I suppose it's just since we apply the codes and standards as adopted so most
AHJs don't know and don't care if we can model something or draw other
conclusions than what they're reading in black and white, day in and day out.

Curious on the addition of balconies. It has been that way (without balconies)
in 13R for 20 years...what caused the change now?

Yup.
Just that my priorities have changed and I don't do as much sprinkler work on
weekends now. Got slapped upside the head with a new timetable. Knock yourself
out, however- don't let life pass you by in the meantime.

smoke control systems can be tested 'full scale' and not be destructive doing
so. How do you do that? If you are not testing with hot or at least a very
buoyant 'smoke' plume you probably aren't really testing it.

Sad news George. You know the Forum is here for you. I enjoy when you
philosophize and reminisce, too.

I knew I was asking for trouble, even with the semi-quotes 'full scale'. The
key is more satisfying. If I say 20 heads at .2/X sq ft will control a Y
size fire..., just flowing 20 heads to verify the calcs, even with-out a
fire might be destructive. But if I say it will take (4) 40,000 CFM fans to
Chris, in Eastern CT, we had 2 fires (in the same city) where unprotected
porches added significantly to the extent of fire damage. That was one of the
deciding factors here.

I wasn't challenging your statement to get you in trouble. I was hoping you
had been involved with something and would learnned me.

As If, Mr. Cahill!
One quick thing though and then I'll leave this thread alone:
Numero uno thing for testing-- VERIFY PROPER FAN ROTATION DIRECTION, (like a
fire pump. It might seem impossible to get something so important backwards,
but sometimes the fans are
10-12 years back, apt complex called the Rosecliff 1/2 mile south down
Willard Street from NFPA. BBQ on 2nd level (called a Balcony in the news),
up the exterior and into the unsprinklered attic (13R). Nobody died
thankfully.
I've had Owners argue that the plan says 'deck', so why do I need to
all copies. Thank you.
