Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.
David ... that's where piCorePlayer really shines. You can use a 1/8" jack to RCA audio cable to get from the RPi to the Touch's RCA inputs. That gets you going (you're initial cost is I'd think less than a Win10 system with RPi & case). Later if you want you buy an add-on audio hardware card (like my HiFiBerry) for digital or optical outputs. It is certainly not required (that was the setup I used for my 2nd RPi in my bedroom using a set of computer speakers) If you've a desktop already you may need an SD card adapter (to burn pCP to a microSD card that goes into the RPi) if one isn't supplied with the desktop computer. If you've a laptop it may have the SD card reader already. piCorePlayer rides atop the underlying OS so you don't need to futz with it. You'll have to create the NAS share that LMS will use, then configure it in the LMS settings in pCP. If you add additional audio hardware later you have to configure SqueezeLite for it, but pCP makes that easy with builtin config options for many such add-ons (I selected my HiFiBerry DAC from that dropdown in pCP, restarted, and it worked). Thank you for the replies. I do agree that the RPi is a very tempting solution. The only reason that I am not really considering the RPi route at the moment is that I changed jobs two years ago, and unfortunately at the moment I am exceedingly time poor with the new job, study and family. I will have a look today at the RPi options as it is a quiet sort of day for me, I was hoping for something quite turnkey and with a technology that I was already familiar with. If for whatever reason you don't want the RPi solution, your Windows-based proposal will also work. As said above, you can still use your NAS for storage. Plenty of Windows mini-PCs on Amazon. Get one pre-installed with Win 10 Pro so you can access it via Remote Desktop. (Win 10 Home does not support remote access unless you run a third-party app like VNC,) Apesbrain's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=738 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116263 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.
Came here to say this. I've been a RPi/piCorePlayer user for years. The RPi connects directly to my ZyXel NAS for music files and the HiFiBerry DAC optical out to my stereo receiver (they sit side by side next to my living room stereo & also next to my DSL router). PiCorePlayer is excellent & set up for both SqueezeLite (software SqueezeBox emulater) & LMS. I've a 2nd RPi in my bedroom connected via WiFi. [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.
I have been a Squeezebox touch user for well over a decade, and find myself completely thwarted by my problems with the LMS on my Synology DS418j. So, I either sell my Touch and start from scratch again with something like a PecanPi, or I find another solution for LMS. So, this is my latest iteration in a possible solution. I shall give you a brief topology. My home has a full cat6 network that runs to a central cabinet downstairs. I have my Touch connected to my stereo, and it is connected via a cat 6 cable. Solution: 1) Buy a cheap refurbished Dell OptiFlex 9020 i7 small form factor for under $200 with Windows 10 already installed. 2) Throw in two 1 TB HDD (I believe SSD are not necessary for this purpose) probably around $150 3) Install LMS and copy my music library from my NAS to the Dell. 4) put it in the server cabinet. 5) Live happily ever after. Does this sound like a viable, long term solution, or is there a simpler turnkey solution that will ensure longevity, or am I fighting a loosing battle? Thank you in advance for your help on this. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Help with LMS on NAS and PiCorePlayer
I used a larger SD card to a 16GB and set up the RPi from scratch, resizing the FS to use the entire card. Did everything (I think) and now getting a "System call failed: Operation not supported. Network mount failed from server at xxx.xxx.x.xxx." Here's the Network Mount screen. Let me know if you think of anything else. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Help with LMS on NAS and PiCorePlayer
What Synology version are you running? At this point, the easiest solution is probably to install LMS on the RPI. And then network mount to the Synology using a CIFS share. On the Synology: 1) In File Services, enable SMB. I think everything can stay default 2) In Shared Folder, find the Share that has your music on it. Edit it, and goto permissions. Make sure your user account has read/write access (Write is only needed for saving playlists) 3) You need to know the IP address of the NAS, and then the name of the share as seen in the Shared Folder listing. Then on pCP Web interface. 1) Dont install LMS yet. 2) Scroll down, and Install Additional Filesystem Support 3) Then in the Network Disk Mount, Enter fields a) mount point, some simple generic name to mount the music...i.e. Music b) IP address of your NAS c) Share name from your NAS Shared folder listing. d) Share type CIFS e) Username/Password, This is from your synology device of a user that has permission to the Shared Volume on the NAS. f) In options, put this. vers=3.0,uid=1001,gid=50 g) Increase the Max Wait time to 300 or so (This needs to be long enough for your NAS to startup from a power outage) h) Save it. Once the network is mountedthen you can go ahead and install LMS. Make sure you have expanded your file system plently large enough. a 750gb music partition could easily use 5-10gb of space while optimizing the database. piCorePlayer a small player for the Raspberry Pi in RAM. [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Help with LMS on NAS and PiCorePlayer
Yesterday I made the horrible mistake of updating PERL on my Synology NAS 218+ which broke my Squeezebox (actually PicorePlayer on a Raspberry Pi 2). I have about a 750 GB of music files on the NAS. The RPi is connected to my stereo receiver. (The RPi is equipped with a small LCD screen, so that I can display RU meters while music is playing.) Anyway I spent all day yesterday trying to point my PicorePlayer to the NAS, but I get different errors, depending on the settings. Sometimes when PicorePlayer is booting up, I get cannot mount . . . read-only errors, sometimes I get you might need a sbin/mount type helper program. Before I start this process again, Im hoping to get some clarification on what Im actually trying to do. For simplicity of terms, when I refer to the RPi, Im really talking about PicorePlayer on the RPi. Also, if this matters, my NAS is connected to our internet directly via ethernet. My RPi connects to the NAS via WiFi. Also, I have consulted this web site numerous times. https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/add_network_share/ - Apparently I can still install LMS on the NAS if I use something called Docker. But then I would still have to figure out how to stream music to the RPi, which is connected to my stereo. (Possibly this is how it was working before I messed everything up.) Should I install LMS on the NAS -and- on the RPi? Or just on the NAS? - Another question that comes up is do I need PERL on the NAS at all? Its currently not installed, as I was trying to downgrade to older version of PERL so I could get things back the way they were. This was unsuccessful because the older version of PERL would not install on the NAS due to compatibility with DSM. - Or do you recommend installing LMS on the RPi and just continue trying to figure out how to point it to the music files on my NAS? If LMS on the RPi is my goal, then I have some questions about Mount Point settings in the LMS web interface. Go with NFS or CIFS? And what the hell do I put for Share Name and User? Ive read a lot of things about this and Im still not sure what to use for these settings. I can provide screenshots of anything if it helps. Thank you guys in advance. ghulse's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13636 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116261 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
