I don't know what ERMC stands for, but it is a private enterprise
unaffiliated with the speedway and manages the *private* lots, like the
mall. They are known to gouge people, even locals who go in for shopping.
You probably would have fared better at one of the speedway controlled lots.
As for traffic control it sucks during all special events, yet they never
seem to improve it. That's why those of us who live here avoid that side of
town until you race folks leave!

[RollTideFan] [Non-Bama] Muslims & Pork

2004-09-30 Thread M Laborde
Sorry. Wrong SUBJECT line in the orifginal post. Damn auto-complete.

From another (non-Bama) list. I cannot confirm the story,
but it is great reading.

"Just before World War 1, there were a number of terrorist
attacks on the United States forces in the Phillippines by
Muslim extremist's.

So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them
tied to posts for execution his men bringing in two pigs
and slaughtered them in front of the horrified terrorist.
Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy
animals.

Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't
even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products.
To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, it's blood,
etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise ( and those
virgins ) and doomed to hell.
The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood,
and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing
squad.

The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist's
bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc.
They let the 50th man go. And for the next forty-two years,
there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in
the world.

Maybe it is time for this segement of history to repeat
itself, maybe in Iraq?
The question is, where do we find another Black Jack
Pershing ?"

bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc.
They let the 50th man go. And for the next forty-two years,
there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in
the world.

Maybe it is time for this segement of history to repeat
itself, maybe in Iraq?
The question is, where do we find another Black Jack
Pershing ?"

If Bush loses the upcoming election, I hope he spends

[RollTideFan] [non-Bama] Bush administration completes get-tough plan for Syria

2004-09-28 Thread M Laborde

Bush administration completes get-tough plan for Syria

SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM
Tuesday, September 28, 2004
The Bush administration has drafted contingency plans for bringing military and
economic pressure against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Officials said the administration has determined that diplomacy has failed to resolve
U.S. concerns that Syria has been working to destabilize the interim government in
Iraq.

They said the Assad regime has been harboring senior operatives of Abu Mussib Al
Zarqawi, regarded as the most lethal insurgent in Iraq, aides to Saddam Hussein as
well as Iraqi nuclear scientists as part of a Syrian policy coordinated with Iran.

On Monday, the State Department reiterated its criticism of Syria for its harboring
groups deemed as terrorists, Middle East Newsline reported. The department refused to
condemn the Sept. 26 assassination of a Hamas leader in Damascus in a car-bombing
attributed to Israel.

"If Americans are dying in Iraq because of Syrian policies, then this is something we
are not going to tolerate," a senior official said.

The official, who refused to be identified, did not report any progress in U.S.
efforts to end Syria's support of the insurgency movement in Iraq or other issues in
dispute between Damascus and Washington.

Officials warned that unless Syria changes its policy within the next few weeks, the
administration would consider economic and military measures against Damascus that
would intensify in 2005. They said the Defense Department has drafted a range of
military options meant to put Damascus on the defensive and encourage insurrection
within Syria.
Last week, Secretary of State Colin Powell praised Syria's redeployment of more than
3,000 troops in Lebanon and suggested the onset of a new atmosphere in relations.

"I can't go into details on this, but they gave me some information with respect to
financial activities [to insurgents in Iraq] and how we can cooperate more fully on
that," Powell said in a Sept. 24 meeting with the New York Times editorial board.
"We're looking at ways to improve our intelligence exchange."

Two weeks ago, Syria and the United States met in Damascus in what officials termed
was a hard-nosed review of bilateral relations that focused on the Assad regime's
policy in Iraq.

The U.S. delegation, headed by Assistant Secretary of State William Burns contained
members of the Pentagon, White House and National Security Council.

The talks reviewed Syrian WMD programs, support for the insurgency in Iraq and Syria's
harboring of billions of dollars sent by the Saddam Hussein regime in 2002 and 2003.

"What we said in Damascus is that this has to stop," the senior official said. "Our
message to Syria was a warning that this is very serious. Because this means Syria
shares responsibility for the killing of Americans and Iraqis, and it has to stop."
At the meeting, Damascus agreed to participate in talks with Iraq and U.S. Central
Command to launch cooperation that would halt the flow of insurgents and weapons from
Syria, officials said. Officials said the Assad regime was warned that the failure of
the military talks, which began on Tuesday in Damascus, could trigger what they termed
a major deterioration in U.S. relations with Syria.

"Our job is to convince them that the risk of undermining us is much greater than the
opposite," the senior official said.

During the September meeting in Damascus, officials said, the U.S. delegation
presented the Assad regime with evidence of Syrian government aid to the insurgency
movement in Iraq. The delegation argued that Syria has intensified its support of Al
Zarqawi and pro-Saddam forces in an effort to torpedo Iraqi elections scheduled in
January 2005.

"It's not just a question of border control," the senior official said. "Institutions
within Syria are actively colluding with our enemies in Iraq."

"Terrorists and their supporters beget a cycle of violence that is best addressed
through the end of support of terror," State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli
said. "We have made it clear that in numerous meetings with the Syrians that we think
it's in their interests, in the interests of the region, to end support for terrorist
organizations and terrorist individuals operating from their territory."

[RollTideFan] [Non-Bama] A Funny

2004-09-23 Thread M Laborde
This is an excellent example why lawyers should never ask a question of a witness if
they aren't prepared for the answer:

In a trial, a Southern small town prosecuting attorney called his
first witness to the stand. She was a grandmother-type elderly woman.

He approached her and asked his first question,"Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've know you since you were a
young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on
your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think
you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to
anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The Lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and
asked, "Mrs. Jones do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster,
too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal
relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state.
Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women, one of them was your
wife. Yes, I know him."

The defense attorney almost died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench, and in a very quiet voice,
said: "If either of you bastards asks her if she knows me, I'll throw your sorry asses
in jail for contempt."

There was no further question for this witness. Obviously, she knew too much.

The Russian's already did that. The "democratically" elected government
was put in place by Russia, and controlled by Russia. What the

Russia Threatens to Strike Terror Bases
Sep 8, 2:58 PM (ET)
By STEVE GUTTERMAN

MOSCOW (AP) - A wounded Russia threatened Wednesday to strike against terrorists "in
any region of the world," offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the
killing or capture of Chechnya's top rebel leaders, and criticized the United States
for its willingness to hold talks with Chechen separatists.

The announcements marked a show of resolve aimed at Russia's stunned citizens, as well
as Western countries President Vladimir Putin accuses of hindering its fight against
terror, in the wake of three attacks that killed more than 400 people in the past two
weeks.

In a nationally televised meeting, Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov also briefed
Putin on the investigation into the taking of more than 1,200 hostages in a school
last week in the southern town of Beslan.

His was the first official acknowledgment that the number of hostages had been so
high; the government initially said about 350 people were seized. A regional official
later said the number had been 1,181.

Col.-Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, chief of the general staff of Russia's armed forces,
asserted Russia's right to strike terrorists beyond its borders.

"As for carrying out preventive strikes against terrorist bases ... we will take all
measures to liquidate terrorist bases in any region of the world," he told reporters.

Baluyevsky made his comments alongside NATO's supreme allied commander in Europe, Gen.
James Jones, after talks on Russia-NATO military cooperation, including anti-terror
efforts.

European Union officials reacted cautiously to Baluyevsky's statements, with
spokeswoman Emma Udwin saying she could not be sure whether they represented
government policy. Udwin said the 25-nation EU is against "extra-judicial killings" in
form of pre-emptive strikes.

Russian leaders have previously claimed the right to attack terrorists beyond the
country's borders - tacitly threatening neighboring Georgia that Moscow would pursue
Chechen rebels allegedly sheltering on its territory. Two Russian agents

Cleric supports targeting children
By Rajeev Syal
(Filed: 09/05/2004)

An extremist Islamic cleric based in Britain said yesterday that he would support
hostage-taking at British schools if carried out by terrorists with a just cause.

Omar Bakri Mohammed, the spiritual leader of the extremist sect al-Muhajiroun, said
that holding women and children hostage would be a reasonable course of action for a
Muslim who has suffered under British rule.

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Mohammed said: "If an Iraqi Muslim
carried out an attack like that in Britain, it would be justified because Britain has
carried out acts of terrorism in Iraq.

"As long as the Iraqi did not deliberately kill women and children, and they were
killed in the crossfire, that would be okay."

Mr Mohammed, 44, who lives in Edmonton, north London, but is originally from Syria,
also claimed that the Chechen rebels were not responsible for the deaths of more than
350 people - at least half of them children - who are so far known to have died in
Beslan.

"The Mujahideen [Chechen rebels] would not have wanted to kill those people, because
it is strictly forbidden as a Muslim to deliberately kill women and children. It is
the fault of the Russians," he said.

The father of seven came to Britain in 1985 after being deported from Saudi Arabia
because of his membership of a banned group. He has since been given leave by the Home
Office to remain in Britain for five years but the Government is reviewing his status.

He gave an interview yesterday to promote a "celebratory" conference in London next
Saturday to commemorate the third anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Andrew Dismore, the Labour MP for Hendon, was infuriated by Mr Mohammed's comments.
"That sounds to me like incitement and I will report him to Scotland Yard," he said.
"It is an insult to most moderate Muslims, who are sick of people like this claiming
to represent them."

[RollTideFan] [Non-Bama] Iran May Attack US In Iraq

2004-08-19 Thread Lew Cipher
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1512&u=/afp/20040818/wl_afp/iran_nuclear_us_israel_040818201404&printer=1

Iran warns of preemptive strike to prevent attack on nuclear sites

Wed Aug 18, 4:14 PM ET

DOHA (AFP) - Iranian Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani warned that Iran might
launch a preemptive strike against US forces in the region to prevent an attack
on its nuclear facilities.

"We will not sit (with arms folded) to wait for what others will do to us. Some
military commanders in Iran are convinced that preventive operations which the
Americans talk about are not their monopoly," Shamkhani told Al-Jazeera TV when
asked if Iran would respond to an American attack on its nuclear facilities.

"America is not the only one present in the region. We are also present, from
Khost to Kandahar in Afghanistan; we are present in the Gulf and we can be
present in Iraq (news - web sites)," said Shamkhani, speaking in Farsi to the
Arabic-language news channel through an interpreter.

"The US military presence (in Iraq) will not become an element of strength (for
Washington) at our expense. The opposite is true, because their forces would
turn into a hostage" in Iranian hands in the event of an attack, he said.

Shamkhani, who was asked about the possibility of an American or Israeli strike
against Iran's atomic power plant in Bushehr, added: "We will consider any
strike against our nuclear installations as an attack on Iran as a whole, and
we will retaliate with all our strength.

"Where Israel is concerned, we have no doubt that it is an evil entity, and it
will not be able to launch any military operation without an American green
light. You cannot separate the two."

A commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted in the Iranian press
earlier Wednesday as saying that Tehran would strike the Israeli reactor at
Dimona if Israel attacks the Islamic republic's own burgeoning nuclear
facilities.

"If Israel fires one missile at Bushehr atomic power plant, it should
permanently forget about Dimona nuclear center, where it produces and keeps its
nuclear weapons, and Israel would be responsible for the terrifying consequence
of this move," General Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr warned.

Iran's controversial bid to generate nuclear power at its plant being built at
Bushehr is seen by arch-enemies Israel and the United States as a cover for
nuclear weapons development.

The latest comments mark an escalation in an exchange of threats between Israel
and Iran in recent weeks, leading to speculation that there may be a repeat of
Israel's strike against Iraqi nuclear facilities at Osirak in 1981.

Iran insists that its nuclear intentions are peaceful, while pointing at its
enemy's alleged nuclear arsenal, which Israel neither confirms nor denies
possessing.

Shamkhani told Al-Jazeera it was not possible "from a practical standpoint" to
destroy Iran's nuclear programs because they are the product of national skills
"which cannot be eliminated by military means."

He also warned that Iran would consider itself no longer bound by its
commitments to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the event of an
attack.

"The execution of such threats (to attack Iran's nuclear installations) would
mean that our cooperation with the IAEA led to feeding information about our
nuclear facilities to the attacking side, which (in turn) means that we would no
longer be bound by any of our obligations" to the nuclear watchdog, he said.

Diplomats said in Vienna Tuesday that the IAEA would not say in a report next
month whether Iran's nuclear activities are of a military nature, nor will it
recommend bringing the case before the UN Security Council.

The IAEA board is due to deliver the report on Iran's nuclear activities during
a meeting at the organization's headquarters in Vienna from September 13 after
the last of a group of IAEA inspectors returned from Iran last week.

The UN's nuclear agency is conducting a major probe into Iran's bid to generate
electricity through nuclear power.

The Islamic republic has agreed to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment
pending the completion of the IAEA probe, but is working on other parts of the
fuel cycle and has recently resumed making centrifuges used for enrichment.

[RollTideFan] [Non-Bama] Israel Cave Linked to John the Baptist

2004-08-16 Thread M Laborde
Kinda cool.

=
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040816/D84GIE8O0.html

AP: Israel Cave Linked to John the Baptist

Aug 16, 5:28 PM (ET)
By KARIN LAUB

KIBBUTZ TZUBA, Israel (AP) - Archaeologists think they've found a cave where John the
Baptist baptized many of his followers - basing their theory on thousands of shards
from ritual jugs, a stone used for foot cleansing and wall carvings telling the story
of the biblical preacher.

Only a few artifacts linked to New Testament figures have ever been found in the Holy
Land, and the cave is potentially a major discovery in biblical archaeology.

"John the Baptist, who was just a figure from the Gospels, now comes to life," British
archaeologist Shimon Gibson said during an exclusive tour of the cave given to The
Associated Press.

But some scholars said Gibson's finds aren't enough to support his theory, and one
colleague said that short of an inscription with John's name in the cave, there could
never be conclusive proof of his presence there.

John, a distant relative of Jesus - their mothers were kin, according to the Bible -
was a fiery preacher with a message of repentance and a considerable following.

Tradition says he was born in the village of Ein Kerem, which today is part of modern
Jerusalem. Just 2.5 miles away, on the land of Kibbutz Tzuba, a communal farm, the
cave lies hidden in a limestone hill - 24 yards long, four yards deep and four yards
wide.

It was carved by the Israelites in the Iron Age, sometime between 800 B.C. and 500
B.C, the scientists said. It apparently was used from the start as a ritual immersion
pool, preceding the Jewish tradition of the ritual bath.

Over the centuries, the cave filled with mud and sediment, leaving only a tiny opening
that was hidden by trees and bushes. Yet in recent years, it had occasional visitors -
Reuven Kalifon, an immigrant from Cleveland who teaches Hebrew at the kibbutz, took
his students spelunking.

They would crawl through the narrow slit at the mouth of the cave, all the way to the
back wall, though they saw nothing but dirt and walls. In December 1999, Kalifon asked
Gibson, a friend, to take a closer look.

Gibson, who has excavated in the Holy Land for more than 30 years, moved a few
boulders near the walls and laid bare a crude carving of a head. Excited, he organized
a full-fledged excavation.

Over the next five years, Gibson and his team, including volunteers from the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, cleared out layers of soil, picking up
about 250,000 shards from small jugs apparently used in purification rituals.

The explorers uncovered 28 steps leading to the bottom of the cave. On the right, a
niche is carved into the wall - typical of those used in Jewish ritual baths for
discarding the clothes before immersion. Near the end of the stairs, the team found an
oval stone with a foot-shaped indentation - about a shoe size 11. Just above, a
soapdish-like niche apparently held ritual oil that would flow through a small channel
onto the believer's right foot.

On the water-covered floor of the cave, stones and boulders were moved aside by the
worshippers and a middle path was filled with gravel, said Egon Lass, an
archaeological consultant at Wheaton College, near Chicago, who also worked on the dig.

Crude images were carved on the walls, near the ceiling, and Gibson said they tell the
story of John's life.

One is the figure of the man Gibson spotted on his first visit to the cave. The man
appears to have an unruly head of hair and wears a tunic with dots, apparently meant
to suggest an animal hide. He grasps a staff and holds up his other hand in a gesture
of proclamation.

James Tabor, a Bible scholar from the University of North Carolina, said there is
little doubt this is John himself. The Gospels say that John was a member of the
Nazarites, a sect whose followers didn't cut their hair, and that he adopted the dress
of the ancient prophets, including a garment woven of camel's hair.

On the opposite wall is a carving of a face that could be meant to symbolize John's
severed head. The preacher had his head cut off by Herod Antipas after he dared take
the ruler to task over an illicit affair.

But the images are from the Byzantine era, apparently carved by monks who associated
the site with John, following local folklore, Gibson and Tabor said.

"Unfortunately, we didn't find any inscriptions" that would conclusively link the cave
to John, Tabor said.

Still, Gibson, who heads the Jerusalem Archaeological Field Unit, a private research
group, argues that the finds and the proximity of John's hometown are strong evidence
the cave was used by the preacher.

"All these elements are coming together and fill in the picture of the life and times
of John the Baptist," said Gibson, who has written a book about the dig, "The Cave of
John the Baptist," to be published this week.

Saddam agents on Syria border helped move banned materials

By Rowan Scarborough
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Saddam Hussein periodically removed guards on the Syrian border and replaced
them with his own intelligence agents who supervised the movement of banned
materials between the two countries, U.S. investigators have discovered.
The recent discovery by the Bush administration's Iraq Survey Group
(ISG) is fueling speculation, but is not proof, that the Iraqi dictator
moved prohibited weapons of mass destruction (WMD) into Syria before the
March 2003 invasion by a U.S.-led coalition.

Two defense sources told The Washington Times that the ISG has
interviewed Iraqis who told of Saddam's system of dispatching his trusted
Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS) to the border, where they would send border
inspectors away.
The shift was followed by the movement of trucks in and out of Syria
suspected of carrying materials banned by U.N. sanctions. Once the shipments
were made, the agents would leave and the regular border guards would resume
their posts.
"If you leave it to border guards, then the border guards could stop the
trucks and extract their 10 percent, just like the mob would do," said a
Pentagon official who asked not to be named. "Saddam's family was
controlling the black market, and it was a good opportunity for them to make
money."
Sources said Saddam and his family grew rich from this black market and
personally dispatched his dreaded intelligence service to the border to make
sure the shipments got through.
The ISG is a 1,400-member team organized by the Pentagon and CIA to hunt
for Saddam's suspected stockpiles of WMD, such as chemical and biological
agents. So far, the search has failed to find such stockpiles, which were
the main reason for President Bush ordering the invasion of Iraq to remove
Saddam.
But there is evidence of unusually heavy truck traffic into Syria in the
days before the attack, and with it, speculation that some of the trucks
contained the banned weapons.
"Of course, it's always suspicious," the Pentagon official said.
The source said the ISG has confirmed the practice of IIS agents going
to the border. Investigators also have heard from Iraqi sources that this
maneuver was done days before the war at a time of brisk cross-border
movements.
That particular part of the disclosures has not been positively
confirmed, the officials said, although it dovetails with Saddam's system of
switching guards at a time when contraband was shipped.
The United States spotted the heavy truck traffic via satellite imagery
before the war. But spy cameras cannot look through truck canopies, and the
ISG has not been able to determine whether any weapons were sent to Syria
for hiding.
In an interview in October, retired Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper Jr., who
heads the U.S. agency that processes and analyzes satellite imagery, said he
thinks that Saddam's underlings hid banned weapons of mass destruction
before the war.
"I think personally that those below the senior leadership saw what was
coming, and I think they went to some extraordinary lengths to dispose of
the evidence," said Gen. Clapper, who heads the National Geospatial
Intelligence Agency. "I'll call it an 'educated hunch.' "
He added, "I think probably in the few months running up prior to the
onset of combat that I think there was probably an intensive effort to
disperse into private homes, move documentation and materials out of the
country. I think there are any number of things that they would have done."
Of activity on the Syrian border, Gen. Clapper said, "There is no
question that there was a lot of traffic, increase in traffic up to the
immediate onset of combat and certainly during Iraqi Freedom. ... The
obvious conclusion one draws is the sudden upturn, uptick in traffic which
may have been people leaving the scene, fleeing Iraq and unquestionably, I'm
sure, material as well."
He also said, "Based on what we saw prior to the onset of hostilities,
we certainly felt there were indications of WMD activity. ... Actually
knowing what is going on inside a building is quite a different thing than,
say, this facility may well be a place where there may be WMD."

Saddam agents on Syria border helped move banned materials

By Rowan Scarborough
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Saddam Hussein periodically removed guards on the Syrian border and replaced them with
his own intelligence agents who supervised the movement of banned materials between
the two countries, U.S. investigators have discovered.
The recent discovery by the Bush administration's Iraq Survey Group (ISG) is
fueling speculation, but is not proof, that the Iraqi dictator moved prohibited
weapons of mass destruction (WMD) into Syria before the March 2003 invasion by a
U.S.-led coalition.

Two defense sources told The Washington Times that the ISG has interviewed Iraqis
who told of Saddam's system of dispatching his trusted Iraqi Intelligence Service
(IIS) to the border, where they would send border inspectors away.
The shift was followed by the movement of trucks in and out of Syria suspected of
carrying materials banned by U.N. sanctions. Once the shipments were made, the agents
would leave and the regular border guards would resume their posts.
"If you leave it to border guards, then the border guards could stop the trucks
and extract their 10 percent, just like the mob would do," said a Pentagon official
who asked not to be named. "Saddam's family was controlling the black market, and it
was a good opportunity for them to make money."
Sources said Saddam and his family grew rich from this black market and personally
dispatched his dreaded intelligence service to the border to make sure the shipments
got through.
The ISG is a 1,400-member team organized by the Pentagon and CIA to hunt for

going on inside a building is quite a different thing than, say, this facility may

The Iraq Survey Group, which periodically briefs senior officials and Congress, is
due to deliver its next report in September. In addition to interviewing hundreds of
Iraqis, the ISG has collected and cataloged millions of pages of documents, not all of
which have been fully examined.
Although Syria and Iraq competed for influence in the region, they shared the same
Ba'athist socialist ideology and maintained close ties at certain government levels.
The United States accused Syria during the war of harboring some of Saddam's inner
circle.

2004-08-12 15:36:55

BEIJING, Aug.12 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian scientists said they have discovered the
wreck of an alien device at the site of an unexplained explosion in Siberia almost a
hundred years ago, China Daily reported today, citing the Interfax news agency as the
source.

The scientists, who belong to the Tunguska space phenomenon public state fund,
said they found the remains of an extra-terrestrial device that allegedly crashed near
the Tunguska river in Siberia in 1908.

Their findings also include a 50-kilogram (110-pound) rock which they have sent to
the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk for analysis.

The Tunguska blast, in a desolate part of Siberia, remains one of the 20th
century's biggest scientific mysteries.

On June 30, 1908, what is widely believed to be a meteorite exploded a few
kilometers above the Tunguska river, in a blast that was felt hundreds of kilometers
(miles) away and devastated over 2,000 square kilometers of Siberian forest.

Too much anti-Bush hysteria It can leave others suffering from a classic case of
overkill
James Lileks
August 12, 2004

Do you suffer from Sudden Bush Hatred Fatigue Syndrome?

It's easy to diagnose. It often strikes at a bookstore. You walk in looking for a
breezy summer read, and piled near the door are stacks and stacks of angry tomes about
the perfidy of Usurper Bush.

He's a tool of big oil, small minds. He's a scarily devout Jesus-freak Christian and
the dupe of Saudi Wahhabist puppetmasters. He led the country to war on bizarre and
fabricated assumptions -- sure, Clinton made Iraqi regime change standard American
policy, but that was just a scarecrow to stick in the field. Plus, George W. Bush is
Satan! Just look at the cover of Jim Hightower's book, where the author draws devil
horns and scribbles a mustache and goatee on a Bush poster. Bush isn't just wrong.
He's bad. Super-extra evil. Get it? Get it? Oh, and buy this book.

You decline the opportunity. You wander over to periodicals and flip open the current
Esquire. There's a story on stem-cell research. The author's subtitle: "How the
president is trying to kill my daughter."

Yes, of course, you think. (How weary your inner voice sounds.) That's precisely what
he is trying to do. That is the president's specific objective in life: Kill sick
people. It makes him happy. Every night he puts his cloven hooves up on the desk and
thinks of the people he's offed today. Ahh. Life is good.

You put the magazine away. The bookstore almost feels like enemy territory, or perhaps
the embassy of some neutral but vaguely brackish nation. Do you belong? You don't hate
Bush. You may not love him, but your marrow doesn't bubble at the thought of his name.

Do you feel somewhat estranged when you enter a bookstore? Sudden Bush Hatred Fatigue
Syndrome.

Of course, not everyone hates Bush.

One can understand why Southerners like him, since they're all two-toothed crackers
with gun racks and Klan sheets neatly folded in the trunk in case they drive by a good
ol'-fashioned flaming cross. Right?

It's harder to understand why putatively normal people like him. These creatures are
frankly incomprehensible to any right-thinking person. Maybe they're just so full of
Fox News and Rush Limbaugh they don't understand that their drinking water is now
composed entirely of arsenic, or that we have completely squandered the goodwill of
several hundred chain-smoking French intellectuals.

But ponder for a moment those who neither love Bush nor loathe him. Consider how that
stack of anti-Bush books looks to them, how tired they feel when Will Smith pops up in
the German press insisting that Bush lied. How weary they feel when Bruce Springsteen
-- the Boss! -- joins a musical caravan to cross the nation and warn against the
looming horror of another Bush term. "Gee, Bruce can both sing and strum a guitar. He
must know something I don't."

It's hard to tell how SBHFS will affect the vote. This group could go either way.

They could so weary of the incessant hysteria that they'll be willing to reward the
frothers, if only to shut them up. If I vote for John Kerry, will you be happy? Will
that do it?

The answer would be Yes! That'll do it!

Well, that, and nationalized health care, tax hikes on small businesses, the Kyoto
treaty, fealty to the United Nations, shipping nuclear fuel to the Iranians to make
them act nice, leaving Iraq ASAP and ushering in what Kerry calls a more "sensitive"
war on terrorism. (We will use marshmallow bullets, perhaps.) All that plus vast
federally funded embryo farms, and they'll be happy. For a while. Then we'll have to
do something about that "In God We Trust" nonsense on the coins.

On the other hand, SBHFS sufferers might hope that a vote for Bush would cap the
geyser for good. His foes have said all they can say; could they possibly hate him any
more?

Of course they could. If Bush takes out Iranian nuclear bomb facilities before the
election, it'll be good for another 50 books. Now do you see how evil he is? First
Iraq, then Iran -- good Lord, is no one safe?

(06-28) 19:03 PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

The leftiest big city on the Left Coast was Clinton country
on Monday, with former President Clinton continuing his
blockbuster book tour and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton
headlining a Democratic fund-raiser where she vowed to
defeat the Republicans' "extraordinarily ruthless machine."

Headlining an appearance with other Democratic women
senators on behalf of Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is up
for re-election this year, Hillary Clinton told several
hundred supporters -- some of whom had ponied up as much
as $10,000 to attend -- to expect to lose some of the tax
cuts passed by President Bush if Democrats win the White
House and control of Congress.

"Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may
have helped you," Sen. Clinton said. "We're saying that for
America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut
that short and not give it to you. We're going to take
things away from you on behalf of the common good."

Just blocks away at San Francisco's historic Ferry Building,
President Clinton kicked off the latest leg of his West Coast
tour promoting his best-selling book, "My Life." Wearing a
navy blue suit and a rust-colored tie, Clinton signed books
for at least 3,000 people, many of whom had waited hours
under brilliant sunshine to catch a glimpse of him.

At one point, Clinton stopped the fast-moving line of fans
to pose for a photo with 14-year old Thomas Nelson and his
12-year old brother Joseph, who had traveled 50 miles with
their father from Petaluma.

"I've never shaken the hand of a president," said Thomas,
who added that he had one grandma who couldn't stand Clinton
and one who thought he was the best president ever.

"Even better than George Washington," said Thomas.

While Sen. Clinton's duties in Washington and the former
president's far-flung speaking engagements can keep them apart
for weeks at a time, friends said the Clintons' joint visit to
the Bay Area was a homecoming of sorts for both of them.

As president, Clinton visited California some 70 times and
focused much of his political and fund-raising energies on
the heavily Democratic San Francisco Bay area. The visits
by both Clintons increased while their daughter, Chelsea,
was a student at Stanford University in Palo Alto.

"He was here so dad gum much when he was president that outside
of Arkansas, his highest level of support is probably the Bay
Area," said Martha Whetstone, executive director of the Bar
Association of San Francisco and a longtime friend of both
Clintons. "And San Francisco has always been Hillary country.
They get her here -- there's a real appreciation for independent,
intelligent women."

The Clintons were following largely separate schedules throughout
the day, with Sen. Clinton heading two hours south to Monterey
County to appear at a public policy forum hosted by former White
House chief of staff Leon Panetta, and President Clinton headlining
a fund raiser Monday evening for the American Himalayan Foundation,
a charity run by Sen. Dianne Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum.

Sen. Clinton called the transfer of sovereignty from the U.S.-led
coalition to an interim Iraqi government two days early a "positive
step" but said it was too early to predict if the new government
would be successful.

"Whether they take over today or take over Wednesday, the problems
are still the same," she said.

Before leaving the forum, Sen. Clinton was asked what she thought
of her husband's book. "I loved it," she replied. "You've got to
read all of it."

On Tuesday, President Clinton will continue his book tour at
several stops around the Bay Area and will be the star attraction
at a fund-raiser for House Democrats.

With Boxer leading her Republican opponent, Bill Jones, by a wide
margin in recent public polls and California considered safely in
Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's hands, the Clintons'
visit served more as a vehicle to promote progressive political
activism than to move a lot of votes, according to Bruce Cain, a
political analyst at University of California, Berkeley.

"There's a lot of stirring up of the Democratic base -- the juice
is flowing among Democratic activists in an unprecedented way right
now," Cain said. "It comes at a time when groups need to get
mobilized to make contributions and get themselves organized to go
out and do grass roots activity in battleground states."

California Republican Chairman Duf Sundheim said that while the
Clintons were welcome to come to the state and express their views,
"history shows their influence is minimal."

He pointed to both Cl
