if it is an IDE HDD it could also be the BIOS.
check the BIOS as some HDDs can be set to NORMAL, LBA or LARGE.
sometimes an incorrect setting here can lead to woes.

I actually think it is unlikely to be the harddrive. As long as when
you install a new distro you are deleting any existing partitions and
you choose to check for bad blocks when creating the new partition
filesystems. you are getting a clean disk. All IDE disks have onboard

Hi all,
Sorry for the long post but I'm trying to include as much relevant
information as I can identify.
I've installed FC4 on a:
P4
3GHz
1G RAM
machine.
A few months ago I installed FC4 on my laptop and then installed the
module to run a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 - all went well.
Now,
Hi all,
(In the event this info is useful to someone else)
Regarding Howard's probs with FC5 plug-ins, I forwarded him the URL for
Stanton Finley's site:
http://stanton-finley.net/
He has install guides for FC3-5 which have worked well for me.
Regards,
Patrick

well if you search the site then you will find a BIOS section with
downloads.
download the file that corresponds with your motherboard and it should
expand out to something that will create a bootable floppy.
boot your computer with this floppy and it will update your BIOS.

Hi all
Does anyone know if this is possible
I have an active directory server and a Lotus Domino Server both
accesable via ldap.
Can I set up a third ldap server to provide authentication for users not
only in itself but to "proxy" requests to the other two.
From my reading I think it can

I've just had to do a mobo swap on a box and now the brand new
Gigabyte/Via mobo flat out won't find the 2 40Gb WD drives.
I know that I have had incidents before where the BIOS was reluctant to
detect WD HDD, but eventually did after about a 30 sec delay, but in this
case it just refuses.

Hi all
In an earlier post I was having probs with getting subversion to work on a server as
there wasn't enough entropy. I can't use the rng-tools as it's a virtual server and
it does not have access to that hardware (it hangs actually if I try). Hence I have
compiled subversion now and I have
