What happened is that the silver agglomerated into very large particles. Particles of what? Who knows! Red indicates a certain size range, not neccesarily composition. Probably, there's something in your tap water that acts as a catylist. Silver itself is an industrial catylist.

You could just store the electrodes in distilled water. Keep an eye out for any changes around the adapter. Seems to me that one an electrode gets a grey or black surface on it, that alone will protect it from tarnish. I've never had a problem with it...only a very slight change on old
