Re: [scots-l] Legacy of the Scottish Fiddle Vol 2

Well, I wouldn't exactly call it instrumental versions of songs. Most of those tunes were around as fiddle music before Burns got to them and set songs to them! That's very true; when I spoke of fiddle music though, I was thinking more of the reels, jigs, strathspeys and airs that dominate

[scots-l] Legacy of the Scottish Fiddle Vol 2

2004-10-27 Thread strings
I picked up a copy of Alasdair's new CD. It contains the tunes of the time of Robert Burns. So it isn't a cd of fiddle music. It's more a CD of instrumental versions of songs from that time. It has a less modern sound than anything else I can think of that Alasdair has done. It features Natalie

[scots-l] Texas Scottish Festival

I went to the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games last weekend. John Taylor, Alasdair Fraser, and Brian McNeill were all there, along with many other musicians. I wrote up an essay and posted some photos: www.2fiddles.com http://www.2fiddles.com/games/tsf04/TSF.html

Hi folks, I've been attempting to learn to play the whistle lately [...] But since whistles don't have drones, there isn't anything magic about an A note anymore, is there? So I don't have to do cuts from an A note, maybe? I've learned most of what I know about whistle from Irish whistle

[scots-l] Laura Risk _Celtic Dialog_

2003-12-05 Thread strings
Hi all, My dad bought me the CD _Celtic Dialog_ by Laura Risk for Christmas. When I saw the title, my first thought was ug. It's on Dorian, and was released in 1999. But I've been to a few workshops that Laura has done (she's a great teacher, if you ever get the chance). Anyway, I played the cd

Yes, and Calliope House doesn't sound as good in D, as it does in E. Quite right, and it lies well on the fiddle in E as well. I've never understood why one would bother to put it into D. The Irish flute guys put it into D so they could play it. I hear it played in D by fiddlers more

[scots-l] New fiddle book

I picked up a new book on fiddle called Scottish Fiddling (I think). It's published by the Scottish Arts Council. It has three sections: technique, tune types, and regional styles. It also has a CD, with tunes selected to illustrate the techniques, tune types and styles. I think it was around

[scots-l] Question on modes

2003-07-21 Thread strings
I understand the mechanics of modes, at least sort of. Suppose I'm playing in Dmix, on the fiddle. I know in Dmaj I would play my F# and my C# extra sharp, since they are leading tones. So getting back to Dmix, do I still play my F# extra sharp? Is the C-nat (the 7th) played sharper than normal?

I think you're a mixing up key-mode with scale. Not as much mixing them up as trying to avoid doing so... I know that mode and key signature are not the same thing -- I'm trying to find out how the oh-so-natural just intonation of classical violin works with fiddle's modes (compared to key
