[sussex_mug] Upgrading Mid 2010 Mac Mini

2012-08-16 Thread Al Aldridge
Hello guys, I'm upgrading my Mac Mini Mid 2010, just bought a HD SSD crucial 256GB. Can I upgrade my HD even if I have 2GB RAM on this model? As well I'm looking to boost my RAM from 2GB to 16GB in the next few weeks. Do you guys know if I will have any kind of problem because my Mac Mini is not

Hi Al The hard drive's independent of the RAM, so you won't have any problems there. Not sure if the MacMini mid-2010 supports 16GB RAM, I think 8's the max. Regards Sam MacAmbulance Providing affordable Apple PC services Sam Mullen 07747 778022 http://www.macambulance.co.uk

Hi Sam, Thanks for the quick reply. Just worry if the SSD can be affected because I only have 2GB. I know the 2011 the max is 16GB RAM but not sure 2010 can support that amount but as well I will be happy to just get 8GB RAM. Regards, Al On Thu, Aug 16, 2012 at 2:04 PM, Sam - MacAmbulance

The SSD drive will speed up the system so any usage of virtual memory (when the 2GB is fully used and the mac relies on virtual memory more than usual) will be much faster. 8GB will be more than enough, I doubt you'd notice the difference between 8 and 16GB. Regards Sam -- MacAmbulance Sam

[sussex_mug] Frozen iMac

My iMac has frozen. Someone else was using it ( as Guest User). It froze so When he told me I tried to get out of Guest User onto my main user account. No luck. I have pressed the On/Off button a few times and unplugged it. I then tried resetting PRAM by holding down PR and alt and Command on

I then tried resetting PRAM by holding down PR and alt and Command on boot-up. No luck. By that do you mean the the PRAM reset was successful, i.e. you got the apple bong noise two (or more) times before letting go of the keys but it didnt fix the issue, or no luck as in it booted up again in

Hi Phil Try booting holding cmd + S into single user mode then type the following commands (pushing return after each command) : fsck -fy mount -uw / rm /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist reboot See if that works. If not then try booting holding down Shift until you see the spinning

Yes - it was successful - I got the bongs twice but it simply returned to the Users icons page and they won't function using a mouse or the return key. Will try Sam's suggestion next... Thanks! Sent from my iPad On 16 Aug 2012, at 18:30, Toby Leighton tobio2...@gmail.com wrote: I then tried

Many thanks Sam. I tried your first suggestion and typed in the commands. Perhaps I didn't wait long enough for the computer to respond to each command and scrambled up the sequence? Because it didn't seem to be working I tried your final suggestion - booting with Shift. This did as you said

Hi Phil You need to wait until the fsck -fy command reports that the drive appears to be ok, then you can type the other commands in in sequence. fsck usually takes 2-5 minutes. Have you tried a different keyboard mouse? Regards Sam MacAmbulance Providing affordable Apple PC services Sam

Sam - bodhisattva of macness (as you probably know - an enlightened being who choses to stay behind to help the benighted) It's working now and rather shamefully I'm not entirely sure how it became fixed. I accessed my own screen and somehow managed to get the mouse to make commands function.
