Water Heater Closets:
What if the water heater is on the bottom and SEALED off from the HVAC
closet on top via gaskets on the door? If a fire broke out in the WH
part, heat would not escape until the shelf or gaskets burned
Anyone here work regularly in Wisconsin?
I'm needing to know what the licensing limitations are (if they exist)
concerning who can install underground fire mains and appurtenances versus
aboveground sprinkler systems. Can a sprinkler contractor install underground
or does that require a
Licensed sprinkler contractor of fitter can install UG fire main in WI.
Most times we sub out the digging to a plumbing contractor and have a licensed
fitter
on site to install the pipe.

Our GC's sub'ed it out. We started at the flange inside. Common on the
western side.

You will need to check with the licensing division of the Wisconsin
Department of Commerce as to the license requirements. Their website has
all sorts of contact info. If you need help let me know and I can point you
to the correct person. Then you will also need to check with the specific

I had to upgrade my home laptop PC [64-bit] OS from Home Premium to Pro

Sorry for the delay Brian - yes, 8.17.5.1.3 is referring to small hose
connections only. But Cliff's comment isn't entirely accurate in that the
building code allows for certain conditions where 2 1/2 fire hose valves can

Hello Brian,
8.17.5.1 Small (1 1/2) (38 mm) Hose Connections. See Section C.5.
8.17.5.1.3 is a subset of 8.17.5.1 so I would take it as small hose 1 1/2
Just my opinion
For 2 1/2 Hose I go to NFPA 14 standpipes.

Steve,
How are you? Missed you at the convention this year.
I know you are the standpipe guru so I'm only asking to learn something
here. Even when 2½ valves are part of a sprinkler system and not
considered to be a standpipe system, aren't the values (flows, sizing, etc)
still based on 14?
Not necessarily, as the code contains prescriptive language regarding basis of
design. See 905.3.3 of the new building code for covered mall buildings for
example. Yes, the code says to provide a standpipe system per 905.3 but if
a building is outside of the scope of 905.3.1, but still

Now that I need to find it, I cannot remember where I saw it. What code
reference says that a building that is sprinklered in accordance with the

Try 2006 IBC 903.3.1.1.1.
