A few years ago, Dyson and Press published a paper[1] that showed that
generosity and extortion are finely balanced
What you have said is unobjectionable, though I am not entirely sure if you
are making an argument or stating a tautology. I understood it as

The mental processes that underpin empathy are the ones I use to manipulate

My problem with empathy, I have found, is believing I have it.
Example 934 of the problems arising from believing my own propaganda.

For me, understanding an opposite viewpoint is at least as hard as
visualising a 4-d cube. With a systematic approach and a fair bit of
effort, I might be able to improve my understanding but there is always the
feeling that it is lacking. I'm sure the married people on the list know
what I am

Do answers have meaning independent of questions? The questions of Socrates
were answers in disguise. A little passive-aggresive, imho.
They are the same thing, no?

Heard recently (on YouTube): meaning is a jumper you have to knit yourself.
And reality unravels it?
Heh. The artwork is very evocative, like Mignola. Sometimes you can answer
a question with a question.
And my answer to the final question is: What else are you going to do?
Hopefully that is mysterious enough not to need spoiler alerts :)

Excellent point on the question of caste. We seem to be seeing some

Taking off from Udhay's connection to oil prices, this seems to be a
situation that benefits all the allies. Tehran took a step up with the oil
field bombings and this is a further escalation. It is a no-downside
outcome from the perspective of the chief paymasters, Riyadh and DC. I'm

I am setting up a small viewing at my workplace. The room can
accommodate about 5-6 people in comfort. If there is a quorum, we can

The location is

Hey folks, how much longer will you be around? I just got off work and
would be happy to join a dinner plan, if any.

Welcome Alok!
I do enjoy reading your newsletter. I detested the email newsletter format
at first but I have grown to like it.

There is a series[1] produced by Shekhar Kapur on YouTube which I found
quite illuminating. I wouldn't say that it is a serious historical work but
it does have some interesting nuggets of information in it.
