If for whatever reason you don't want the RPi solution, your Windows-based proposal will also work. As said above, you can still use your NAS for storage.
Plenty of Windows mini-PCs on Amazon. Get one pre-installed with Win 10 Pro so you can access it via Remote Desktop.
