Lets not forget that once in a blue moon, sexy is added to the Handbook that is just wrong!! I don’t remember the details but I’ve sent emails to the liaison only three times for things to be corrected or pulled. For a book that big over the course of 20 years is a excellent batting average

Isn’t it strange indeed but you left out a few pieces of information that would better define the issue. I might as well pick up some of the there related topics that came up in this thread as well. First off, this is not a CMDA sprinkler issue. When it is cartoned, the class of plastic is ir

Thanks Craig I normally use FM data sheets as back up information or design criteria if there is nothing in the NFPA standards, I just found it strange that there was information for exposed but not for cartoned. Thank you James Crawford Phaser Fire Protection Ltd. Phone 604

I would go one step further than Craig. If you are in the new installation side of the industry, and warehouses are a part of your trade, staying current with FM Data Sheet 8-9 is important. New material in the correlating sections of NFPA 13 showed up in 8-9 four or six years earlier. Not quite

When the NFPA Standards do not specifically address a particular situation, it is common to reach out to other recognized industry standards for guidance. FM Data Sheets often provide that info or you may find other Standards or Industry Practices/Guidelines that address a unique condition that

There does not seem to be a protection scheme for cartoned expanded Group "A" plastics for buildings above 32'-0" ceiling heights, but there is now one for exposed expanded Group "A" plastics for building up to 40'-0" ceiling heights (NFPA #13 2016 ed). Have I missed something or do you used ex

This is one of those that a few AHJs I have run across put a slightly different spin. Sometimes, the fixed portion is >48” in width when they are fully collapsed as far as they go. In those cases, the AHJs have requested/required that we put a line of sprinklers under the bleachers to protect

NFPA 13 (2010) section 8.5.5.3.2: "Sprinklers shall not be required under obstructions that are not fixed in place such as conference tables". Since the obstruction, moveable bleachers, is not fixed in place, sprinklers SHALL not be required. Seems pretty clear to me. Todd G

Nick, I think you are disagreeing with the "AHJ" who provided the "Ask the AHJ" response in the Handbook? I am not sure what the answer is, but if I had movable bleachers that reached say 20 -30 feet out, providing one sprinkler at the "fixed" location not only would be unlikely to throw that

I disagree with your conclusion. I agree that if the bleachers are fixed in place there needs to be protection underneath. However, where the bleachers are moveable, protection underneath is not practical. If one could somehow orient the sprinkler under the fixed portion so that the spray would
