Tide to a 6-4 victory over No. 8 South Carolina Gamecocks Friday night at The Joe in the weekend series opener. Despite struggling in the first inning, walking the first two Gamecock batters and giving up a two-run double to Jon Willard, Large was solid in his next seven innings, not giving up a run until Gamecock first baseman Steve Pearce hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth. These kind of games are always fun, said Large, especially when we win. The whole team was really into it tonight. I don't think I saw one person sitting on the bench all night. I think I had too much adrenaline in the first inning but then I finally calmed down and found the strike zone. That first inning is always my toughest. Large (6-3) went eight innings, giving up three hits and four runs. He struck out two and walked four. The Gamecocks (29-10, 9-7 SEC) were first on the scoreboard when Willard drove in shortstop Steven Tolleson and left fielder Michael Campbell, runners who were both walked, with a two run double to right center. Alabama (28-12, 10-6 SEC) jumped on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Scott, who extended his SEC leading 27 straight games in the bottom of the first, doubled to score designated hitter Allen Rice. Bush then slammed his 12th home run of the season -- a two run shot to left field, to give the Crimson Tide a 3-2 lead. Bama would add insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning when Scott hit a solo home run, his eighth of the year, to put the Tide up 4-2. With two outs and first baseman Zac Welch on first, right fielder Morrow Thomley hit a triple to left field, scoring Welch. A throwing error by South Carolina shortstop Steven Tolleson allowed Thomley to safely reach home and give Alabama a 6-2 lead. The lead was cut to 6-4 in the top of the ninth off of Pearce's two run blast. David Robertson was then called to the mound, earning his third save of the year by throwing a scoreless inning while striking out two Carolina batters. Alabama and Carolina meet in game two of this three game series with a 3:06 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, April 23. The game will be televised as the SEC Game of the Week by FSN South. UA will send sophomore lefty Wade LeBlanc (2-2 4.18 ERA) to the mound against USC senior right-hander Jason Fletcher (4-2, 2.50 ERA). GAME NOTES: *No. 15 Alabama beat No. 8 South Carolina 6-4 in the series opener at Sewell-Thomas Stadium Friday night. *Alabama is 7-6 against Top 25 teams this season and owns a 6-4 record against teams ranked in the Top 10. *Alabama won its 10th SEC game of the season, equaling its conference win total from last year. *Of Alabama's 16 SEC games, 10 have been decided by two runs or less. *Junior RHP T.J. Large (6-3, 2.40 ERA) won his sixth game of the season with a 6-4 win over No. 8 South Carolina. Large walked three of the first four batters he faced in the game and allowed two first-inning runs on Jon Williard's two-out double to right center field. *After the two-out double, Large did not allow another hit until back-to-back hits by Steven Tolleson and Steve Pearce in the ninth inning. Large 7 1/3 no-hit innings in the game. The Seminole, Fla., native gave up two hits in the ninth inning, including a two-run home run to Steve Pearce as USC cut the lead to 6-4. *Large threw 24 pitches in the first inning, with only 10 strikes. He threw 87 pitches the remainder of the game. *Freshman RHP David Robertson (6-3, 1.44 ERA, 3 SV) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. He has three of the Crimson Tide's six saves this season. *Robertson's save tonight was the first in an SEC game this year by Alabama. *Senior LF Gabe Scott (3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) singled off the top of the left-center field wall in the bottom of the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 27 consecutive games. Scott's streak ties Ole Miss' Brian Pettway for the longest hitting streak in the SEC this season. The 27-game hitting streak is also the third-longest in Alabama baseball history, tying David Magadan's streak as a true freshman (the first 27 games of his career) in 1981. *During the streak, Scott is batting .453 (43-for-95) with 24 runs scored, nine home runs and 25 RBI. *Scott has hit nine home runs this season, all since April 1st. 2005 Softball Team Shaping Into Best Statistical Team Ever Wednesday, April 20, 2005 While every year, a team looks to make a name for itself or etch its name in history, the 2005 version of Alabama softball seems to be doing just that, but they've gone about it rather quietly. After starting out the season rather slow offensively, the Tide has picked up the pieces and put them back together and is currently hitting .304 as a team, the third highest batting average in school history. Known for its propensity to hit the long ball, this year is no different as the team is right in the middle of where it usually is in April for home runs. However, the team's production in triples is up this year raising its overall slugging percentage to .472, the third highest in school history. The team's on-base percentage is currently at an all-time high (.394) as is its stolen-base percentage (.850). Offensively, we have so many weapons to choose from this year that an opponent can't zero in on one person and stop us, said Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy. In the circle and on the defensive side of the ball, the numbers are just as impressive. The pitching staff's ERA of 1.50 is the second lowest in school history while the opponent batting average (.199) is the lowest ever. The Tide pitching staff allows 8.44 strikeouts per game; the most of any previous Tide staff and its 11 saves is the most the team has ever recorded as well. Currently the Alabama trio of pitchers is 34 strikeouts away from recording the most in a season in school history. I can count on one hand the number of poor starting pitching performances we have had and that has made the difference between this year's team and last year. When the ball is put into play, the Crimson Tide has its number one all-time defense there to make the play posting a program best .971 fielding percentage. I am very pleased where this team stands right now. The leadership has been great so far in all phases of the team, Murphy continued. Another aspect of this team that the average fan can't see: they are great kids to coach. It's been a really fun year to coach. I think Aly (Habetz) and Vann (Stuedeman) would say that as well. Naturally there are still several games to play and averages and percentages have a tendency to fluctuate, but as of right now, there's nothing to say that this team isn't destined for greatness and poised to make a run at its first SEC Championship and a third trip to the Women's College World Series in six years. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Bryant Hall Finds New Life as Athletic Academic Center
TUSCALOOSA - Over the past 40 years, Bryant Hall has been a part of many historic events in the life of University of Alabama athletics, and on Friday the venerable old building will unveil a renovation that allows it to keep making history for years to come. Following 18 months of interior redesigning, Bryant Hall - the dorm - has been transformed into the Paul W. Bryant Academic Center. More than just fresh paint and new carpeting, Bryant Hall has been converted into a state-of-the-art academic facility that covers 52,300 square feet and features some of the most modern technology to benefit all of the over 425 Crimson Tide student-athletes. The building will be formally dedicated during ceremonies at 2 p.m. on Friday. A host of dignitaries, including members of the Board of Trustees, University of Alabama President, Dr. Robert Witt, Athletics Director Mal Moore and others are expected to be on hand. The Bryant Academic Center, which will serve as not only a functioning full-service academic facility but also as the home for the staff of the Center for Athletic Student Services (CASS) and the Champs' Lifeskills program, is the crown jewel in the Alabama athletic department's Crimson Tradition Fund facility enhancement campaign. The renovation project at Bryant Hall was completed for $10.3 million. This project has been priority one since we started the renovations of our athletic facilities, said UA athletics director Mal Moore. Academics is at the center of our mission at Alabama and we wanted to create a place that would aid all our student-athletes in their educational pursuits. I feel very strongly that Bryant Hall will benefit every student-athlete, not just during their years at Alabama, but for a lifetime. Among the building's many new amenities will be a 48-seat computer lab equipped with brand new equipment. The computer lab will also have 25 laptop computers available for student-athletes to check out and use on team road trips. The building features Math, English and writing labs along with 40 individual study rooms. A pair of 50-seat classrooms and a 140-seat lecture hall are also available. The classrooms in Bryant Hall will possess some cutting edge teaching devices as well, including digital overhead projectors and smart boards that allow instructors to interact with students on the go. Throughout the building there will be 16 information stations that can provide student-athletes with news about tutorials, study sessions and even practice schedules. There are also several student lounges located around the premises, giving student-athletes a more relaxed place to gather and study. We couldn't be more excited about being in our new home, said assistant athletics director for student services Jon Dever. There is no doubt that in terms of both aesthetics and services offered, this will be an outstanding facility and one of which everyone associated with the Crimson Tide can be proud. One of the brightest new additions to Bryant Hall will be located in the lobby of the building. The Crimson Tide Academic Hall of Fame, including plaques recognizing all of Alabama's Academic All-American selections, will be beautifully housed and displayed in the entry area. Another highlight of the renovation is a pair of VIP apartment suites. The rooms, which will be available for hosting visiting dignitaries to the University and the athletic department, harkens back to a bit of the buildings' original history as the old Bryant Hall had similar rooms that played host to luminaries such as Billy Graham and Robert Kennedy. Originally dedicated on May 8, 1965, Bryant Hall served as the home for Crimson Tide football and men's basketball players for over three decades. Constructed for $1 million in 1963 and equipped with rooms for 136 athletes and a dining hall to feed 150, Bryant Hall was one of the finest athletic dorms in its time. Named for then athletic director and head football coach Paul W. Bear Bryant, it was the first building in the state of Alabama named for a living person and required the state legislature to waive a law that prohibited buildings from being named after a living person. In the late 1990s, the NCAA passed legislation that did away with athletic-specific housing and dining so part of Bryant Hall was then turned into an academic center. The completion of the renovation and the rededication of Bryant Hall is an event that has folks around the Alabama athletic department extremely excited. Crimson Tide coaches see the advantages of the new facility not only in assisting in the overall development of their student-athletes but also in recruiting. I'm real excited, said UA head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried, who lived in Bryant Hall as a player for the Crimson Tide in the mid 1980s. I think it is a phenomenal facility. It is going to benefit our student-athletes like never before. It shows that there is a
[RollTideFan] Alabama Ready to Compete for a Fifth NCAA Championship
Alabama Ready to Compete for a Fifth NCAA Championship Wednesday, April 20, 2005 AUBURN, ALA -- With the practice day here at the 24th annual NCAA Gymnastics Championships in the books, Alabama is ready to make its run at a fifth national championship. The Crimson Tide is making its 23rd consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships, starting tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when it will face five other teams in attempt to move on to Friday night's team finals. Three teams from each of the two preliminary sessions on Thursday will advance to the Super Six. Alabama, which won the 2002, 1996, 1991 and 1988 NCAA Team Championships, Alabama enjoys a rich history of success at these championships, finishing in the top-10 every year since 1983, a stretch that includes 19 top-4 finishes. Alabama has also never lost an NCAA Championship hosted in the state of Alabama, winning the 2002, 1996 and 1991 national championships in Tuscaloosa. Obviously we are excited to be here in the state of Alabama, head coach Sarah Patterson said. Although we have made it 23 consecutive times, it never gets to be old. I am excited about it this year just like I was my first year. I can say from experience that the quality always seems to improve. There has never been any more quality here than this year. Legitimately, there are eight-to-nine teams who could win it. It is exciting and fun for athletes, coaches and fans alike. Coaches Sarah and David Patterson, in their 27th season leading the Crimson Tide, bring a veteran team to this year's championships, including three-time NCAA Champion Ashley Miles and All-American seniors Alexis Brion and Shannon Hrozek, along with junior All-American Mari Bayer. Miles won three individual titles at the 2005 SEC Championships and four at the NCAA Central Regional. We have made it 23 times, and I have been here for three of those times, Miles said. It never gets old. The Regionals are like a basketball game and now this is the final few minutes. The quality of competition here is great. Freshman Terin Humprey, a two-time silver medalist at this summer's Olympic Games as part of the U.S. squad, won the SEC and NCAA Central Region uneven bars titles. Terin is extremely excited about being here, Sarah Patterson said. She has spent a lot of time in the gym. When we were at the SEC Championship and had a fall, I remember her telling me when she came up next that she felt more pressure at that moment than she did at the Olympics. I think that speaks volumes about collegiate gymnastics. The Tide comes into this year's championships healthy and primed. Alabama has finished in the top-3 the last three years, including a third place finish a year ago. This is the first time that Auburn has hosted the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. We compete here regularly, but this looks so different from a dual meet, Sarah Patterson said. Obviously, we will have a lot of fans here but Georgia, LSU and Florida will also have respectable numbers. When you spend all the time, effort and energy putting this championship together, obviously you want to be involved. I was pulling for Auburn at the Regionals because I know they wanted to be here. I was pleased to see that they have four people competing. The afternoon session starts at 1 p.m. and will feature Utah, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Penn State. The evening session starts at 7 p.m. and will feature Alabama, two-time defending champion UCLA, Georgia, Florida, Iowa State and BYU. For ticket information, contact the Auburn Ticket Office at (1-800-282-1957) or online at www.auburntigers.com. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Florida LB waiting for Tide offer
Florida LB waiting for Tide offer LeBrandon Glover of Pensacola HS is expected to be one of the top prospects in northwest Florida this coming season. The 6-1, 218-pound linebacker with 4.6 speed has already collected offers from Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Illinois. Mississippi State is my favorite right now, Glover says. They told me that I'm the top linebacker on their board. My teammate [RB Courtney Jones] has already committed to them and my cousin [WR Adron Chambers] is going there too. I'm also friends with [Prichard-Blount LB] James Collins, and if Mississippi State goes after both of us, there's a chance that we might play together in college. Glover says an offer from the Tide would be very tough to turn down Alabama is still one of my favorites and I like them a lot, Glover says. I went to their spring game and it was good to get back up there. They haven't offered me yet, but if they do, I'd give a lot of thought to committing to Alabama. I've thought about committing before the season starts, but I don't know for sure right now. I'm going to try and see what I can do this summer at the camps and combines. Glover plans a busy summer on the camp circuit with stops at Vanderbilt, Auburn and Mississippi State. He'll participate in the NIKE Combines at Florida State and Ole Miss. And he'll join his teammates at the 7-on-7 camp at Jacksonville State. Notes: Glover made two unofficial visits to Alabama this spring. He also took in Junior Day at Mississippi State. He will be recruited by Tide OL coach Bob Connelly. Glover carries a 2.95 GPA. He'll take the SAT in May and the ACT in June. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
