Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Orbi Mesh and Inability to Connect
Well, I have 6 SB radios and one boom box running fine for a long time. No hiccups at all. The slim device hooked to the stereo is struggling. Will connect to the wireless network fine. Then connects to LMS fine. Then it acts like it will be fine and will scroll through menus and submenus, but when I ask it to actually play something the little wheel spins (I didn't know it had a wheel) for a long time and will eventually do what I ask but then drops frequently, rebuffers constantly, and may lose the network eventually. There is something different about the slim device. I haven't treated it any differently than the rest. The Orbi router assigns a IP address not in conflict with anything to it. But there is something going on unique to the slim device. Wouldn't want this to be too easy... I posted enough of the solution to get people reading and looking at this thread for all the details. The Orbi router has a setting that simply allows you to uncheck a box to "disable ax features" on 2.4 and/or 5.0 bands. I just did it on 2.4. The ax features is part of the new protocol that I believe is part of "wireless 6." So it is running on older protocols I assume, ac or n or ? that doesn't cause the SB's to seize up. I don't notice a difference in speed. Good luck. I'm sure this particular setting is specific to Orbi but others may have something like it. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Orbi Mesh and Inability to Connect
Since your Ethernet connected SB radio works, I think you confirmed you have a wifi6 or mesh network problem. I do not have the expertise as others here, but here are my observations or suggestions. This is based upon the assumption you still need a wifi6 or mesh network. Removing the orbi would solve the problem. 1 Return the Orbi and try another manufacturer. Maybe other implementation does. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Orbi Mesh and Inability to Connect
This is very unlikely, but if your devices that require WPS could all use the 5 GHz band, my suggestion would be to disable 2.4 GHz wifi on the Orbi system. Then you would continue to use the T-Mobile modem/router 2.4 Ghz wifi for your Squeeze devices. You are probably right that switching the Orbi to Access Point mode will not solve any problems relating to Wifi 6. I see that other people report success after turning off Fast Switching and Fast Scanning on Wifi 6 systems. I've been through the manual for your system, and I do not see any way to disable these options. But I have no experience with mesh. I hope someone who knows more can explain how this could be done for your system, if it is possible. Whatever approach you take, you probably need to switch the Orbi to Access Point mode. Having two DHCP servers running will continue to cause problems. If you'll be patient with me, I'm going to attempt a grossly oversimplified explanation of your networking gear: What we call a "router" for use in home networking is actually a combination of devices. It usually includes at least the following: 1. a switch, which makes it possible for multiple wired devices to connect 2. an access point, which makes it possible for multiple wireless devices to connect 3. the actual router, which includes a DHCP server and serves as a sort of traffic cop, deciding what data packets can go where as they travel to and from the various connected devices. If you have multiple DHCP servers running, it's rather like having two traffic cops at either end of a block, giving conflicting directions. Collisions are likely. When you switch a "router" to AP mode, you are simply turning of the DHCP server. After that, it does no routing, but the wireless access point and the switch continue to work. As long as there is an upstream DHCP server (the T-Mobile modem/router, to which the Orbi is connected) traffic should be routed correctly to the devices connected to the AP. (I think AP mode would probably also correct any problems with conflicting firewalls.) Yes, it may well be that you will have to reconfigure all your networks after switching the Orbi to AP mode. Only you can decide if the hassle is worth dealing with in order to make things work. (And of course, as always, I can't guarantee that any of my suggestions will work!) My final suggestion; do not do ANYTHING purely on the basis of my recommendations! Wait for other, more knowledgeable people to chime in and see if there's any sort of consensus. Ok. I have read everything above and followed all the links. I apologise for speaking in simplistic terms but here are current questions. One of the links took me to a 15 page thread that got into a lot of very technical stuff re versions, updates, bugs, reprogramming radios through direct logins, etc. I dont have time or skills for that so have to hope that something less technical can fix my problem. So far, from the discussion, it seems having double DHCP, firewall, etc is the suspected culprit according to some contributors. Others seem to imply that the wireless 6 technology is the culprit and if I turn off all wireless from the tmobile router modem, the double DHCP issue may not be a true problem. Each device has its own basic (I know this is the wrong term) address that I use to get to their web interface and they are different, so having that IP address be the same in both devices is not an issue. Some strongly advise AP mode which would fix the double issue. My question re AP mode is whether it fixes the possible wireless 6 issue? Going to AP mode is labor intensive in terms of what appears to be creating a new network and reconnecting everything. I have a suspicion that the wireless 6 issue is the culprit and perhaps does require very technical patches etc as in the long thread mentioned above. If I am right, then hardwiring seems the easier solution. People dont like power adapters but theoretically it supplies a hardwire fix. The one SB radio I have plugged in on ethernet to the Orbi is still going strong. I am going to experiment with it using an old power hardwire adapter I use for a weather station. This has been working fine for years. (This could be a Saturday night live routine pretty soon.) Many suggest the LMS needs to be hardwired. But my LMS is on a computer that is on the wireless Orbi mesh system and it is speaking to the hardwired SB radio just fine. I plan to try to hardwire the LMS computer to the Orbi and then experiment with an SB radio on the orbi wireless to see if that combination makes a difference. So, my current questions are: is it worth trying AP mode if you believe wireless 6 is the issue? Are there other types of adapters for each SB radio other than powerline adapters that will convert or transform the wireless 6 signal into the older version of n protocol wireless signal? I saw some links to wireless extenders that plugged into power, then appeared to have a hard wire ethernet cable into a device. I am wondering if these might tame the wireless 6 issue. I have no idea what they are doing in a super technical way in converting the wireless signal into something going through a cable. Sorry not to be an IT pro, but probably there are other civilians who can perhaps follow some of this and figure out fixes for the non-technical SB system fans. Thank you in advance. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] How random is random?
My last post was over-optimistic. The Library Views scheme is certainly a successful way to cue up an alternative set of tracks. But, despite what I thought at first, the degree of randomness of those tracks delivered by Random Mix remains poor. I suppose it was naive to expect it could be any different. >From my experience, Random Mix is a misnomer and cant deliver much beyond the same artists and tracks over and over again. But it would be great if someone could point out that Im still missing some hidden LMS trick that can deliver proper randomness. whitman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9053 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114355 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
