Joe, Thanks. I would be interested in seeing that. I'm not surprised at that, given the configuration. Would a sprinkler 3 ft above the cabinet be more effective than one 7.5"? (I visited the site and measured the arrangement. The sprinkler is 7.5" above the cabinet and the deflector is 8" be

Couple more questions. Would this fire have gone to flashover, i.e., was it contained to the counter area for ten minutes? Was it large enough or smokey enough to have been a life-safety threat to an impaired (inebriated or sleeping) occupant? I'm obviously wondering if this is a life safety issue

No AHJ was involved. This was a test Tyco ran for us to see how much wetting of the face of the cabinet occurred and if a fire below the cabinet could be extinguished. We had a specific reason and job for the test. It's not much different to why we require pendents below soffits wider than 8". If I

On Bill's coat tails. I'm going to presume, so call me on it if need be, that you didn't do this test with pure research in mind so that there was a specific practical and immediate reason behind it. When that's the case there usually is a desired outcome involved, Did your results prove or disprov

Not intending to dispute your conclusion, but isn't prevention of flashover the objective of a 13D system, especially in areas where residents are sleeping (bedroom, living room)? By this definition your test may have been a success. Can you comment? Was an AHJ involved in the testing? Bill Br

Todd, A few years back we had Tyco run a mock up of exactly what you are describing for a 13R system and it failed the test. It was not able to extinguish a fire on the counter top. I have the video on VHS. You can contact me off forum if you want some more info. I know your job is 13D but

Also be aware.., a lot of Dry Pendants have differing K factors the longer they get. So technically, you would be replacing sprinklers with a different K factor, thereby requiring the calc as well. R/ Matt Matthew J. Willis Living Water Fire Protection, LLC. 1160 McKenzie Rd. PO Box 877 Cantonme

I read through the commentary in the handbook for the 2007 edition of 13D regarding the obstruction created by cabinets. That said the concern was items being stored on top of the cabinets obstructing discharge - a legitimate concern. If the top of the cabinet was not flat and had a slope so th

The job spec calls for replacing the existing 3" sch 10 black with 3" sch 40 galvanized. As I said in a previous post, to do this job correctly and bring the system up to Code will require more than just replacing pipe. The mains are essentially flat and the the outlets are off the side of the
