switch mode power supplies with 12 volt and 5 volt outputs are about as common
as anything gets basically any 3.5" disk enclosure has one in it...

upgraded to from the shipping to the latest bios (1.33c on the 5501) since then
I've been using the udma mode 4 x133 16GB cards probably since 2008)...

Very nice indeed, unfortunately 2.5" hdd don't go further than 1TB as
far as I know (and I need 2TB) and are much more expensive. I know the
issues with heat complicate matters a bit, but if the hdd can be powered
by the board, I'll find a solution for that somehow.
